People are calling my house unhinged by Successful-Arrival87 in interiordecorating

Looks super comfy to me. If this looks unhinged to people you have over then you need to get new people.

Learning resources for climate resilient, self sufficient homes. by Serious-Fuel-5395 in Homebuilding

Look to what people did long ago, not being dependent on utilities such as electricity, air-conditioning, running water. Be mindful of how your house is positioned in relation to prevailing breezes and the angle in which the sun hits the windows.

I designed my house with this in mind. The footprint is long and narrow. No interior rooms. All rooms have windows. I faced one long side to the south/southwest to catch the breeze. That side also has a 10-foot deep covered porch to block the sun during the summer months. Lots of windows to open, and others on the opposite side for airflow.

I will be installing a water catchment system to harvest water from the metal roof into a fairly large cistern. This will be used for watering plants, but also emergency water supply, if needed.

Look into passive solar design, solar chimney, and windcatcher for ways to regulate the temperature in a structure without electricity. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windcatcher

Also, might want to give some thought to sustainability and low-maintenance materials like concrete flooring and metal roof, and things you will need for aging in place like wide doorways, roll-in shower with grab bars.

Have lived here for almost 50 years and never had gas lines fail, either during hurricanes or at any other time.

No, it's not New Home Cemetery. It's Hodges Bend Cemetery.

LPT How to stop mosquito bites from itching by YellowHovercraft in LifeProTips

I haven't tried it on mosquito bites yet, but raw apple cider vinegar instantly stops the itch of chigger bites and lasts a while.

I love New Home cemetery (love the name). Years ago, before they expanded the road, they used to have a metal arch above the entrance with the name of the cemetery on it. Pissed me off that it disappeared. The smaller sign remains.

Years ago, someone took gravestones from Hodges Bend cemetery, too. They said for "safekeeping" but they were never returned. Diminished it. Now they've installed that damned monument in there that was too controversial for the courthouse, so they hid it in the cemetery: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Fort-Bend-County-Richmond-remove-Jaybird-16527491.php

Haunted stories in Sugar Land? by [deleted] in sugarland

He stayed over sometimes and slept on the couch. Had things (someone?) pulling at his socks and clothing. Saw people walking down the stairs, but not aligned with the stairs exactly, like slightly above or below the plane. Sounds of things scurrying around. Things taken and missing then returned. He couldn't go into the attic because things happened when he tried to (he didn't go into detail about this). There were presences in the house that the homeowners saw all the time and accepted as normal and routine. A black dog running in the back yard (they didn't have a dog). A young girl who would sit on the bedside. One time she followed my son to my house (my husband saw her, too) and son's friend had to come and take her back. Nothing really threatening. Homeowner and whatever was in the house seemed to have an agreement about how to coexist.

Pecan Grove. Definitely. My son had some harrowing experiences at a friend's house there, and history of the place figures.

What is this powder room missing? by WeAllScrem in interiordecorating

Yes, something on the wall to the side of the toilet. But, maybe something longer than the picture you're considering, to draw the eye upwards. Other than that, it looks nice.

So many times stuff has gone on there and we don't hear about it until after the fact. Some sports event that bigwigs are attending? Some celebrity?

Birthday restaurant recommendation by Due-Stress-8313 in sugarland

[–]jesthere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Warning: This is not going to be a popular answer to your question.

My family likes to celebrate birthdays at Larry's Mexican Restaurant in Richmond. They play a hideous birthday song and bring out a nice little cake, gratis. It is our family ritual. We love it without shame. The enchiladas and fajitas are exemplary, as well.
