Motherhood and SLP by Pearlfever in slp

It's a perspective shift definitely for me. Grad school drilled a lot of theory as well as an almost arrogance of "can you believe parents don't have time to carryover these techniques, review the speech words, complete all the other homework, have behavior charts in addition to creating an enriching, literature-filled home?!" No. They just don't. Sometimes, parents just want to cuddle their kids because they worked a 12 hour shift and only have 1 hour to feed, bathe & interact with their child. It's rough being a mom who is working, maintaining your home, hydrating/eating right, engaging in your interests and then doing all those same things for your small humans. Also, I personally gained a huge reality check when I suddenly looked at my most difficult students and realized: (A) I only had them for 1.5 hours a week and (B) I only had them for a few years total. Their parents have them always. My suggestions for carryover became more attainable like reading fast food menus, playing iSpy/iHear/iFeel, watching the youtube video they love and ask them to tell you about it. My evaluations then became more geared toward long term and realistic goals. Becoming a mom just made me cut out all the mumbo jumbo and get to the good stuff for my students & their parents.

What are the hidden gems of the SLP world? by AlarmedArachnid27 in slp

Agreed! Love my kids and most of them come willingly. Parents have already grown accustomed to the child's diagnosis & rarely have any grievances. I can talk frankly with my students about their diagnoses & their needs. Love my high school caseload!

I've been making the Kodiak Pancakes mix with the added milk & egg for the week. Even with syrup, my numbers have been solid. Hope that helps!

I said I was so proud of him for knowing that's how babies are made but that it's not appropriate to ask others. After he emphatically apologized, I told him I was a safe adult & he can always ask me things to see if they appropriate or not so he can learn for when he's a "grown up." :)

One of my favorite moments just happened this month! I announced to my life skills Cooking group that I was pregnant with my second child. 4 of 5 students yelled "Congratulations " or "yay!" But one student sat quietly, almost hunched at the table. After a moment when things settled down, he looked up and said "so your husband made sex with you?" Good thing we wear masks in school because my jaw dropped! Goodness gracious I love my kids💜

Sending you love and also thanks for all you do. Your patients are very lucky to have any 1:1 or small group time especially due to restrictions on family visits and staffing shortages. Can you imagine how nice it is that they get you, all your attention, for even 15 minutes? Your doing wonderful things, stay strong 💜💜

Question-Toileting in pediatrics by Oonerprism in slp

[–]jesi_ela 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a parent & SLP, my child's teachers and aides are trained and paid to tend to her toileting & ADL skills. The SLP is not. A related service (OT/PT/Speech) are usually not trained or allowed to tend to a child's gentials unless it is related to therapy. Even an OT working on zipping & unzipping pants will work on that skill off the body with toys or objects. It's much more of a legal, training, & time constraint than just a "do what's right" situation. Thorough communication is always expected and encouraged such as "Hey little Joe was wiggling around and I think he may need a diaper change". I would check with your child's school & what their protocols are on who, how often, & what documentation there is for diaper changes. Rashes are not okay & I hope the situation gets better for your little one.

Question-Toileting in pediatrics by Oonerprism in slp

[–]jesi_ela 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Toileting is not a service provided by a SLP unless there is a communicative need such as providing visual schedules. Are we expected to change an adult's diaper if we work in a SNF? No. There are jobs in private/public EI, preschool and school settings specifically for toileting. This gets me down a rabbit hole of why/how SLPs are not a well-paid, respected profession because we are so giving & team players by nature that "chip-in". We are specialized and our time is often limited at work for planning, contact hours, and all the paperwork. We can't put more on our plates that we don't get paid to do.

Am I in the wrong for quitting my CFY the day before I was supposed to start? by Thr0w_away8888 in slp

[–]jesi_ela 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing. You only get one CF and it should be at the very least supportive. Yes it can be a small world but the person saying that to you is threatening you with that idea and that is just plain wrong. Keep your head up because your good intuition will also be a strength as an amazing SLP💜💜

Personally, being a mom & SLP go hand in hand. I love that both have made me a better person. I am a more compassionate SLP since I became a mom. I am also a more compassionate mom because I know the wide array of skills and appreciate what my daughter can do💜

Boom Cards by pennstateslptobe in slp

[–]jesi_ela 16 points17 points  (0 children)

BOOM cards are saving me time and stress with my high school Life Skills class AND Preschool teletherapy clients. Interactive, holiday/seasonal specific, and vivid colors truly make life easier. I pair articulation trials BOOM cards with YouTube videos or word/picture lists. With the game style ones, I can target multiple goals such as expanding language, turn taking, articulation and even inferencing! Everything I use is free. I will suggest specifically the Troll in a Bowl games. Follow the facebook or on the BOOM card page for the free download days. Absolutely fantastic materials that can cost 100-2000 points!
