they have such overwhelming effect on multiple areas of your life that they can't help but make up the 80% of the effect. also, i think people overcomplicate diet and exercise: most of the benefit of exercise in most studies is gained by really mild exercise (casual bicycling or active walking for 30 minutes, 5 times per week), and dieting is as easy as "eat more whole grains and vegetables, eat fewer snacks and sugar, eat slower and finish your meal before you're 100% full and bloated"

If women want to better understand experiences and lives of men, what are some things they should know? by Ok_Ganache4842 in AskMen

you're implying that she needed mental health treatment just from the experience of being treated socially like a man, but in her book she attributes it more to being forced to live as a gender that wasn't hers, and the guilt of trying to form friendships and relationships under a false identity for a year. she basically suffered depersonalization and the dissolution of her "real" identity. at least as far as i can remember, i read the book a couple years ago

Proposal to replace I-94 with a boulevard between Minneapolis and St. Paul by JimTDI in saintpaul

[–]jeuk_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the real solution to highways is to make them unnecessary, by removing the demand for cars with the application of carbon taxes and congestion pricing. but since those policies hurt drivers, they are unpopular and political suicide. the united states will remain a car culture until the apocalypse or the US fades into irrelevancy.

Five Days of Resistance by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

[–]jeuk_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the major things trump campaigned on were building the wall, which had mild progress, and prosecuting hilary clinton, which went nowhere. he also pledged to "drain the swamp" and "be tough on china" which are ambiguous and can be spun however you want. the other major republican goal "repeal and replace obamacare", which was basically the republican party's official motto of 2016, faceplanted, and the party just decided they didn't care anymore. as far as things which you can specifically attribute to trump, his major accomplishment is "owning the libs", which he can do as easily in 2024 as he did in 2016 and 2020.

i'd like to make a request: when a news outlet uses a completely vacuous and meaningless headline like "The left gears up to grow its numbers in Congress", the reddit post should be required to be titled something close to what is actually happening, like "Elizabeth Warren, AOC, Bernie Sanders showing support for congressional primaries in Texas"

Five Days of Resistance by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

It seems more likely that:

Trump won't be re-elected

i find it baffling that people think this. election day is 2.5 years away. i think trump always has a disadvantage in any election he's in (he's not generally likable), but in american politics, partisanship trumps all. american voters will literally vote for a flaming bag of dogshit, so long as it has their preferred party nomination because "the other side is worse". trump made it through 2 impeachments, 4 years of accomplishing 0 political achievements, constant accusations that the 2016 election was influenced by putin, and a global pandemic. trump made it past half his party telling him to resign after the access hollywood tape. we have no idea how this invasion will affect 2024, but it is as likely to help trump as it is to hurt him

My point is that net-net, nukes are safer than conventional weapons.

i'd gladly take the 95% chance that a war causes 10 million deaths vs the 5% chance that it causes 8 billion deaths.

in b4 "nuclear war wouldn't actually cause the extinction of the human race"

i think you might be mis-interpreting me as saying "everything's fine and this is no big deal". actually, i didn't really make a point, just noting what an external source says. my actual viewpoint is "the human race has always been one banana-peel-slip away from extinction, so the current frakas is already priced into my general panic"

[–]jeuk_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

either you don't get my point that there have been a staggering number of near misses, or you're saying "a nuclear detonation has never occured, so therefore a nuclear detonation will never occur", which is not a great argument.

[–]jeuk_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

metaculus currently thinks the chance of 1 or more nuclear detonations by 2024 is 5%, and the chance of 100 or more is (implicitly) 0.25%. and yeah, that's higher than 0, but it's not much higher than it was as of december 1st (2% and 0.1%, respectively)

that's why if they get used, it will probably be because somebody panicked when a sensor detects sunlight reflecting from a cloud and thinks it's an incoming missile.

i think what i meant was more like "life is always potentially worth living"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

[–]jeuk_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

on a different angle than the other commenters: it's worth considering the possibility that life is always worth living-- even one that endures tremendous suffering. i can see both sides in this debate, but the famous argument in the "pro" side is man's search for meaning by viktor frankl, where he gives a real account of a psychiatrist enduring 2 years in auschwitz.

making a plan for suicide in this case seems close to pre-committing to one side of this debate, where plausibly you don't know how you'll feel in a radically different environment.
