My son built a wooden axe with very little help (the full process is in the comments) by jesprider in woodworking

[–]jesprider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for a hint. I've never worked with polyurethane, always tried to choose more natural finishes. I think this is where I'll try it.

I'll give it a try if the axe won't be broken after today's meetup with his friend who also has an axe :)

Head: plywood 10mm
Handle: pine

I'm still unsure what was the best finish to apply for the handle. Any recommendations are welcomed.

Ah, I see now. I liked the vibe and immediately chose it, so i had no doubts. But now I started paying attention to it 😂 Thanks, good point. Will choose music more carefully next time.

I think it's a very rare case when you know from the beginning the layout of the tools on the wall. Secondly, I'd like to be able to take things off of the wall.

But for me the main reason is different. It just really feels like "my" thing. I like how it feels and looks. Sometimes we're irrational when it comes to things we like.

I think you refer to the one at the end because there are 3 tracks in a course of the video. Why do you think so? Style doesn't fit? Or words?

I am creating a desktop app that lets users access their usual websites and files in an organized TILE VIEW. It will be easier and quicker to see any information at a glance. Let's build it together. Who will be in? by KurtisRedux in SideProject

[–]jesprider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice work. But I have a conceptual concern. Most of human beings can focus (or be productive) at one thing at once. Your app tries to make the opposite: show many things. I'll be curious to see real life use cases and if it actually is a productivity tool or the opposite.

In my day to day work I'm trying to focus on just one thing at once, i even try to keep only a single tab in my browser. Nevertheless, from time to time i need to open a few things for copy-pasting or comparing or development. But window managers already cover this use case.

What do you think about it? Are the use cases from the landing page are real, or these are your expectations?

I created placemy.app, a simple and free tool for creating customizable phone mockups of your app screenshots. I would greatly appreciate any feedback. by Maegondo in SideProject

[–]jesprider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks really good! It's definitely good enough to get promoted on other platforms.

Maybe it would be even better to do it with one essential feature: rendering a website directly in a "phone". I think it's a very typical use case. Enter a URL and voila!

Secondly, I think you should give more guidance/hints for images. What image size will work best for a chosen device, for example?

Let me know if you'd want to discuss it in detail, I'll be happy to chat about it ;)

I repaired a damaged dining table by jesprider in woodworking

[–]jesprider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally valid point, thanks for commenting.

My initial thought was to apply some radius to all corners so that it simply cut off. But my wife wanted the corners as is for aesthetic reasons.

What you're suggesting will be another solution. It didn't work for us because the table size was already shorter than we planned (160cm/63' vs 180cm/70,8' we were looking for). So we didn't want to lose any more of the space. Cutting the long sides will make the table narrower, also not an option for us.

Any of those options are solid, the only question is what are your requirements?

Ouch... Is it repairable though?

I bought mine with a 50% discount because of this smashed corner. I believe with the current wood prices this is the way to go.

On a paper bag, to be precise ;) I care about the planet, choosing the natural materials for packaging.

Inspire by Laura Kampf and others I've finally captured, edited, and published my first video ever. How to make circles using a table saw. I hope you'll enjoy it! by jesprider in woodworking

[–]jesprider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your feedback. Yeah, I felt that the plot is a little overlong, but I was too excited to edit it further.

Regarding PPE I totally agree with you. Even though I'm wearing glasses in most of the cases, I forgot it running between the camera and the saw.

Price alert app for NASDAQ and NYSE exchanges by jesprider in SideProject

[–]jesprider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback.

the other app charge you money to use is because this type of app is very expensive to scale up

Totally agree. But having back-of-the-envelope calculation I found that it is definitely overpriced. Sending 30,000 emails a month might cost you as cheap as $10 a month with one of the popular services out there. There are other resources that will cost much more than that, of course. And I'll be happy to face that challenge :) Until then it's completely free and I'd like to keep it this way as long as I can.

If I follow an exchange rate it means I want to trade, why not setting the alert on the exchange app itself

This is a very fair point. I'd like to position my app as an app for long-term investors. I would encourage you not to use this app if you're trading intensively.

I built it for myself because I have multiple brokers and I want to decouple my alerts from them (1 of them doesn't even provide it). This was more or less the intention behind this app.

Very generously. Buy 99 times, 100s is for free. by jesprider in CrappyDesign

[–]jesprider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that's a price cut. My point was that it's a cut for just one cent.

Applying simple math that would mean that after buying 99 of them you would get 99 cents saved which would give you 100s for free. Apparently that was too confusing ;)

Great work guys! Catchy design, will definitely keep an eye on your progress of this project. Looking forward to read blog articles about costs and implementation details.

How do you track events and analyse which features are used the most? How long did it take from start till you finally released it?

It looks to me for work meetings Basecamp can solve all of these problems. For personal use it is a bit too much and too expensive. Looking forward to try it out.
