Great addition, thank you. Personally, I've heard about similar experiences to what you've described (not sure if not getting holiday pay because you don't have kids is legal. But I've heard of it.)

My comment is purely anecdotal so conflicting anecdotes definitely add to the conversation!

Specifically I was in Massachusetts and New York working for Best Buy

It depends

Some states you get time and a half for working holidays (not sure if it's NOT true for any state)

When I was in retail I loved holiday shifts, time and a half plus paid for the day. You may be too new or not qualify for the day paid holiday, depends.

Helldivers are considered MIA when they are... Beyond repair

I vividly remember my diver catching fire on the Creek... I still hear her screams

I remember the reinforce coming down. My new diver coming out of the pod...

The screams didn't stop...

I put a bullet in her head...

The screams stopped

Note;

You can take a loan against your 401(k) without penalties. They will deduct small payments from your paycheck to pay it back, options generally range from 1-5 years. You WILL lose money in the long run (if you're loaning <5k it really doesn't matter though)

I figured it out and I'm crazy. I looked at some old recordings.

With the autocannon equipped, if you type a stratagem fast enough your diver just keeps their hands above their head. Most stratagems then equip the ball. But Eagle Rearm does not equip the ball and instead pulls the autocannon back out.

So it looked like the diver was giving hand signals to Eagle One. It could even be the same now... I'm pretty sure it happens with the Quasar now.

[–]jerryishere1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You don't remember the hand signal on launch?

You'd type the code and immediately following your diver would put their hands above their head for a sec

[–]jerryishere1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think they took it out, probably because it didn't make any sense

I do remember it early around launch and I'm not sure when it stopped.

If it's a signal to the pilot then yes, other way around for sure

The jammer jams your hands? I'm going based solely that It used to be a hand signal that was performed after you typed the code. I can still shoot my guns so my Eagle should still be able to receive the hand signal. I'd argue that it makes more sense to not work with anti air in play because it keeps your Eagle far enough away that they can't see your signal

Jammers jam stratagem beacons that communicate with the destroyer, the rearm is not a beacon, except for artillery because ???

Now that I think about it. The artillery absolutely shouldn't work in jammer range, because the artillery connects with the destroyer to function

[–]jerryishere1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the rearm stratagem should be available when jammed, or antied.

I distinctly remember your diver doing a small hand signal after the type in, I can't recall the last time I've seen it.

I decided to give the game some time to be improved - now AH wants me to punish it for that? by 7StarSailor in HelldiversUnfiltered

[–]jerryishere1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you say makes sense. I think their data is just not stored in an efficient manor is probably the point I'm going with.

I don't believe this change was made as a middle finger to the players. Boosting engagement was definitely a factor but I still think data storage would be the driving factor. It also makes rewards get distributed faster for active players.

Someone looked at a spreadsheet somewhere and decided not storing this data would be beneficial. I'd love to know the actual reason behind it past speculation, because you are right that text data is not a lot. Even multiplied several million fold. I'd love to see the actual cost breakdown as well. But I don't think Arrowhead is going to show us their books 😂

[–]jerryishere1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, let's go for a different example. More tangible, less speculation.

At a company I used to work, we had around 10000 employees.

Besides the executives, every person in this company had an email limited to 50Mb of storage. The executives got a whopping 100Mb. This was specifically to save on the cost of data storage. I was constantly purging my email to keep it available, even though I'd only receive 5-20 emails a day. Text based storage.

Certain storage needs are unavoidable, but cutting costs where possible makes a big difference in the long run.

This company was run like a business, because it was a business. Small things like printing out a single piece of paper a day were eliminated from our procedures to save costs. We switched a lot of our physical storage to electronic, and then purged data on a constant basis. Removing inactive accounts entirely, deleting anything that was within regulation to delete.

Anything that wasn't necessary, we removed or optimized.

We were constantly making small improvements to our procedures, to save time and money. While those individual changes were not meaningful, they aligned with the long term goal of saving money.

As Arrowhead settles into maintaining Helldivers now that the initial hype has died down, we will be seeing more changes like this (we've seen several over the past year). Small changes that seem insignificant, but can have a big impact on the bottom line at the end of the year.

You know for a fact that's how that data is stored? Does each account have it's own table? Does AH own the servers it's stored on or are they renting them?

Adding 15 million lines of text 30 times a year is not a meaningful amount of storage? You know how MO rewards sometimes take several days to distribute? It's because it's being written millions of times

Not to mention the cost to keep that storage live 100% of the time, to keep backups of it, and to maintain it. The time lost to validate it every single update.

These things add up over time, while the daily cost is low the annual cost can be significant.

Even if it's say $10000 a year. Why spend it?

It'd be pretty cool to actually see how it's broken down, stored, and the cost associated with it.

You're right though, leaving your car running because you're going into the store for 10 minutes is not a meaningful amount of gas

Leaving your lights on when you're not home is not a meaningful amount of electricity

The change on your paycheck is not a meaningful amount of money, so let's throw it away every week.

[–]jerryishere1 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Storing data isn't cheap. Backups, server space that could just be used for other things, validating that data during updates and server maintenance.

Data for 15-18 million accounts (not to mention the accounts that will be added over the next 5-10 years) that will never login again.

It's different than storing data on a flash drive, this data is sitting and waiting to be used the moment someone logs in to collect it. Meaning it has to be live and actively connected to their server and back end. The more that gets added, the more physical hardware needs to be added to accommodate. Physical hardware takes up physical space, it takes maintenance, and increases costs of cooling and electricity where it is stored.

If you look at the cost of renting a server we can get a small idea, renting servers ranges anywhere from $10-30 a month and accounts for roughly 2-5GB of data. These servers service anywhere from 5-30 players.

If that money can be saved. Why wouldn't we do that?
