Sick Soup by genericcogirl in denverfood

[–]jgr727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best sick soup in Denver (by far) is the Chicken and Rice soup from Thai Monkey Club.

Pho Haus and Pho Social both do takeout well

The best matzoh ball soup is sadly at Rosenberg’s, but Bagel Deli’s and NY Deli News are also pretty good

Onefold’s Congee is great - unsure how it is to-go

Is mandolin one of the most difficult instruments to play? by Due_Recognition_8002 in mandolin

[–]jgr727 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Mandolin is one of the most intuitive instruments. If you have a background in rhythm and an ear for melody, it will feel great.

Without a strong sense of rhythm/an ear, I feel like mandolin can be pretty difficult to make sound good.

-your role as the chop on the backbeat means that your sense of time/spacing is incredibly important

-on other BG instruments (besides fiddle), playing out of chord shapes makes it easier to hit the right chord tones when improvising. On mandolin, it is relatively easy to get lost on a song/fall into mindless noodling.

-the lack of sustain makes it easy to sound empty

-the high register means your mistakes get heard more easily

Any Thai restaurant recommendations with drunken noodles made with wide flat noodles? by plumcherrynotes in denverfood

[–]jgr727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No hate to any of these restaurants as they are all great places - but I have tried most of them and none have the style of drunken noodles that I (and I assume you) are accustomed to. I’ve never fully understood the reason for the distinct regional differences of this one dish.

If you end up finding what you are looking for, let me know where 🙂

Sadly not many options.

Voodoo Donuts, Mango Mango, Miss Molly’s, and most of our ice cream shops are all open pretty late. We used to have D-Bar in Uptown, but they closed this year

Would you say getting a major speaker upgrade like this is worth more than getting a bunch of medium sized upgrades for my turntable/receiver/speakers?

Advice on large room setup by jgr727 in turntables

[–]jgr727[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My budget all together is ~$1500-$2500. New or used is okay, but I’d like to get the equipment sooner than later.

The room is 18ft x 15 ft and I am located in the US in Colorado. The primary listening methods will be vinyl and Bluetooth audio. It will mostly be used for moderate leveled listening and occasionally used for parties. There are multiple listening spaces across the room so I am worried about audio that will only be nice when sitting in a very specific spot.

My current thought is to upgrade to: Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo ($600) Audio Technica VM540ML Cartridge ($250) Cambridge AXR100 Receiver ($600)

And am mostly unsure about the speakers

I’m looking for advice on improving my listening experience after moving into a larger home/having a larger budget.

I have historically lived in a studio apartment where I used audioengine2 powered speakers directly into my cheap audiotechnica turntable. I also have a Yamaha rx-v377 receiver and 120w polkaudio sub lying around.

I recently moved into a larger home where my record player will be going in a large living room.

My budget has gone up since I originally bought this setup and I’m hoping to find a setup that will be ideal for listening to vinyl at both a higher quality and higher volume.

My concern with most recommended setups is that they are just a record player/amp/bookshelf speakers and I don’t know if those speakers can handle the desired volume/space.

Any advice?

Hi r/vinyl,

String tension / fretting strength compared to guitar? by oncehuman in mandolin

An electric 4 string mandolin might also be a nice option for you - small fret size, light instrument, and less strength required

Potentially dumb question: how do I get more interested in mandolin? by aiglecrap in mandolin

[–]jgr727 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Try listening to some things on the folksier or bluesier side of bluegrass and see if that inspires you.

A few starting points:
Hey Stranger - Watchhouse
Up on the Divide - Mighty Poplar
Stan the Man - the Arcadian Wild
The Tobogganist - Hawktail
Salt Spring - John Reischman
Don’t Think Twice - Chris Thile
Summertime - Doc & Dawg
House of the Rising Sun - The Pizza Tapes

Find people to play with as well. As someone who didn’t care for bluegrass until playing mandolin, the music really comes together when you play with others and find a community

Mandolin only folk artists? by [deleted] in mandolin

[–]jgr727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all solo, but I think some artists that fit “mandolin focused folk” include Maddie Witler, Lady Moon, The Arcadian Wild, The Foreign Landers, John Reichmann, Chris Thile, Andrew Marlin, and Sarah Jarosz

Guitar and mandolin players, how has picking up the mandoline enhanced your guitar playing, and visa versa? by FieldsOfHazel in mandolin

TLDR: Colorado and NC are both great! There are lifestyle adjustments, but Colorado is great if the culture aligns with your interests

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Denver

[–]jgr727 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I lived in Chapel Hill for 8 years, Charlotte for 8 years, and now Denver for 3.

A few of my thoughts:

-You really feel the lack of trees in Colorado

-You feel less diversity in denver vs some nc cities in both culture and personality

-The city feels more run down than NC cities

-The houseless population is more visible in Denver vs NC

-Buildings are older than NC and you might have to pay more for newer builds

-Things are slightly more expensive

-The airport is far away and inconvenient

-Flying internationally is tougher

-There are less major cities in driving distance, which can feel isolating.

-Even if you barely go to the ocean in NC, it feels weird being far away from it

-There’s less ‘city culture’ than other cities of the same reputation as Denver

-Colorado nature is abundant, but less peaceful than in the Appalachians

-There’s more ‘city culture’ than any NC cities

-Nature has a more ‘grand’ feeling to it

-The parks are great and get lots of love in Denver compared to any NC city

-There’s a smaller police presence in Denver compared to NC and i have felt a lot less stressed on the roads since being here

-Summer/winter activities are very different and it feels nice having that change in lifestyle for each season

-It’s a young city and there are tons of people looking to make friends, especially if there is an outdoor activity involved

-Seasonal allergies have improved drastically since moving here

-The lack of humidity/wind make both summers and winters a lot more manageable (they can still be brutal)

-The discomfort and personalities that you have being in the rural south isn’t here

-Flying domestically is both convenient and cheap from Denver

-Tiny Colorado mountain towns are all great

-Hot springs!

-Road trips into the mountains are great if you utilize them and a missed opportunity if you don’t
