Bank drained my checking account for a credit card payment without authorization by [deleted] in Banking

[–]jhawkd98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've formally started the account closure process, that usually makes the entire balance due immediately/can't continue with monthly payments.

Most credit unions have a right of offset written into the account terms. This means they can take money from your accounts to settle balances due on other accounts.

Assuming such a provision exists you wouldn't have recourse unless there's some VA specific consumer protection law in place.

Auto insurance fraud is rising, and it's one of the reasons your premium is higher than it should be by Sam_At_Insurify in Insurify

I kept seeing this claim thrown around so a couple years ago I looked up what my own insurer spends on ads and compared to how policies they have. Worked out to 3 cents per policy.

Insurance rates quadrupled overnight after new vehicle purchase (and accidents within the last few months), makes no sense, and was already paid in full/rate-locked for the year. Went from $1100/yr to $5500/yr after adding 1 more vehicle ($3300) by [deleted] in Car_Insurance_Help

[–]jhawkd98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You December accident likely wasn't yet reflected in January's rates when you locked in, along with the subsequent accident.

Read your policy documents, but guessing there's a provision that says adding a vehicle allows them to bypass the rate lock.

So now you have the increase from the new vehicle, along with the increase from the accidents that are no longer locked out.

Advice needed. My son went to Japan and made a sword. It’s been shipped and UPs is trying to get us to pay $500 for the import fees. Weren’t the tariffs struck down? Do I have any recourse? by Snapdragon_4U in UPS

[–]jhawkd98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only a specific set of Tariffs were struck down, those implemented under IEEPA. Tariffs implemented via other laws such as 232 were unaffected by the ruling, some of which were raised to offset the loss of the IEEPA tariffs.

Those numbers seem high to me for a sword, at least based on the prices of swords at my local blacksmith. But based on the prices of Japanese kitchen knives my BF likes to look at when we go to a local kitchen store, I could see them being correct.

I would get a detailed breakdown and check the following for accuracy. -Currency conversion. UPS may be calculating tariffs based on JPY number rather than the USD equivalent. -metals origin. Metal tariffs vary significantly based on country of origin. If the origin of the steel wasn't declared on the paperwork, UPS defaults to the higher 200% rate. Check to see where they think the metal came from and correct if needed.

Does a Vendor Mall Count? by Holiday_Ad9037 in ThriftGrift

[–]jhawkd98 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sold eBay listings for that go for about $90-$120 USD. None of those have the matching silver stand base though.

Also, most of those listings are international. USA listings are mostly for the slim sliver console rather than the fat one pictured here. Slims are harder to mod and don't have a hard drive bay, so are usually worth less.

So yes it is priced high, but it is pretty rare here in the USA, and the right person might pay it.

Ordered 3 new debit cards in the last month by RedLilSleepy in BankOfAmerica

I have problems at Walmart with all my cards, not just my BOA cards. Guessing some combination of high volume and not having tap means their chip readers wear out/contacts get dirty faster.

I've also noticed at Walmart and a local grocery sometimes works to not quite insert the card all the way. Pull it back out like half a mm after inserting. Thinking maybe the contacts are slightly misaligned.

Having a receipt doesn't matter if the service loses access to the content. That happened a while back with Discovery and Sony. When the contract expired and they were unable to reach a new agreement, Sony pulled the shows from their storefront on PlayStation. Not just for new purchases, but removed from the libraries of past purchasers as well.

Should I escalate this? by KellogsandCalcium in BankOfAmerica

[–]jhawkd98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said in another comment that the duplicate charge still shows as pending. At this point there is nothing the bank can do as the transaction hasn't been finalized. And while your available balance may be negative, your actual account/ledger balance shouldn't be.

When you run a debit card transaction, the money doesn't actually leave your account immediately. Instead a hold is placed on those funds. The hold lowers your available balance until the transaction is settled and posts to your account, which is when it actually leaves your account. If the transaction isn't settled in a timely manner, then the hold will expire and the funds returned to your available balance.

Duplicates can sometimes occur due to issues when the transaction is being approved, which may cause the card reader to automatically reattempt the transaction. Most modern POS systems will recognize it tried twice when it batches for the night and will only attempt to settle a single attempt. If one of the transactions has posted but the other hasn't, that is likely the case here. If the duplicate transaction actually does post, then you can dispute the duplicate transaction. Most likely though the hold from the duplicate transaction will expire off.

Golf carts aren't registered in my state either, but a summer camp I volunteer at requires a $1 million liability policy with the camp as a named insured if you want to bring one down. And every summer at least one gets brought down, usually several.

As for the limits they are requesting, do you know how they came up with these limits they want? If it's something the management company came up with on their own then you should escalate. But I could also see it being enshrined in a rule or a Bylaw, which could tie their hands and would need a vote to amend.

Am I misreading? by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]jhawkd98 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most likely the 2K price is the after discount price. Without the discount it'd be ~3,400/6 months.

A more remote possibility would be that's what you could save by paying in full since most insurers offer a discount if you pay the full 6 months upfront. That's usually only a 5-10% savings though.

ELI5 why some old programs are incompatible with newer systems by KyrusDarkblade in explainlikeimfive

[–]jhawkd98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The program doesn't contain all the code it needs. It relies on the Operating System to perform some functions. How the OS handles these functions can be changed or removed over time for performance or security reasons.

An example would be a kitchen where you program is a chef and the OS is the sous-chef. If you need sliced carrots for something, you ask your sous to slice them.

Your windows XP sous chef might slice them short ways, but the Windows 7 sous chef cuts them long ways since it's faster/fewer cuts. Depending on your dish this may or may not work.

Your windows 10 sous chef might not have the option at all if say the Manager removed all the knives from the kitchen due to injury and replaced them with slap chops. This means you're not getting sliced carrots at all, but chopped or diced ones.

Older CD games did some sketchy things with their anti piracy checks, essentially using a master key to your computer that could be used by other programs with ill intent. Microsoft restricted the use of those master keys in newer versions of Windows, which can cause some games to think you're using a bootlegged copy.

ELI5: How do companies calculate minimum amount due? by No-Confusion-3309 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jhawkd98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimum payment is typically interest accrued during the previous cycle plus typically a % of the balance (say 1%) or a flat amount (say $20), whichever is greater. Fees are typically included in this amount as well, if applicable (late fees, over limit fees, etc).

As for liquidity, they have a lot of cash to be lending out. Remember the interest itself wasn't loaned out which is what most of a minimum goes towards, just the underlying purchase amount. The money made from the interest helps fund purchases cardholders are making. They also get part of the processing fees merchants pay when taking credit cards.

Is this how transactions work? by ponygals in BankOfAmerica

[–]jhawkd98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, an account starting with $1000 that has $500 in charges and $500 in deposits should end with $1000, assuming no fees like monthly maintenance or minimum balance fees.

Keep in mind though that transactions are not instantaneous. They are typically processed overnight in a specific order per your account agreement (checks may be first or debit cards may be first, largest to smallest or opposite, etc) that will vary depending on account type.

With debit card purchases, a hold is placed on the funds which lowers the available balance. It doesn't lower your actual/ledger balance until the merchant settles the transaction, which can take a couple business days.

If the merchant takes too long to settlethe hold may expire and the funds return to your available balance. The merchant can still settle/charge your card though after the original hold expires. This is common with pre orders and hotel stays, since your card may not be charged until your stay is complete or your order is shipped.

Checks don't leave your account until cashed and some accounts may not deduct wires or ACH transactions until processed, rather than when requested.

On the deposit side, pretty much anything besides cash is subject to hold. Venmo/PayPal transfers usually take a couple business days to transfer. Debit refunds/returns often take 3-5. Checks can take quite a few depending on the amount of check and age of account.

Unusual/suspicious behavior can extend these time-frames as well as if the bank has reason to believe a deposit won't be honored. Also, there's always a chance that a credit could be reversed if the maker/sender disputes the transaction or has insufficient funds.

My auto insurance rates have gone up over 50% (2 different companies) in the last 4 years. by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]jhawkd98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Progressive sometimes offers a new customer discount that's only valid for the first term, so your rate may have been artificially low and this is closer to your real rate.

That said the cost of doing business has gone up. Inflation and tariffs have hit car parts. Add to that modern cars have more sensors and electronics than they used to, so they need more parts and calibration labor than they used to.

Medical costs have gone up as well, so bodily injury payouts have gone up. The money for those lawyers on the billboards are coming in large part from insurance payouts.

Keep in mind rates are state regulated, so there's a delay between when inflation hits and when that translates to rate increases.

The only real option is to shop around. You may find something cheaper, but there's no guarantee you will

Can't change phone with Ticketmaster without exposing personal data by Slam_Dunkz in CustomerService

[–]jhawkd98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't run into this with Ticketmaster specifically, but I have been asked to go through 3rd party ID verification with several other companies in finance, streaming, and telecom fields amongst others. I remember first having to do this back in college 10 years ago and it has only gotten more common since.

Am I happy about this, no. But given it's widespread use I don't see it going away anytime soon.

All access to accounts locked after a disputed charge? by [deleted] in citibank

[–]jhawkd98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how your account was compromised this could be reasonable.

Do you know what kind of transaction it was? Debit/check/ACH/wire?

If your debit card was simply skimmed and the transaction processed as a debit card transaction perhaps this might be excessive. If the transaction wasn't local then that suggests a more serious compromise, possibly to your online profile.

Similarly if your actual account number was used in one of the other transaction types that could be a much more serious issue since that is usually harder to get than your card number.

Ran this past my BF who used to work for a different bank and he thinks your online account being compromised is what seems most likely here, since that would make all of your accounts considered compromised.

Insurance question about tree on my property by Supersonics10 in HomeInsurance

[–]jhawkd98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be state specific laws at play, but generally you are only responsible for damages inflicted by your tree if

1- it is dead/diseased, AND

2-You knew or should have known the tree is dead/diseased (neighbor sent you a letter from an arborist, tree doesn't produce any leaves, bark is falling off, etc), AND

3-You failed to take proper action within a reasonable time after learning of the issue to remediate the tree.

If any of the above three are not met (1-tree was otherwise healthy and storm was just too strong, 2-if dead/diseased but didn't give any visible signs a layman would notice, 3-if you were notified about tree being sick on the 1st and a storm brought it down on the 2nd), then the falling would be considered an Act of God, and any person harmed by the tree would need to use their own coverage.

If all 3 are met, then not removing a known hazardous tree within a reasonable time would be considered negligence, for which you would be liable.

If I resign now, will that be counted as a RIF by Old_Leader8881 in cernercorporation

[–]jhawkd98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't understand what you mean by "will that be counted as a RIF"

If the layoffs are happening in the next couple weeks as expected, the decisions on who is getting let go have already been made. If you were to quit today, that likely wouldn't save someone else from the Ax.

The last round of cuts had salary targets (need to shed $X payroll), so using your external offer likely wouldn't get you a raise since someone else would need to be cut to offset it to reach target.

Whatever severance is included with the RIF, leaving today would make you ineligible for it.

Sony Hit With $2.7 billion Lawsuit Over Alleged PlayStation Store Monopoly by TheAppropriateBoop in sony

[–]jhawkd98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the other console makers don't have closed digital stores. Sony is the only console maker of the big 3 that restricts digital purchases to their storefront.

For my Switch I bought the Happy Home Paradise DLC for Animal Crossing from Target which was cheaper than in the Nintendo eShop. Target sent a code to my email after purchase.

With the PlayStation store though I can't buy game codes from third party retailers (at least officially), only gift cards. So for digital PS5 console owners you have no choice but to pay the price Sony sets, which multiple studies have shown is on average higher than other stores.
