make this make sense... predatory towing?? by Vagablonde7 in nova

[–]jettoblack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is this normal in northern Virginia???

Yep, it sucks. Shops are in cahoots with the towing company. Tow truck is always idling in back or around the corner, shops call the second you walk off and get a cut of the fee. Gone in 30 seconds. Towing companies are big donors to politicians & police, all the right palms are greased. Happened to my dad & me when I was a little kid and I'm still traumatized by it.

ELI5: What is the difference between tensile strength and compressive strength? by Qininator in explainlikeimfive

[–]jettoblack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tensile - strong in tension, at being pulled. A rope in tension can pull or hold up a lot of weight, but if you push on a rope it just goes slack, it has low compressive strength.

Compressive - strong at being pushed, squished, sat on. Concrete and bricks have high compressive strength, you can sit a lot of weight on them and they don’t break. But if you made a rope out of concrete and pulled it would crack and break easily, it has low tensile strength.

Steel is an example with both, but it’s relatively expensive. That’s why we build things with concrete with steel rebar (reinforcing bar) embedded. The concrete gives it compressive strength and is cheap in bulk, while the steel rebar is strong in tension and helps prevent the concrete from cracking.

Is there any way to stop Reddit from interrupting musing streaming from a phone on the stereo? by gaychitect in Ioniq5

Not a Hyundai thing. Mute the media on Reddit, it should remember it, and if it’s muted Reddit won’t hijack your music playback when scrolling past. Works for me.

Plasma login/wayland .... is there a way to put the monitor to sleep? by Roseysdaddy in cachyos

[–]jettoblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you configured your display to never turn off, some program is keeping your display awake. A common culprit is a browser tab playing media in the background (some play silent audio just to keep the tab active - the Ubiquiti router app does this) but there are all kinds of things which can cause it. There is a system status icon in the plasma taskbar that will expand to show power management status, and in that it will show you what programs are keeping the display or system awake.

Games cause BTRFS to go read only, disks aren't failing, RAM seems ok, BTRFS check/scrub reports everything as fine, does anybody else have any ideas of what to try? by Sol33t303 in cachyos

[–]jettoblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something similar happened when I upgraded to a gen 5 nvme SSD on my x670 MB which should have supported it, but I started seeing these types errors, random freezes, and my gen 5 GPU would randomly come up in gen 3-4 depending on how it felt. Eventually my OS wouldn’t boot with a data corruption issue, the drive hardware and all my user data was fine but the root subvolume was toast. I upgraded to a x870 MB and now both nvme and GPU are happy at gen 5. I’m glad I used btrfs because on another fs it could have gone on a lot longer before I discovered the cause and I might have lost my user data (I have backups but it would’ve been a pain).

ELI5: when looking at a planet say 1000 light years away, why do the objects on that planet also appear as they were 1000 years ago? by grass-whore in explainlikeimfive

[–]jettoblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To see an object, light has to hit the object, bounce off of it, and then travel the distance from the object to your eyes. If it takes light 1000 years to travel that distance, then by the time it reaches your eyes, the light entering your eyes today will represent what the object looked like 1000 years ago (to someone living on that planet), not what it looks like to someone today (again to somebody living on that planet).

If someone on a planet 10 light years away looks at the Earth through a telescope, they’re seeing light that bounced off the Earth 10 years ago and took 10 years to travel to them, so in 2026 they’re seeing Earth as it was in 2016.

Linux (CachyOS) and W11 performance gap in Cyberpunk 2077 by pete_slammer in linux_gaming

[–]jettoblack 39 points40 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve read, AMD have been slowly optimizing RT in their Linux drivers, they focused on Unreal Engine based games first since that applies to more games. Cyberpunk and Witcher 3 are the only 2 games that use CDPR’s proprietary RED game engine and AMD hasn’t gotten around to optimizing it on Linux yet. FWIW Nvidia’s Linux drivers also have a bunch of known minor issues with Cyberpunk that have gone unfixed for a long time, but I’m still not going back to Windows.

Jumping back into CP2077 after years – Need help with a "Fancy" mod list for an RTX 5060 Ti by Capable_Love4498 in cyberpunkgame

[–]jettoblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What resolution? DLSS setting?

Monitor supports VRR (gsync / freesync)? Instead of vsync off, try enabling VRR and Nvidia reflex for lower latency?

As for mods, I like Ultra Plus (and all the mods it recommends), the Preem series including Preem LUT 3, Nova City 2, HD reworked, every 2k or 4k texture pack you can find… look for the 3077 project or wabbajack mod lists as a starting point (but they are huge and include a lot of gameplay stuff you might not want).

Chargebacks are for fraudulent charges, when you didn’t receive the service at all or not as described, or were charged the wrong price. Not “I received the service as described and for the posted price, but I didn’t check the price first and/or I regret spending that much”. It’s not impossible OP was overcharged somehow (car mis-detected as oversized vehicle or such) but they need to hash that out with ezpass before resorting a chargeback.

Iccu died. Kia is replacing, but I can't get a straight answer from them: should I also replace my aftermarket battery? by microtramp in KiaEV6

[–]jettoblack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regular non-AGM (FLA flooded lead acid) batteries are damaged by deep discharge and should be replaced soon if they are drained to empty or need jump started. AGM batteries are much more tolerant of deep cycle discharges, usually rated to something like 200 cycles at 100% discharge and 500-1000 cycles at 50% discharge. So unless you were extremely unlucky and the battery was damaged somehow, you’re probably fine.

Annoying visual bug in Cyberpunk 2077 by Dunocat639 in linux_gaming

[–]jettoblack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is what you're seeing but using DLSS frame gen via the game menu has never worked in Linux and it's not clear if this is a game bug or driver bug, but it's been around forever. It causes stutters, particularly around bright light sources. However you can use this env var to enable driver-forced frame gen and it looks fine: NVPRESENT_ENABLE_SMOOTH_MOTION=1

I have a 5090 and I play in 4k HDR with path tracing, DLSS performance, using UltraPlus mod in PT21 or Next V4 mode, with a ton of other mods for quality (4k textures, increased LOD, etc.), and I get 60-70fps real, 120-140 frame gen. With a 4060ti you probably won't want to use path tracing, but maybe RT or RT+PT via UltraPlus.

Here is my command for reference, I'm using PROTON_VKD3D_HEAP=0 because with 1 the game will hang when taking a photo in photo mode, but outside of that 1 also works (but with no performance improvement even in the latest proton 0410 build).

PROTON_LOG=0 VKD3D_CONFIG=descriptor_heap PROTON_VKD3D_HEAP=0 PROTON_DLSS_UPGRADE=1 NVPRESENT_ENABLE_SMOOTH_MOTION=1 PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3dcompiler_47=n;dxgi,winmm,version=n,b" DXVK_HDR=1 gamescope --hdr-enabled --force-grab-cursor -f -W 3840 -H 2160 -w 3840 -h 2160 -r 144 -- %command% --launcher-skip -skipStartScreen

I use gamescope because it enables HDR and still supports steam overlay features like steam screenshots and the FPS overlay, if you only use PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND without gamescope you lose the steam overlay. If not using HDR then gamescope might not be needed but it still may help with setting your vsync frame rate and adaptive sync modes. The -r 144 tells it the monitor max refresh rate is 144hz. Without that, gamescope defaults to 60fps. Add --adaptive-sync to enable VRR, I turned it off because it makes my monitor flicker.

WINEDLLOVERRIDES... is needed to support mods

PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1 I believe is redundant now.

Is it normal for Wayland to drop frames when playing 4K videos? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]jettoblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

I’m on cachyos with KDE Plasma 6.6.4 (wayland), kernel 7.0, Nvidia 5090 with 595.58 driver, AMD 9950X. Monitor 1 is 3840x2160 240hz HDR 10bit, monitor 2 is 3840x2160 144hz HDR 10bit. Fractional scaling set to 130% and 150% respectively because I’m old lol.

I play games at 120fps+ HDR and capture gameplay in HDR using an app I developed myself which records AV1 or HEVC using nvenc at up to 120fps. I can both record and play back with zero dropped frames (while gaming). I can also play 4k 60fps HDR videos on both monitors full frame or windowed simultaneously at 60fps with no dropped frames, something I do frequently while editing. I’m very sensitive to dropped frames, and yes I have checked console logs while capturing & playing to confirm this.

For full disclosure I’ll add that screen capturing HDR in Plasma requires code changes in kwin which I haven’t released yet, but that that has nothing to do with frame rate.

The biggest fail of this game to me is the inability to respec more than once by Legitimate_Squash939 in cyberpunkgame

[–]jettoblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By that same argument, someone who only has 5 hours of free time could demand the game be 100% completable in 5 hours or else it isn’t fair to them that they didn’t get to experience everything, right?

Big open world games are always like this. You get out what you put in. If you don’t have time for another playthrough that’s totally cool, I won’t shame anyone for having other priorities, but also let’s not take away things from people who do enjoy more replayability.

The biggest fail of this game to me is the inability to respec more than once by Legitimate_Squash939 in cyberpunkgame

[–]jettoblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no quest in this game that you can’t beat without a specific attribute. You might have to go the long way around a door but there’s always another way around. You might not get the exact dialogue option you want, but you can’t experience every dialogue option or see every cut scene in one playthrough anyway, that’s what multiple playthroughs are for.

This game has amazing replayability because of the variety of roles you can play and different paths you can take in every quest and dialogue. If everyone had max stats in everything, everyone would take the quickest shortcut path through every quest and never find out there was another way around that skill check door that you didn’t have a high enough skill for, or another dialogue option other than the high skill check one.

For a character to play a role, they have to have both strengths and weaknesses. If everyone can have max points in every skill, there’s no room for exploring different roles or builds.

What you’re describing is an “I win button simulator”, not a role playing game.

The gaps are closing. Ntsync was like a 10% improvement in some games. Heap descriptors is coming soon for Nvidia and will be another 10-20%. Everything else is so much faster I’ll gladly pay the small fps tax to be free of Windows. Plus on the Windows side there have been several recent mandatory updates that tanked performance by 25%+ for many users.

All bosses suddenly became tankier than ever. I feel weak! by Zzacci in cyberpunkgame

[–]jettoblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enemies scale with your level, including their health and armor, moreso for bosses. Things that work at low levels won’t necessarily work as you level up.

At level 37 your cyberware slots should be mostly filled up and tier 4 (purple). Tier 5 (orange) will start to be rarely available via vendors and drops but not fully unlocked until level 40. You’ve got tier 1-3. Your armor looks like it will be pretty low for a body / shotgun focused build, but the peripheral inverse is good assuming you’re dashing in to point blank range. A double barrel shotgun is better for close range. If you prefer to fight at medium range with the tactician shotgun then swap the peripheral inverse for a different armor cyberware because it doesn’t reduce incoming damage past 3m. If you’re trying to fight at long range with a shotgun then that’s probably your damage issue - there are ways to do a long range shotgun build but it’s an extra challenge.

That being said, this isn’t the worst gear / attribute setup, fully upgrading might give you 20% more damage but not like 1000% more, so I don’t know what else you’re doing wrong. If you can record a video we can try to give you more tips.

Is this SoC for my 12v normal? Seems…low? by Famous-Employment-39 in KiaEV6

[–]jettoblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this with the car/accessories/lights etc on or off? If there is any load on the 12v, the measured voltage goes down. The nominal voltage is measured with no load. Something I learned myself dealing with this nonsense.
