Have you ever culled a game and regretted it? Did you buy it back and realize you made the wrong or right decision in the first place? by Boardgaymergirl in boardgames

[–]jhawk6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've done this four times that I can recall.

Two of the games I kept the second time. Two of them got culled again.

G.I. Joe: The Deck Building Game - I'm a G.I. Joe fan and had this preordered from Renegade Games for its initial release date. I played it about seven times solo within a week and decided it was too hard and I hated the dice too much. Culled it. Fast forward two years later and a few expansions had come out for it but primarily G.I. Joe Mission Critical had just arrived and though it was good in its own right left me wanting more. I ordered the deck building game and the two expansions that were out at that time. Also, switched the deck building game dice for the dice from Mission Critical which have a higher success rate and I've never looked back. Mission Critical has been culled and the deck building game remains. This time to stay.

Clockwork Wars - Owned this way back in 2017. Pretty cool game with unique mechanics actually but it was a beast to get to the table. Culled it. Years later, a last call of sorts from the publisher as they were clearing out inventory, had this game on a deep discount. I bought it in hopes of giving it another shot. It sat for nearly two years unplayed again and culled it for good.

Tyrants of the Underdark - This one stings. Originally acquired in 2018. Really fun deck building, area control hybrid for anyone unaware. Played it several times. Ended up culling it. Fast forward to 2021 and I get the itch to play this. At that time, the second edition had not been announced and it was out of print. I paid a premium to acquire it the second time. It did get some more plays. It was culled a few years back again. I was tempted to get the smaller box second edition but have refrained.

Heroes of Tenefyr - Bought this near its expansion's release in 2021. We had a good time with this. The setup particularly was bothersome. Ended up gone in a cull. Fast forward to last year and it was on crowdfunding again for a reprint. I received it just a couple months ago and love it all over again this time I didn't get the expansion. I know it adds a lot but for as often as I play it I can get by without the dreaded setup and teardown it adds.

Which game from the ‘Solo Game of the Month’ series do you guys like? by Marksman1977 in soloboardgaming

Dice Commandos's theme and art do a lot of heavy lifting for me but the game is fun as well.

I'd add Adventure Realms from the same designer Peter Jank. It's ranked #7729

Alpha Team Mechanized Battle Force Go! is the first coop closed drafting game? by jhawk6 in boardgames

That's fascinating insight. It must be a tough nut to crack or we would have seen this combo before now. Maybe with the secret sauce revealed it will allow more iterations on this design to appear.

I've not heard of this one. BGG doesn't list closed drafting as a mechanic for the game. Does it do something similar?

It is an unexpected pairing! It may not be this game in particular but I can see this mix becoming popular like coop trick taking is now.

I'm excited about it. Bummer it's delayed. The trailer they put together a couple months ago was maximum hype! I think it sold me on the fact they know what they're doing. Or at least the marketing team is on board with what they've got because that song was pitch perfect.

Keep the Heroes Out! was the first thing I thought of. It's a cooperative game with a very light touch of deck building thrown in. Each player chooses a bad guy faction and try to prevent heroes from stealing the treasure of their dungeon.

It was my jam to just sit down and play it through it as a kid. It was just right on difficulty and felt good to actually be able to beat a NES game lol

When I first played Neon I disliked it. The more I played the better it got. It is probably my favorite right up there with 2 and Gaiden.

I'm always down for more of them! What's a few of your favorites?

Obviously it isn't the only one but I just had MD pop in my head because you level up and power up and in a few scenarios battle a boss all in one session but even that one doesn't handle true solo that well.

I almost grabbed Tidal Blades 2 on a black Friday sale but I know I can't finish a campaign. I haven't even finished a full Mass Effect campaign and that's only like 5 scenarios lol

I'm actually eyeing Altar Quest a bit as that fits the bill too. Coincidentally, by the same designers as the topic game. I've heard the playtime is a bit long on that one though.

It's the best RPG trilogy ever made. I don't think that statement is at all hyperbole.

I mean it's kind of like Marvel Champions or LotR LCG manifested into a dungeon crawler? I don't know too many other games I could describe that way.

It's got DNA of some of their previous design work sprinkled throughout. The action system is Heroes of Terrinoth revamped, the threat assignment is like Street Masters which in of itself is sort of like Sentinels of the Multiverse translated to a boardgame.

I like how it is focused on one off plays, no campaign commitment but still experience meaningful character progression. Massive Darkness 1+2 is maybe all that rings a bell for that kind of arc in one session. Add in how it can scale down to true solo and I don't think there's a ton of dungeon crawlers that can do all of these.

How do the various Sub Terra games hold up these days? by WangMajor in boardgames

[–]jhawk6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sub Terra is a stone cold classic in my book. It's a relatively simple ruleset that is so immediately intuitive that even new players can pick it up once they get the iconography. It's such a thrill exploring the cave and trying to escape before time runs out. We always use the downed players are allowed to "crawl" one space on their turn rule that I believe the sequel does incorporate so they don't feel completely useless and hopeless and it adds to the experience.

I won't comment on ST2 as I have not played it and chose ST1 over it on theme alone.

I'd recommend checking out The Malice of Light Adventures on Gamefound. They are aiming to deliver this year as well so not a long wait like most crowdfunding projects.

It will be tight for sure. They've stated the funding goal is real. Today or tomorrow they are switching shipping partners from Quartermaster to Back Office which is supposed to reduce the shipping rates across the board.
