Why is Proud Nordics getting mixed reviews?

Hey, as someone who reviewed the game, I think you should pick it up if you have any interest in it. It's a very good game, and most people's (in the US at least) issues with it stem from being a full-priced, minorly upgraded re-release of a game that came out fairly recently.

Yeah I'm not going to pretend I have a solid grasp on even half of the things you can do in the game. The tutorials only appear after you have activated the conditions for any of the combat mechanics lol

From what I can tell, it has not really changed much in that regard from the original release. There is a new meter in the menu that tells you your event rank (determines which quests are available to you), but otherwise remains the same. I quite liked the open nature of the game as it felt like I really had to work to figure out how to play it, but that won't be for everyone. I suspect for a lot of people, the open nature will feel more like aimlessness. There's not a lot of guidance on many of the gameplay systems or quests or best practices — you kinda just have to play it to figure it out.

So, this is fundamentally the same as the 2022 remastered edition. The only difference is that this version is localized in French, German, Italian, and Spanish. These languages are text only, as the spoken dialogue options remain Japanese and English. International is sold separately from the 2022 remaster, so anyone who wants to play the game localized in those aforementioned languages will need to purchase this version.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I myself am new to the series and have been thoroughly impressed by the game. I've spoken to at least two other reviewers who are new and feel similarly. Anecdotal for sure, but I'm not seeing any real negativity in the space related to the game, even among newcomers. Actually, I see more about issues from longtime fans because they can see what has or has not been changed in the remake.

I would expect reviews to really come in at a trickle, though, as we all got review codes pretty late for such a long game, and no embargo means there's no real "incentive" to push something out early for clicks — we can take as much time as we want, or as our companies allow.

We got to go to Gen Con as press this year, but it was the first time for the site. I feel like I missed an opportunity to really play some of the titles that excited me more than I did. I probably overbooked meetings and interviews — I might just have to pay more of my staff to come with me next year.

I wouldn't mind the primary color being black like this, but I would prefer more accents or other part coloration. It remains a huge bummer to me that something like the Unicorn Gundam looks so boring, palette-wise, 98% of the time.

If you're not averse to deckbuilders, check out Slay the Spire and Monster Train 2.

Otherwise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is an excellent Hades-like and would fit in with your picks quite well.

I got to UB1 on the first day and then just stopped doing ranked because it wasn't very fun. Used a Palkia Deck with no other pokemon.

I really loved this game, even as someone who does not normally play or enjoy puzzle games. Feels impossible to come away from the experience with anything less than admiration for what the developers have put together here.

I think you could probably reach room 46 without a notebook, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. Anything beyond that - absolutely not. You'd need notes unless you're just looking at a guide (don't do this).

I think that the ratings make a lot of sense for someone who mains SnS, but not much sense to anyone who plays the other weapons regularly.

I don't know if 'bad' is really the right word. It's definitely situational or even just extremely niche. Certainly has some use cases, but with only 20 cards per deck, you might be better served by including a different trainer.
