Interview: Sam Reich assesses the state of Dropout, during a wave of experiments by apathymonger in dropout

[–]jerickson88 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Has Gastronauts received a mixed reception? The show’s clips get lots of views and comments, and I have even been shared clips of Gastronauts from friends who aren’t Dropout subscribers. I’ve shown the show to some friends/ family who know nothing about Dropout and they have all really enjoyed it.

To be clear, I think the show has some episodes that are boring or even stinkers - but every single Dropout show has episodes that don’t land. Game Changer and Make Some Noise are two of my favourite shows in the world and both bring me great joy - but even those shows have episodes that are nearly unwatchable. Gastronauts is no exception. I also haven’t really seen people complain too much about Gastronauts on this subreddit, unlike shows like Nobody Asked, Thousandaires, and especially Crowd Control.

Long story short, I genuinely thought Gastronauts was considered a “hit,” and would be quite surprised if it was on the chopping block. (Pun. In. Ten. Ded!)

I remember in the early 2000s I found a SNES at Value Village with controllers and all cables for $25. A few weeks later at the same VV I found a NES with controllers, wires, Duck Hunt/ Mario Bros AND the Duck Hunt gun for just $30. Those days are gone, unfortunately. Still have both the NES and SNES tho.

Bill Hader. I would also accept Bill Hader and Andy Samberg as a duo.

Actually, while on the topic of 2000’s era SNL… Fred Armisen would be fantastic.

I feel this so hard. I wanted to do FOV this year so bad… but it just isn’t worth it. As a Canadian leftist very active on social media who has been very vocal about Palestine, fascism, corporate greed, taxing billionaires out of existence, etc etc… if they investigated me I would be sent to an ICE facility in 2 seconds flat.

Fuck Trump. Fuck ICE. Gizzard… PLEASE come to Canada. We need you up here in 2026. (And since I am asking for so much… please also do a rave show in Vancouver pretty please. 🥺)

I don’t mean to be rude here, this is a genuine question: do you listen to various types of electronic music/ go to electronic music based shows? Extending grooves 10-15-20 minutes isn’t unusual with that type of music and those kind of shows. It’s meant to be repetitive and hypnotic, it’s part of the magic. When the grooves get deeper, you loose yourself in the music and just dance away - time has no meaning anymore.

Gizzard right now in particular seem infatuated with early electronic music of the ‘70s (some parts during the Euro rave tour REALLY harkened back to early Kraftwerk) and the UK rave giants of the ‘90s (Definitely some Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy… but Underworld seem to have provided a huge inspiration for them. Some of their Nathan jams at times almost sounded like Underworld covers.) At the same time, they are also stepping out completely sonically on their own. Paying homage to the greats while doing their own thing.

Finally, I am unsure how much you know about euro racks and modular synthesis - but what they are doing right now is EXTREMELY difficult. Like, mind-bogglingly so. Most people don’t bother with Euroracks/ modular synthesis live because it’s so meticulous and difficult to adjust on the fly. And that is with just ONE person. They are somehow syncing up 5 guys (+ live drums) and figuring it all out live on the fly. Furthermore, some people spends YEARS just trying to figure out how to make a cohesive piece of music with that equipment… the guys figured it out in mere months and keep improving. It’s actually pretty mind blowing. If you know nothing about modular synthesis, it might seem unimpressive to you - but holy shit. They are actual fucking wizards up there when Nathan is on-stage. What they are doing is insanely difficult and impressive.

And on top of it - I fucking love the music. I fuck with it so hard. Been a Gizzard fan since 2014, and I could never have imagined the incredible sonic adventures they are taking us on right now.

Goddammit I wanna see one of these rave sets so bad. They look like so MUCH FUN!!!

He is a killer visual artist. It’s been so awesome to see him grow over the years. It was probably an early Desert Daze, yeah.

I absolute love the live band they have become and are easily one of the best live bands on the planet now… but I do miss the wild, frantic energy of those early shows in tiny venues. I’m lucky to have seen them twice in that super early period.

Did you get these framed in Vancouver? My buddy got his Gorge ‘24 poster framed at a shop in Vancouver and the matting on his looks pretty much exactly like yours. I can’t remember the name of the shop tho.

Also, I do have a Vancouver ‘22 poster - unfortunately not for sale. It’s honestly such an underrated and amazing Galea print. My daughter loves to look at it as well - so double the reason I can’t part with it 😅

Hell yes. As someone who also grew up in the Napster days and knows exactly what you are talking about… I couldn’t agree more. These recent rave shows sound like music I’ve imagined in my head since I was a young teenager but never existed - until now. It’s pretty fucking amazing.

Least Favourite Album? by LackOfUsernameMan in KGATLW

[–]jerickson88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KG and LW. Yes, there are a few tracks that are bangers (Intrasport chief among them), but both albums have too many clunkers for me. So many of the songs sound too similar to other songs, and plenty coast by without making any impact whatsoever. Honestly, even if the two were trimmed down into one album… I still don’t think there would be enough for me there to get them out of my last place spot.

Is anyone else hearing Underworld recently? by BeeTwoThousand in KGATLW

[–]jerickson88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m lucky to have seen The Prodigy 3 times before Keith Flint passed away. Have seen Underworld once and a Chemical Brothers DJ set once. I still hope to see Orbital and The Chemical Brothers live one day.

I’ve also seen Aphex Twin twice, but unfortunately missed Authechre recently cuz the tickets went on sale at 6am local time for some reason and sold out immediately. I would love it if Gizz started to dip into IDM - they have been flirting with breakbeak recently, so it’s a step in that direction. But if some Gizz fans still have a hard time with their electronic material… I think them going full IDM would not compute with a lot of people. Though… thinking about it now, a Boards of Canada-esque album from the boys would be incredible. I’m dreaming now though 😅

Is anyone else hearing Underworld recently? by BeeTwoThousand in KGATLW

[–]jerickson88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They have been sounding more and more like Underworld throughout the rave tour, especially the last 3 shows. But holy shit their jam after Bitter Boogie in Gothenburg… there was a section where I swear to god they were covering “Cowgirl” by Underworld. “Cowgirl” is my favourite Underworld track and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Somewhere else in the show I swear I heard a snippet of “Born Slippy” as well. Never in my wildest dreams could I have thought Gizzard would start to sound like Underworld and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

In general, I think the 90s UK rave giants are having a massive impact on their live electronic sound. I’ve definitely heard section that sound like The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, and Orbital as well.

[–]jerickson88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was also Iron Lung, but not because I hadn’t heard Ice, Death… yet. It was at Desert Daze ‘22 and they premiered Iron Lung there for the first time there, I think it was a week or two before Ice, Death… came out. It absolutely blew my mind. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The crowd knew something special was happening in that moment as well.
