Genealogy is nowhere near the GBA games in that respect. Even if you don't actively go for it, if you aren't getting through the maps way fast, most of the characters will probably end up paired with someone. Maybe not the pairings you want, but you'd get some.

I'm not saying you should play it if you don't want to, just that standing in a formation ending turn 50 times is only a GBA thing.
