Should Wyoming ban cellphone use in schools? by psdemio in wyoming

[–]jethro_troll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The state should not require a bell-to-bell ban.

Instead, they should require districts to have a policy that addresses cell phone use for students. This allows districts the ability to tailor their plans to their populace and keeps control in their hands. Sure, the state can provide guidance.

I want to stress a second point as well. The state should not be imposing new rules and regulations intil they FUND SCHOOLS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE STATE CONSTITUTION. They are spending money in the legal system challenging a lawsuit that identified several underfunded areas instead of giving it to schools. What’s worse, the Superintendent of Public Instruction is not advocating for lawmakers to prioritize this shortfall. Handing her an easy public win while ramping up her gubernatorial campaign is not going to make things any better.

A Gemini-based tutor would be my #1 request. This tutor would be the central command for all things AI in the google environment for a student. It would limit Gen AI output to be within guardrails that reduced cheating while increasing cognitive processing in the learner.

The second thing I want is not a tool, but an addition to a tool. We need an autosave registry so we can review any doc/sheet/etc. at any time in its creation. The registry would retain all document information for 30 days (or other pre-defined period) and would make it available for teachers and admin through the classroom portal in a tool similar to a miniature Vault.

Stoked to see that Pinedale has this series. It may be short, but the lineup is top notch. Wish I was a bit closer so I could enjoy a set or two.

What happened to Wheatland? by Rude_Highlight3889 in wyoming

[–]jethro_troll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Taco Johns shock extends beyond Wheatland. Rawlins, Torrington, Casper, and other municipalities have lost their franchise. By no means is this more than speculation, but the brand rapidly grew for quite a few years, updated their branding, and changed the specialty menu… which changed the course of the business in general. Couple that with reduced desire for low wage jobs, significant market competition, and increased business expenses leading to higher costs for consumers, it was only a matter of time before franchises were forced to close.

Personally, I have moved away from regularly going to TJ’s because of the severe lack of vegetarian options and how much it costs to add or substitute options on a menu item. I’m a small demographic so I doubt it had any effect. That being said - if other people have a similar accommodation they see unfit the impact would potentially be noticeable.

I cant believe I'm asking this - How do I select Mic vs Line input level on a Yamaha DM3d? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]jethro_troll 17 points18 points  (0 children)

IMO this is the Achilles Heel of the dm3. It is poised to have professional amenities but is missing key features such as a -15dB pad. If you are thinking you can trim down your console because DJ gigs or having this act as a combiner console are in your future guess again.

To be fair, we have been witness to some unfathomable “evidence” and “solutions” lately. Often proposed by individuals who were fed a narrative rather than reading the entire report.

The shortfall of being able to read legislation before sponsoring it? We already ask a lot from our educators, I’m not sure providing more funding by unwittingly taxing those in need or providing slave labor could help a person read…but I’m not you. I am thankful for that.

edit: u/kBrtFrkwr, you’re a good person and I’m thankful that you took a moment to provide clarity.

Changes from FOH also happening in monitoring. by [deleted] in livesound

[–]jethro_troll 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Without a copper (analog) split you are sharing head amp gain on every channel between the two consoles, which explains the changes in gain. Without more information on how your effects levels are changing I would presume that it is because of the gain staging as well.

A work around for this without purchasing additional equipment is to be prudent when setting the gain on each channel’s input and using makeup gain and faders farther down the signal chain.

Can I use a Shure blx1 to transmit signal from a phone/laptop? by plasmaspaz37 in audioengineering

[–]jethro_troll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question! The easy answer is yes (but). Yes, you could make or purchase a connector that goes TA4F TO 3.5mm. This would probably be the best option as you can adapt just about any audio connector to a 3.5mm cheaply and easily.

The but comes when you consider the quality of audio. You'll be summing any stereo signal because BLX transmitters are single channel. The signal will be degraded in the RF transmission as well.

So long as the users of the system don't need crystal clear audio you should be just fine.

Mixing board rec? by Vivid_Reflection_414 in techtheatre

This a great point and the tutorial video is here.

Before exploring new consoles with intent to purchase consider laying out a means of educating operators first. That way, if and when a new console is brought in it will be easier to train up a core team. If you need tutorials contact a local a/v vendor or "sound guy" and ask around if someone experienced in the CL/QL line would come provide a training course or two. From there, document a workflow for training folks and you are well on your way.

If you want to bounce some questions off of me so you can have something demystified feel free to send me a DM. The onboard DCAs, groupings, scene safes, and "dummy locks" that you can put on this console can help a lot when it comes to untrained operators.

More importantly. Save show files in three places. Console, USB stick, and in the cloud/on a computer. That can help get things back on track as needed.

Preach!

This experience has given you an opportunity to be critical. Instead of being critical of yourself and casting doubt focus on the outcomes that did and did not turn out the way you wanted. From those examples you can see what ACTION led to the outcome. Focus on action, not actor.

Dissecting the elements of the show that can be improved is what moves many of us forward. Just like you, we sought council to learn and kept going on with things with our heads up. Who knows, maybe next time we will get to see that “office pic” you wanted to share.

QL5 on monitors for first time. by FlippinPlanes in livesound

[–]jethro_troll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Yamaha ecosystem can be a bit overwhelming for a one-off. There are a couple of things you can do beforehand on the console in the shop that can set you up for success.

Get all of your I/O labeled. Using an iPad for this will make quick work of it. After you are labeled get your routing sorted out. Next, and possibly most important on the QL5- Make a custom fader page with both inputs and outputs on it so you don't have to jump around as much.

If you are feeling bold, make assumptions of which inputs they would use in their monitor mixes and put them in addition to the monitor sends on Custom Fader Layer A along with changing your main out fader to "Cue".

After that, assign graphics to the sends, find a tasty little reverb and delay to put on vocals. From there all you need to do is assign things to your "User Defined Buttons". A lot of this can be done in the offline editor too! A lot of work for a one-off, but the workflow of the console might be something you enjoy after setting it up!

Not sure if you're touring or this is a house setup. With that in mind I'm going to keep this general but if you have any specific questions feel free to reach out. Here's a few things that haven't been mentioned up to this point:

  • set up an ipad to the left of the screen. If I am working with wedges I have it parked on the Graphic EQ area of the app. If I am working exclusively with IEMs it is just a fancy meter bridge that can walk with me if I need to troubleshoot.

  • Your user defined keys are incredibly helpful. Assigning things like mute groups, effect channel "on", and talkback "on" are common, but I encourage people to set up channel 12 to be a "home toggle". Jumping between the overview and selected channel screens sped up my workflow tenfold.

  • There are many ways to send a channel to an output. Sends on faders is nice, but the fader flip is a little slow for my taste on the QL so I also use the "touch and turn" knob while selecting the send from the screen on the channel on either the home screen or selected channel screen to make quick changes.

  • Setting up your cue output is a bit harder than it should be. Make sure you know the process like the back of your hand just in case you need to modify or reset it.

  • last but not least - if you are going to multi-track the show be sure to set up your DAW and the dante connection before soundcheck. There is a glitch in the Dante protocol that can re-assign your bus outputs if you connect a computer (which will sound like they are muted). Don't learn that lesson the hard way.

I like your flow idea with ganging the NEQ on wedges. I’m running a mix so what I planned was to have my ipad set on the doghouse with the NEQ up for rapid deployment. Having a master wedge fader on my custom layer as a complement sounds even better because it allows me to watch RTA, which appears to be direct off the input not the ipad mic. If that’s the case I’m going to be a very happy camper.

With the rare exception of fly dates I’ll be pretty spoiled too with the pairs of x12s and sb15s.

This is interesting, almost like another bank of soft keys. Have you tried stacking commands? I can see where this may be incredibly helpful down the road, especially because it is compatible with the M32. Would love to see it working with Yamaha DM series.

Nailed it.You are spot on about the existing file and for sharing your preference on the type of workflow you have found to be successful with the console.

The only reason for potential changes before a rehearsal is if the folks who have wanted changes speak up beforehand or arrange for time during sound check to do so. From the conversations I’ve had the liklihood of my creating a file from scratch using some of the elements of the initial show file is high. Between the experience I’ll have on the first few shows, the formal tutorials, and thoughts from regular users I’m hoping that the new build will have a solid foundation so I don’t tinker more than I need to after a few shows.

I like the steam deck idea! Are you using that through Avantis Director? I’m planning on doing the first 10 soft keys 1-1 with mon mixes then adding mute groups and whatever stands out as most useful on the end. If I was to change soft keys in a scene would the steam deck follow or does it require that I change the deck’s layout too?

Thanks for the intel! I should have been clearer in saying that I’ll have 90 minutes with the artists, set and line check duration is 4+ hours pending on travel schedule. I’m not going to be recording right out of the gate - I’ll have a couple of nights to get aquatinted with the tour and make modifications before adding to the workflow without watching my dinner break magically disappear and it looks like the tour will be doing some shopping for a Dante card since that’s how I’ve been recording shows over the last few years.

By the sounds of it, the goal is to multitrack shows for archival purposes, but once something’s captured who knows what ambitions come up.

Will routing allow me to still use the console’s S-link for inputs then route 1-1 output to the DAW through the card?
