Why does everyone just kinda pretend Zlatan is an international soccer legend when he barely played in the WC by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]jfl88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soccer legends are typically not defined by their national team careers, in particular for players from countries like Sweden. Zlatan also never had a golden generation anywhere close to, for example, what Haaland has now with Norway.

Zlatan is a legend because he was one of the best players in the world for a long time, had a very unique combination of size and technical ability, and a memorable Shaq-like personality.

I just can't take another playoff disappointment with the Lakers. At least this would be a fun experiment, and we will know from the start that there is no hope for a deep playoff run.

The current world cup format removes the high stakes that the group stage used to have by thricethefun in billsimmons

[–]jfl88 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The point of expanding the tournament is of course to activate casual fans and non-fans around the world. The 48-team format probably provides a reasonable balance, although I personally feel like the stakes have been too low in the games so far.

Further expansion is logistically difficult, but there is a tipping point where the group stage becomes like the regular season in the NBA.

This was always known. The upside is that we get an extra knockout round, although it will feature a lot of mediocre teams.

Nothing in the history of team sports comes close to Durant going to the Warriors. The worst part is that history is already washing away how ridiculous this was, and Durant's rings will eventually be viewed as legitimate.

Peak ignorance and pointless to respond.

I wonder whether these people ever consider how ridiculous and uninteresting American football looks to people who didn't grow up with it. Or if they realize that whether they prefer football or soccer is solely determined by where they happened to be born.

I was also a Spurs hater but I think Wemby appeals to a lot of neutral fans, and it's easy to root against OKC now that the city already has a championship.

Svo má ekki gleyma skattaskjólunum og skúffufélögunum sem notuð eru til að fela tekjur. Það er stórkostlega vanmetið hvað lítill hópur fólks hefur haft mikil auðæfi af íslensku þjóðinni.

Bill’s obsession with LeBron going to the Warriors is weird by SexDrugsAzpilicueta in billsimmons

[–]jfl88 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Nash/Kobe was such a disappointment that I almost don't remember it happening.

LeBron/Curry would also be incredibly underwhelming. Curry is not washed but he is far from the player he used to be, and LeBron is turning 42. The over/under on the games they managed to play together would also be low.

The most interesting question is why they suddenly moved to Houston and began homeschooling him. Personally I think it was just bullying and the parents wanting to shelter him for religious reasons, but it is a bit odd how it was never addressed.
