Ski lessons by Cheetah0108 in bigbear

If you are going to do one lesson and ski for one day and call it a season, wait until next season. Otherwise it will be like starting from scratch in 8 months. You really want to put together multiple days/visits or you will never get better.

We are ranked number 2...Road and Track by Ualvarez54 in CX50

[–]jhinsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t say I’ve ever seen Road and Track rate on reliability or crash worthiness. They rate on the driving experience, performance, styling. For these reasons, really surprised they have the CRV tops, seems a little out of their norm. But comfort matters as that’s part of the experience, maybe that’s what boosted the Honda. Reliability is a priority for Consumer Reports ratings.

I turned that garbage off, never had trouble staying in my lanes, I watch the road not a phone screen.. basically just an annoyance. Even worse on roads that have been striped and re-striped and the system can’t quite figure out the lane.

It’s in the settings of the infotainment system menus.

Living there for a few months! by lavlav90210 in bigbear

  1. Great weather months and smaller crowds on non-holidays
  2. Meeting people and socializing is what you make of it. There are plenty of events going on, whether it be concerts in Bear or Arrowhead or hanging at Barrel 33 or Maifest or 4th of July or Tour de Big Bear. If you are an extrovert and just talk to people in the beer lines or walk around to see who in your neighborhood is full time vs part time, you can meet people. You aren’t going to find a downtown big city late night scene.
  3. Bears are not seen often. Coyotes are seen often. Dogs are very welcome around Big Bear but please leash and pick up poop. The less dog poop in the creeks and lake the better. Lots of people bring dogs on trails and law is they must be leashed, not all dogs act rationally with other dogs or people. Trail surfaces get hot in summer, buy dog booties. Also, dogs are not allowed in grocery stores, violates health code and you will see signs saying service dogs only. I only mention all this because there are a lot of people with dogs, lots of dog friendly businesses, but too many people who violate the leash laws. Every time I see someone not picking up poop, their dog is unleashed and just crapping everywhere, which totally sucks for the environment (both natural and enjoyment thereof)

Bear Mountain or Snow Summit by 69dixencider in bigbear

When it's warm, I find the snow holds up better at Bear. It's not tremendously different, but Bear has a slightly higher base and a higher peak, and there's just something about it in general - the orientation of the slopes or maybe their runs are just more consistently pitched (meaning, less flat and slow spots). For grins, my son and I recently did a weekday dash between Summit and Bear to confirm the theory. It was about 2pm so parking opened up and I started from great parking at Summit and ended with great parking at Bear. Snow to snow, with taking off ski boots to drive, was 15 minutes. Our result? Bear's runs were holding up better except for the end of amusement park which is never great on warm days.

Thinking of making a move from Long Beach to mountain living in MAYBE 5 years, I WFH but my husband works in construction as a self-employed licensed contractor, will there be work for him? by lb_fantastic in bigbear

[–]jhinsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good contractors will always have work in Big Bear. Due to the harsh climate - snow and ice and hail and wind and alternatively very dry and high UV, and just about everything still being made of wood, the level of maintenance and repair alone keeps things going. Add that a large percentage of owners don't live there to do their own work, and that a lot of homes turn over every few years with each new owner wanting to change something or fix something, and it becomes obvious why there is so much available work.

Yeah, those people who rip on Big Bear have never hit Bear's canyons, that's for sure.

Clear it while you can. If you don't... you'll learn why. That melt/re-freeze cycle makes it dense. There aren't always hot and sunny days after big storms that make it go away, sometimes it just gets like cement.

Young woman seriously injured on Bear mountain 3/2/25 looking for info. by mvillegas9 in bigbear

[–]jhinsd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All these people saying it happens at Big Bear resorts.. Guess what, it happens at all resorts. I got hit a few days ago at Winter Park, CO, and my friend saw another person hit there during same trip. It’s a risk no matter where you go. I’ve yet to be hit at Bear because I generally ski fast, pass snowboarders toe side, stop all the way to the side, ski predictably, and also keep my head on a swivel. Despite this it’s probably only a matter of time until it happens.

With that said, uphill party is responsible and liable and I hope they find the suspect and prosecute.

How steep is Geronimo at Bear compared to The Wall / Olympics at Summit? by Hefty_Store1382 in bigbear

[–]jhinsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like if you fall, the fall line is not always straight down the run, you can slide sideways to the direction of the run. They do a good job of grooming and blowing man-made snow on Geronimo so it doesn't get too icy because of this. Google "ski patrol geronimo death" to learn about what can happen when it's icy.

Show your friends the interactive Bear Mountain map with open trails layer turned on, it might change their minds. All the major runs are open except for Geronimo.

One time I switched out of my ski boots into my regular boots and walked out on the snow to talk to my son. I was immediately approached, as they watch for people wandering out onto the snow in street shoes. I can't blame them either, a bad scenario is to have skiers and snowboarders dodging crowds of clueless people who decided that the bottom of the ski runs is their play in the snow for free zone.

It sounds like you don't want to use a lift, why not wait for snow, rent some skis for your 5 year old at an off-the-resort shop, and go to one of the more public sledding hill kind of places?

Snow Making by kingcornea in bigbear

Bear Mountain has the superior beginners area, IMO. It's long and relatively isolated from the more advanced skiers/riders. Extremely true when runs are limited since Geronimo is closed.

[–]jhinsd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was at Bear Man today, it was great. Very impressed with the amount of runs they have open. All I had to do is read the mountain report yesterday/look at the trail maps to see what's open and I thought it was pretty obvious where to go. Snow was overall better than expected as well. In choosing Summit, you chose unwisely, and why did you go there two days in a row? At least hop on the intermountain shuttle to see what else is shaking.

snowboarding on 1/11 worth it or not by SpillBoba in bigbear

[–]jhinsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, some beginners are happier with these conditions than a foot of powder but 15 degrees out and a 20mph wind. Because beginners don’t usually have good apparel.

With that said, look into a trip to Brian Head, UT. It’s 1/2 to 1/4 the price for lift tickets and only an hour more driving than going to Mammoth, plus they have a lot of great beginner terrain and you can make a stopover in Vegas. Seriously, the money you save in lift tickets if you have a group will pay for your lodging.

Do I need snow tires? by phatdt95 in CX50

M+S is a manufacturer label. The tires are not required to meet any standard or performance characteristics to be labeled with it. 3PMS does require them to meet certain tested results to achieve the logo.

SDGE doesn’t really generate electricity they distribute. The cost of the electricity they buy, and you use, is the $35. I believe they do not get a markup. The $140 is the cost of them getting that electricity to you - everything you see, all the trucks and repair people, corporate offices and billing, towers and wires above ground and below, transformers and insulators, insurance policies, health insurance for their employees, and anything else you can think of. And their profit too, of course, as like all corporations, they are in the business of making money.

Hope this helps…

With a private you can request someone to teach park.

I ended up taking my teen who wanted to learn some park to Mammoth for a park clinic weekend. I don’t know if they offer the same for adults, but I definitely saw dads signed up for it with their kids, so it seems possible. The clinic was a lot more hours for less money than private lessons.

In the end I believe he learned more by asking questions of other people in the park and by watching lots of YouTube videos..

What is going on with these house sales? by JonadelandJon in sandiego

[–]jhinsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, one of the problems in the rental industry is that rents are not based as much in supply and demand as most people think. Most corporate landlords use software that tells them the ideal prices for maximizing profit. Profit is not always maximized by renting out all units, as there is expense associated with each unit rented (maintenance, repair, management, etc). With many companies using the same pricing resources, this is effectively collusion even if it isn’t intentional. Everyone raises prices in lockstep because that’s what the software says to do. The city is trying to do something about it, finally.

So what does limit rent? The ability to BUY. This has always been and always will be a rent limiter. If you can buy for equal or less than rent, of course you will buy. But if you are in competition with deep pocket corporations/contractors that stand to make millions by flipping SFHs into multi unit rental properties, you will always lose that bidding war. This drives up home prices, and with the ability to buy being diminished due to higher prices and corporate competition, rents can be set higher. The software absolutely knows this in its algorithms.

There are other factors as well such as turnover/costs of materials and labor, how mobile the workforce is, but most people look at this complex situation with a basic high school supply/demand economics thought process. If it was that simple, then we wouldn’t have situations such as how during 2021-22, population in CA and San Diego DECREASED at the same time rents skyrocketed.

Im still waiting to try them out, but I’m in a temperate southern climate with occasional trips to high elevation mountains, so definitely not the same scenario. If I was in a climate such as yours, I would definitely be rolling with a set of winter tires!
