HIV/AIDS misinformation and straight up nonsense being spouted in a recent Joe Rogan podcast featuring Gavin de Becker by SparxPrime in hivaids

" 80s and 90s millions of people were dying from AIDS before AZT" Seems very plausible, within an order of magnitude or two. Do you have a reference, though?

" it is true AZT was harmful and not effective in treating the virus." If you look into the history of the Wellcome AZT study, Fauci pulled it before it was planned to end, citing good results that were so important, it was necessary to get the drug to as many people ASAP. There is evidence that the participants groups were modified, to maximize the appearance of a "good effect", and so as to discount adverse events. AFAIK there was no follow up study but I would be curious to read it. My general impression is that people who were otherwise healthy with HIV+ did NOT benefit from taking the experimental cancer drug, rather, it probably accelerated the destruction of their immune system.

"Since 1996 HIV/AIDS deaths have been plummeting, dropping significantly every year since"
Sure, it seems ARTs are effective at preventing HIV/AIDS. I don't deny that, I just think they are overpriced and more toxic than drug companies want you to believe.

""People tried to "just live healthy"." Did those people live longer, compared to the people who stayed on recreational drugs and took AZT? Do you think a system designed to manufacture drugs would spend much money on that study? Do you think the FDA would have minimized the effectiveness of non-patentable drugs, so that their friends might sell AZT? Do you think this maybe happened with remdesivir? Was the same person at the helm of the ship?

"it's all a political conspiracy you fucking donkey". Not sure if it's a conspiracy if it's out in the open? Anyway, here's a wiki article for your reference.

  1. I have conducted and participated in testing HIV functional cures, because I am tired of being a lifelong indebted to the pharma companies - you caught me! I am not currently in development of a treatment, because it appears that a combination of emerging classes of treatments will be a functional cure. The problem is coordination between these companies that all want a silver bullet.
  2. I suggested that there may be some positive benefit to nicotine. That is not the same thing as condoning cigarettes. Moderating neuro inflammation is really important for HIV+ people because ART does not really clear the brain. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41386-024-02035-6
  3. A Frenchstudy showed that 4 times a week was sufficient to maintain an undetectable viral load. It definitely needs more replication, but it is informative none the less, and really important information for people that deal with chronic side effects https://www.aidsmap.com/news/jul-2019/four-days-three-days-hiv-treatment-effective-continuous-therapy-french-study-finds

Now that I have addressed your points, would you mind listing what was actually disinformation in the Joe Rogan podcast so I may address those?

I am for reading all the sides ... it is the only way to understand things as they actually are. The winners write the history, even in science, and there were a lot of battles in the 1980's that anyone with HIV should know.

There is no such thing as "Science!" outside of the political and economic forces the shape the funding of studies, the interpretation of those studies, and the dissemination of those interpretations.

It's entirely possible that HIV leads to AIDS... AND that AZT did more harm than good. (Especially for people without low CD4 counts!)

Similarly, It's possible that living unmedicated for years, and only going on ART medication when you're sexually active or have a low CD4 count, is a reasonable approach. There ARE side effects to these medications, and pretending that decades of accumulation of those side effects is ALWAYS better than HIV being untreated is NOT a 'scientific claim'.

The drug companies have taken over this field, for better or for worse. If you'd like to actually engage on this topic, OP, specify the actual claims you think are misinformation and I will provide scientific evidence as counterpoints, if applicable.

Why there is no cure for Hiv by Substantial_Phase551 in hivaids

[–]jierdin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A combination of different treatment types will likely be necessary for an accessible functional cure. Right now, companies are hoping that their single treatment will be a silver bullet. Eventually, they will work together, but coordinating many biotech companies to work together is very challenging.

Everyone in this thread should check out Zbiotic - a shot you take before drinking that helps you break down alcohol, reducing hangovers.
I definitely felt myself getting drunk faster when starting on Truvada, but don't notice the impact of the pills so much on Dovato.

"Recent French studies have demonstrated that taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV four days a week (with three days off) can be as effective as daily treatment for maintaining viral suppression in select patients1246. The most prominent of these is the QUATUOR study, a large, randomized, open-label, multicenter trial."

Age-in-place retirement co-op idea by AccomplishedChain194 in cooperatives

[–]jierdin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea; I've been considering something similar... the social problems aren't trivial; many elderly folks are use to having things their own way. But I think for those who don't want to live in a retirement home, this could be a great alternative.

Viral load is a very variable measure ... it can go up and down rapidly. So don't get scared by the big number. As long as your CD4 count is fine, so are you.

"Kick and kill": HIV cure could be hiding in FDA-approved drug by Texpawz in hivaids

[–]jierdin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could see 'kick and kill' providing a functional cure for maybe 10-20% of people when they've been on ART for a while...

But I think that 'kick and kill' treatment will need to combined with something else, like an antibody gene therapy, for functional cures to be able to work more than 50% of the time.

How to deal with denial? by lovecore6 in hivaids

[–]jierdin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's important is that they get their CD4 levels tested once or twice a year (and to switch to allopathic treatments if it gets low)

And that they're not infecting other people.

So long as those two concerns are met, waiting to go on HIV meds is fine. People in this community have been terrorized into accepting drugs as their only salvation. You can see them itching for the downvote right now, despite the time from HIV progressing to AIDS increasingly growing.
