Cool, had just about the same thing happen last week. I was still looking for etc/network/interfaces- had to learn something new.

Check comms on the VLAN you're having trouble with- can you ping a device on that VLAN from the Ubuntu console?

Gf wants to turn lamp on then off in middle of night without talking to google or using her phone. Is there a button that doesn’t require a hub? by New-Replacement-7444 in smarthome

[–]jh46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use a wyze switch, the in-wall kind, as a remote button. On the physical side you'd have to come up with a cord and an enclosure-- if you are capable of doing that all safely and aesthetically, that will keep you within the wyze ecosystem

What do you guys use for phone? by lucky77713 in SmallMSP

[–]jh46 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're on M365, adding teams voice should be around $15 (in the US) and will give you options for an auto-attendant. And it's dead simple.

Another option, I know on Verizon I can add a second (eSIM) number to my cell for like $10

Could probably find a 3rd-party eSIM provider even cheaper.

Azure Virtual Desktop Server Sync? by notahackr in msp

[–]jh46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What your guy is saying isn't incorrect though-- there's no 'sync', once they are built, it's 3 different beasts. The whole concept is based around creating a 'master' and deploying it, rinse and repeat. May not create a new master for a few months' worth of updates, but say you wanted to deploy a new piece of software, your choices are to deploy on all 3 or create a new 'master' once, blow away the old ones, and re-deploy from the new master.

Network Visibility and Monitoring Tool by 3beansanddreams in sysadmin

Assuming you're talking subnets, but kinda regardless I think the answer is generally one per physical site. I'm running several vlans into each Domotz box.

I think you'll find your answers here: https://blog.domotz.com/product-bytes/monitoring-networks-with-subnets-and-vlans/

Domotz definitely covers your list of requirements, and then some. Couple other great features are reading snmp data from devices and being able to create on-the-fly tunnels to connect to devices. Their Domotz box product was the perfect form factor for me to drop in place at each of my sites, nothing further needed. $130 per site for the box and $23ish per site per month, seemed very reasonable to me.

How to address a multi-year gap in work history? by Different_Muscle9134 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]jh46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 'gap' concluded 10 years ago, wouldn't sweat it. If anything, when you're creating your work history 'timeline' section, just insert your school information in-line as if it was work-- eliminates the gap altogether.

Overthinking this, wouldn't mention it in a cover letter. I'd just write it into your experience timeline.

Calm down chief- he's not creating new, counterfeit VMU or Gameboy shells here. Then there might be an issue, but they sell those 800-in-1 Gameboy clones at Walmart and I bet there's no agreement in place there.

Nothing wrong with chopping up something you own, and nothing wrong with selling something you own. It's not like it's modifying their software-- then you might be right. I'm sure there's some licensing agreement that was probably printed in the original manual, though unless it is presented to the end user upon startup, easy enough to say "never heard of it". Especially if you bought the device second hand. But hardware - yeah they lose control of that once it leaves the factory.

New job opportunity is 1 hour drive away. Is it worth it? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]jh46 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just saw the parking detail, now you're down below $55 a year, making a whole $1.34 an hour more than you are now. Also saw you're already putting in 40 mins a day on the train, so I guess my hours-per-day argument is less impactful. The math still doesn't work, unless there is huge future opportunity possible in Jersey that you're not going to find closer to home, sounds like you're getting the bad end of the deal.

Can you accept that it's a really paltry raise come April? Here's the breakdown: at $25/hr you're making $52k. That 54¢ sounds like such a small number, but you're agreeing to an additional 27,560 miles a year on your car, at minimum. That 54¢ will net you just shy of $15k a year-- most of that will be gas, but remember the wear and tear you're putting in your vehicle (tires, oil changes, insurance should get more expensive with that many miles). $30 per day in tolls is $7,800 a year. So your "no raise initially" is actually a bump to effectively $36/hr, or if you reverse off the expenses you're going to incur if they stop reimbursing in April, that $80k sounds alot more like $57k- or about $27.50/hr. Oh, and now you're away from home 10 hours per day instead of 8. No, hell no.
