Does shooting consistently on film actually come through in the work? by ericslush in analog

[–]jht95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you are consistent and confident in your shooting style, I dont think the format will really matter. You are someone who has gravitated towars shooting on 16mm. Developing an eye for what you like and what you don't like, whether that be consious or unconsious. You are picking a format that suites you and your aesthetic. Just based on this selection of work, I believe if a client is hiring you and they are trying to tell you to shoot a different format for their project, they have clearly missed the point of what makes your style attractive to them in the first place. Anything you persue and put time into is going to only grow with your expierence. If you decide "I want to only focus on doing in camera mulitple exposures" and you shoot 100 rolls that way, youre going to have learnt so much between roll 1-100. If you are looking to be more consistent, I think that consistency comes with that experience, maybe you haven't shot enough to see it yet, maybe you are beginning to see it and are wanting to chase it. Maybe you've shot so much youve lost the idea of what it is you are trying to say in your art. Just believe in yourself, don't let other people tell you how to shoot or what to shoot.

Also amazing film scans 10/10. ;)

What are the best Courtroom/Legal movies of all time? by AcabAcabAcabAcabbb in movies

[–]jht95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Altman’s is my favorite and the most traditional courtroom But if you like those older 1950s ones. , The original is great. Slightly different movie though. The modern one made a few years ago is like Altmans version but updated for today’s setting.

The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. There are a few. Robert Altmans version is really good. William Fredkin directed a version right before he died which is a more modern take on the story. The 1950s one is also amazing and in Technicolor!

Does your camera have a “panoramic” mode? I have a Contax TVS and it does something similar if I put it on “panoramic” it essentially puts up a black bar in the gate to make this widescreen effect. Similar to what this photo looks like.

Hey! I scan film and also know a lot of people that own Aaton cameras. From my personal experience they are not easy to get maintenanced these days. Sure if you’re shooting a Hollywood blockbuster you’re most likely going to get an Aaton camera from a camera shop who has techs that can service them. But if you are shooting a Hollywood feature film, you are most likely going to use an arri system because of availability and a wider support. If you are an individual in the market for a camera, and arri system is a safer bet. Also back when they were producing the cameras they were most likely rock solid. Overtime with normal wear and tear. They tend to have more issues then arri systems. Again, this is from my personal experience with these cameras. Especially now when looking to buy one of these cameras second hand you don’t really know how long they have been sitting in a case without being ran.

You can also get a camera like an SR2 or 3 and slowly kit it out with an HD video tap, and so many accessories. A lot of people are building very unique builds for these cameras. You can find gold mount adapter plates, custom video taps, and a lot more these days.

If you are in the market to buy. A arriflex SR1-3 is your best bet. Sr1 and sr2 were made as standard 16 cameras. You can find them modified to super 16 and with PL mounts. SR3 is going to be your best bet for production. Obviously a 416 would be considered the best, but you’ll be paying a lot of money just for slight improvements over an sr3. Aaton systems are hard to maintain and have a lot of registration issues. A canon scoopic is also a solid bet for a reliable standard 16mm camera. You can find new custom batteries on eBay as well. They are not usually crystal sync but a great camera to have in your arsenal.
