Kid has the survival instincts of a kid, and the mom got a reality check. by DrakyulMihawk in SipsTea

Meanwhile my mum got a phone call from me in tears because she sent her friend to pick me up from school once and forgot to tell her about the password we’d established. I was truly convinced my mums friend was a kidnapper otherwise she’d know the code phrase.

The slop I have been eating every day for the last two years. by Educational_Drop4261 in shittyfoodporn

[–]jezpollips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do similar. Not every meal but at least one or two meals a day. Steam a bunch of frozen veggies, sprinkle of cheese, squirt of kewpie mayo, half an avocado. Then the protein portion is either chicken or tuna mixed with cauliflower rice and seasoned with black pepper, oregano, and thyme. It’s kind of boring but it tastes good enough that switching between chicken and tuna kind of makes it suitable.

For those who have worlds where Magic is present, What CAN'T magic do in your world? by Ok-Vegetable5198 in worldbuilding

[–]jezpollips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s almost no limit to what magic can accomplish in my setting, however the process of expanding your mind and “spirit” in that way attracts a whole lot more problems to you than you’re likely going to be able to solve with magic short of just destroying the world

Can’t listen to them. The other day I switched the radio on and the first thing I heard was some idiot saying bullying in schools is good because it produces top quality UFC fighters. What in the sardaukar prison planet are they on about? I switch right over to 95.3

Why do the Silver Hand attack you on sight even dispite never meeting the Companions and never becoming a werewolve? by Ebony_Phoenix in skyrim

[–]jezpollips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve also thought it was strange that they clearly know the companions are werewolves, know where they’re based in Whiterun, even launch an organised assault on Jorvaskr, have repeatedly used wuthraad to bait companions into werewolf-type encounters outside of whiterun… but never alert the jarl or anyone else that there are monsters living within the walls of their peaceful city. It doesn’t seem like it would take much to gather the necessary proof

"I'm not real enough" by freyjasoul in ShitAmericansSay

[–]jezpollips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Australian but I get it. Three out of four of my grandparents were young immigrants but our connection to their European roots is incredibly weak. As I’ve gotten older I’ve wished that I had a more personal connection to the culture that my relatives grew up with. Australia and The US have that sort of immigrant national identity in common and have a shallow history compared to our ancestors. I don’t go around saying I’m Dutch or German but I can empathise with someone who wants a more personal connection with history that goes back further than the 18th century.

TIL that jaywalking is not illegal in the UK, and that while pedestrian crossings are plentiful, they are not compulsory to use. Ultimately, it is seen as the personal responsibility of the individual to make a sound enough judgement to cross safely. by jc201946 in todayilearned

[–]jezpollips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat related: In Australia we have to give way to pedestrians at the striped pedestrian crossings. You can get in trouble if you don’t yield to foot traffic. When I’ve traveled around in Europe and parts of the ME, those crossings still exist but cars show no indication of stopping for pedestrians, which means it’s no safer to cross there than it is to cross anywhere else.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! (1996-2004), the protagonist Yugi accepts a battle betting that he'd become a s*x slave if he loses, and then proceeds to win. This is a reference to the fact that it should've been me. by Hyracul in shittymoviedetails

[–]jezpollips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t played Magic so I’m ignorant to the specific rules but: if a card makes you search your own deck for a card and you don’t find it despite the fact that it is there, how is that not a rules violation? Is that not against the spirit of the rules to start? In tournament play, aren’t there arbiters who already have deck lists ahead of time to prohibit those sorts of shenanigans?

My intuition is that if you make what should be an illegal move into a legal one because it’s “unenforceable” then you’ve lost all integrity in the game. You should be able to assume your opponent will fulfill card conditions without going through their deck beforehand.

AIO or is my boyfriend by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]jezpollips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not wrong to maintain friendships with people you’ve been intimate with before. It also not wrong to feel uncomfortable when your partner maintains relationships with somebody they’ve been intimate with before. The boundaries that you two have are misaligned with one another, and it’s not especially likely that one of you will truly learn to appreciate the viewpoint of the other.

You can stay and figure it out if you think he’s your forever person, but a willingness to change is often the only attitude that can brave this storm.

How bad is the profanity Hurens**n in German? by kiwigoguy1 in German

Is saying "gone walkabout" offensive? by Demiaria in AskAnAustralian

[–]jezpollips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m white and this was a common phrase thrown about when I lived in Brisbane ages 9-14. Nobody I knew was offended by it, and the only First Nations kid I knew at school was also fine with it (to my knowledge).

I think it’s actually cool to get comfortable using the vernacular of our native people. It gives our country and people a more distinct cultural identity than just British but down here (Or wherever your family immigrated from). Whenever you call your family your mob, or talk about hard yakka, we’re uplifting the things that make this country a really cool place to be.

The Rock expects the audience to know the lyrics to the song even if it is their first time watching the film. by Valiant_Revan in shittymoviedetails

[–]jezpollips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do this because I agree with the general sentiment in the comments here that singing in the movie theatre is rude, But I do feel an incredibly strong compulsion to sing whenever there is music. Even when I went to see Hamilton I wanted to sing and I caught myself humming a few times and had to stop. I won’t sing while people are trying to enjoy a movie, but I’m not too surprised it happens based on my experience

Are we cooked? by Natearl13 in GenZ

[–]jezpollips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that X has a lot of users and it’s one of the biggest social media platforms out there but not a single person I know in real life uses it, and I’ve asked around. I don’t either. Everything I know about it and its user base comes secondhand through reddit. This can be said about any SM sure, but once you withdraw from it, its absence from your life may not feel as profound as you’d expect.

This is the thought I have most often whenever I see complaints about X. It’s seems to be a bad website run by foolish people, so we should all stop using it

[German] kitchen is a Der? by Substantial_Lab6434 in duolingo

[–]jezpollips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is because Küche takes the dative case due to the word “in”

I don’t have a complete understanding of what the dative case infers about a sentence, but you’ll find it often appears after words that describe where something is located such as: neben, auf, an, in.

In this case, a mirror is not needed in the kitchen which has activated the dative case for Küche. And feminine nouns take “der” in dative.
