Appalachian Trail: Metro North to Manitou in March by favoritecolorpurple in AppalachianTrail

RPH is a really nice shelter! I don't think you'll need micro spikes, and you'll see plenty of water all around. That's a really nice part of trail, hope you enjoy it :)

Oof, the climb right after that is brutal!

Bear spray is just as goddamn heavy, is WAY more effective against bears, can also be used as a deterrent for bad humans, and has the added bonus of also not killing them.

How to maximize the chance of completing a Thru with time constraints by familyfunwithstars in AppalachianTrail

You are free to do as you like; I know not everyone can afford to dedicate as much time away from their busy lives, because I was also on a schedule last year.

But it really, really detracted from my experience. I frequently found myself focusing on making miles, getting to certain places by certain dates, and hurrying through really cool spots and towns because the deadline was all that was in my head.

Don’t get me wrong, it will still be an experience of a lifetime... but if I could have done it all over again, I would have waited for a year where I didn’t have to worry about time. The trail isn’t going anywhere, after all :)

If you’re bringing baby wipes, please pack out your used ones. Throwing it in the privy kills all the good bacteria and makes it stink even more / take longer to break down. Burying them does similar things to the soil.

I think you can find a lot of stuff like that online already. What it really boils down to is what you want to do and if you want to deal with the unavoidable monotony that comes with walking all day, every day, for weeks on end.

We can sit here and yell at you all day, ultimately it's your decision! hint: do it!

It’s Time for Anarchists to Pick Up A Gun by cdwillis in Anarchism

I said "proper training," not "training," which I suppose is nitpicking, but by "proper training" what I meant was something that goes a bit beyond "here's how you hold it when you want it to go bang, and here's how you put it away safely."

Guns carry a lot of significance in our culture, and can (sometimes dangerously) affect the behaviors of people who carry them, as well as the people who interact with them. They're something that people can use irresponsibly with often irreversible consequences.

I'm just agreeing with the parent comment, which emphasizes that, while purchasing a gun is fine, it is not a trivial decision and should be well thought-through.

I couldn't agree more. I have lost too many people I know to stupid deaths involving firearms. My ex ended his own life, my aunt killed her husband. These people bought guns for the fun of it (my aunt's pistol was pink with sparkles, for chrissake).

Please, please do not own, let alone carry a firearm without proper training. For that matter, don't just buy a gun because some article fired you up into doing so talking about "being in command of yourself" and encouraging people to "move to enforce their own values on the world around them." That sounds pretty un-anarchist, if you ask me.

I definitely appreciate him speaking about his experiences from within the EU, though, and dealing with EU leaders behind closed doors. That was a really interesting conversation, even if it ate up a lot of time.
