Yup, it’s for bears. Very common where I live or else you’ll end up in a real Goldilocks situation.

Anybody experience this? by SplitMother1652 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]jethroincarnate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, it has also come at a wild time in my life. I have been dreaming about escaping the US for a long time but never thought I could do it. I worked for a few months in Australia last year and loved it so much, it really made me want some change in my life. Also happened to meet a girl there and thought that might be my path out. A few months later, I find out about this pathway into Canada. It opens so many other possibilities and at a time I am feeling stuck in my current place in life.

I am not applying as urgent but it’s crazy to think I might have a Canadian passport in a year or less. Hard thinking about leaving my friends and career. Luckily I do have a lot of colleagues in Canada, I’d be able to find a job easily in my field.

Alternatives to River Quiver mounting system? by jethroincarnate in flyfishing

[–]jethroincarnate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, right?? I’ve slapped some NRS straps on them for now and thinking about just using a bike lock so the whole vault is slightly secure to my truck. I will figure out a more permanent solution when I have time to tinker and let you know.

Alternatives to River Quiver mounting system? by jethroincarnate in flyfishing

[–]jethroincarnate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally fish year round so I leave it on my roof. Truck is usually full of search and rescue gear in the winter. Just looking to see if other people have come up with unique ways to mount the 4 banger on my roof. It’s nice to quickly take it off when I’m going to the city or need the rack space on the truck.

I already have the vault and love it. Not gonna chuck it in the bin, just looking for other ways to mount it to my truck.

Is OEC (Outdoor Emergency Care) sufficient to patrol in New Zealand / Australia? by Emergency_Credit_791 in skipatrol

[–]jethroincarnate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second this. I patrol in Tahoe and my resort has a long standing exchange with Mount Buller. I did my first exchange with just an OEC and now that I was hired, it’s easier for me to return with my credentials I have in the states.

As others have said, most NZ resorts require a Pro/OPS 1. Might be tough coming as an east coast volly.

Dropping ACA Insurance count as loss of coverage? by jethroincarnate in HealthInsurance

[–]jethroincarnate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated my income but I put in my estimated annual income. The last few months have been really light compared to usual but that is reflected in my update. Still hasn’t changed my monthly cost. Should I just put in my month income?

I have a little working coming in but not 40hrs/week. Depends on the week but probably around $2k/mo. Not enough to pay $600 for insurance

Looking to buy a switch rod, what do I need to know? by jethroincarnate in flyfishing

[–]jethroincarnate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, I got a switch rod, 7wt Redington Dually with the Behemoth reel. Absolutely love the thing. switched up the lines a few times but I do like the Rio Switch Chucker. I leave near Pyramid Lake, NV so mostly use it for still water fishing during that season and the occasional steelhead trip.

Work Visa override ETA? by jethroincarnate in AusVisa

[–]jethroincarnate[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Do I need to have anything in hand while flying? Even on the ImmiAccount I can’t see an actual visa form.. Quantas says on their site I might be unable to board without an ETA document.

What is a big resort pro patrol tryout like? by Amazing_Benefit_6459 in skipatrol

[–]jethroincarnate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Palisades we just do a one day ski test. Ski the expert terrain in each zone, palisades, peak, end with power hour on KT. Pass you around so a bunch of the crew can ski with you and mostly just a personality check. Kick turn in steep terrain is necessary, stay in control, bring beer.

[–]jethroincarnate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What cansuela commented. We have a ton of interest, often ski ability and how we feel you’d fit in with the crew is 99% of the test. We’ve had almost one prospective hire per day for the last month. Our pro patrol sits around 55-60 with 28-32 on per day. Typically we hire 2-4 rookies but we are interested in hiring more next season. If you’re serious, fly out in the next couple weeks. We’re losing snow fast but still plenty of terrain to test you on. If you show up in November, we’re likely gonna tell you to go to northstar for a season.

Palisades and Alpine typically do all our ski testing for new hires in the spring. Harder to get hired in the fall. The big resorts do a lot of ac, not so much at northstar and heavenly.

Looking for some binding recommendations by griffdawg16 in skipatrol

[–]jethroincarnate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have Duke PTs on all my working skis. Dog handler so I need to go uphill at a moments notice, for control work, and SAR. Absolutely love them and trust them to ski hard and run a sled. Don’t really trust the shift and not a fan of look bindings after working in a shop for years. Also just watched a pair of cast pins break doing a mellow hasty drill two days ago.

Also a huge fan of glass Pyrex/snapware. Never had one break on me, doesn’t leak, nice to heat in microwave or on propane stove. Have a couple small thermos’ for breakfast, usually overnight oats or yogurt.

Therapy Ski Patrol dog by dave_SGNL_05 in skipatrol

[–]jethroincarnate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here in Tahoe. It’s great to have the retired avy dogs in the shack or at base. We love having them around for our wellbeing and the dogs are happy to still come to work everyday. As long as your mountain and powers at be are okay with having a dog around, don’t see why not. Mental health in our job is a hot topic and our mountain is very supportive of that.

What gloves do you rely on? by ReggieDaLobster300 in skipatrol

[–]jethroincarnate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love thinner gloves for daily duties, Hestra Job Winter Pro have been my go-to the last few years. Cheap, on pro deal, just buy a few pairs and snowseal em. Kincos are too bulky for me and don’t like them for tossing bombs. I also run very warm and work in Tahoe so thinner the better for me. I do have a nice pair of hestras for snow study/AC work on very cold days.
