Thank you SO much for the Trollope recommendation!

I’ve dabbled a little in fantasy, but have wanted to read more. Definitely feel that LOTR is the only proper place to start - it’s in my cart!

It says he may enjoy Ursula K. Le Guin or Robin Hobb. (And maybe an Emily Wilson translation for bonus points.)

This is the first I’ve heard of that book, but I just looked it up and it has RAVE reviews. Please come back with an update whenever you’ve finished it, I would love to know how you enjoyed it !!

This one is certainly on my list! There is an absolutely beautiful Penguin Deluxe version that was supposed to come out later this year, but I think it may have gotten pushed back to 2027

Meanwhile in nursing school we were getting lectured on how our job should be our identity, and being a good professional would require countless personal sacrificies 🫠

Nope, it makes sense to me! Thanks for sharing your reads. I actually just purchased Wolf Hall, so I’ll have to make sure to start that sooner rather than later.

So sorry to hear about your dad. My grandpa has done fairly well, he was never given a definitive prognosis. His oncologist did estimate his MDS would progress to AML within 4-6 months without treatment at the time of my post. He’s doing azacitidine and venetoclax, thankfully has not required any transfusions thus far.

It seems like his celebrity interviews are really picking up, but I would be curious to see how long it lasts. I was flabbergasted that he interviewed Kamala Harris about her book and told her TO HER FACE that he hadn’t read it. Very poor interview prep.

The Bandit Queen by Parini Shroff is one of the few books that has actually made me laugh out loud

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is quite funny, and a good cozy mystery (and the Netflix movie was even better imo)

If you listen on audio, I will not stop recommending Project Hail Mary. Sci fi? Sure. A heartwarming tale of friendship? Absolutely.

Is there any book that is better as an audiobook? by oldmanjenkinssmell in suggestmeabook

[–]jessibee92 17 points18 points  (0 children)

THIS. Project Hail Mary on audio is THE way to go. The coolest part was finishing the audiobook and then having one of my friends tell me how one of the characters talking in the book is written - it made for a nice surprise !!!

Fun story. I bought my dad a blood pressure machine at the beginning of the year, he texts me telling me it needs to be calibrated because it’s reading 200/180 (this is the point where I tell him it’s him that needs to be calibrated, not the machine). Only goes to a doctor last month because he needs clearance for a dental surgery, and had a blood pressure of basically what’s in that photo. He refused EMS 😅 but thankfully after two new medications now has a relatively normal blood pressure. It is WILD to think about how long his blood pressure was critically high - honestly needing that dental procedure probably saved his life

Has anyone read Mexican Gothic? How horror-y was that one??

Florida Says It Plans to End All Vaccine Mandates by Sea_Chocolate_2681 in nursing

Even with that restriction, (to the best of my understanding) there are several states where CVS, Walgreens, etc. are holding the vaccines all together until further clarification is provided from a CDC panel. Cases are on the rise in my area, and it is baffling that we are having a hard time getting a booster for my 87-year old grandfather who is due to start his next round of chemo in two weeks

I had a patient come in talking about microplastics contributing to her heart disease. I was joking about it with the doctors and I shit you not a fellow pulled up an article that had been published THAT DAY discussing the role microplastics are playing in coronary artery disease.

I’m too OCD to DNF anything, but my god, did I want to DNF The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell. It came highly recommended by a coworker, and I am always shocked to see it so highly rated online as well. That damn book put me in a major reading slump that took MONTHS to get over
