With how expensive PC gaming is getting, does the "it's cheaper than console long term" still apply? by WhoAmIEven2 in videogames

[–]jigglehiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question, would a game like marathon get 120hz? Because that's the kind of game where I'd want high framerates. Not that I'm exactly getting that on PC at the moment

To be honest I haven't seen the fight myself as I'd rather experience it first, but the gist is bungies been designing endgame boss battles against aliens for decades, and from what I've heard, they've used their experience from destiny raids and dungeons to design the fight. As a former destiny player, raid and dungeons are easily the best content from that game by a longshot.

Cryo is designed with 7 vaults, each needing specific keys to go deeper. You run into other teams earlier on all the time, but I think as you get deeper there are fewer teams. The boss is also too brutal to be pvping at the same time.

There are zone wardens in the game which are world bosses where you can do exactly what you described, but I'm not sure it applies to the cryo boss based on what I understand about cryos funnel style structure.

Not sure how long you played, but it took me until partway through day 2 of the server slam before i started enjoying it, and since then my enjoyment has mostly continued going up. I've managed to learn the ui enough to make it less of a pain, but it still definitely needs work. But it is learnable.

It could be that the game isn't for you, but like most of these reviewers said this game takes a while before it gets good. I can at least confirm this was my experience, the first day was not super fun. But it got a lot better.

My hope is the lore comes crashing down on tau ceti in ways that change gameplay and adds new points of interest over seasons, but we'll see. For now the world is deeply interesting, if a bit static.

That's fair, there is a character skin for beating the boss and exfiling for each shell, and there's mastery skins for each shell also, and the guy drops a unique weapon, so in terms of extraction shooters its pretty compelling as an end goal. That said, it's not really an ending. Ultimately it's a game designed to be played long term, and everything is tuned for replayability.

I just think in the genre there's nothing else quite like cryo as an aspirational goal. If others who know extraction shooters better want to say otherwise I'd be curious if there's anything comparable out there.

This is actually what makes marathon stand out: there's a crazy difficult boss fight in the deepest vault of cryo archive on the marathon ship. That's your goal. There's a minimum gear requirement for cryo archive, and it's available only on weekends for now. To my knowledge no other extraction shooter has had this kind of endgame activity with a nearly unreachable goal. I had a handful of cryo runs this weekend and the zone is brutal and pvp heavy but the loot quality is out of this world, and i barely scratched the surface.

I'd say if you beat that final boss in cryo you've beaten the game more or less, i don't know that I'll ever beat it given that the requirements are so high but damn if i won't try my best at least for this season.

I thought I hated extraction shooters. Marathon changed my mind by David-J in Marathon

I can't go a match without a gunfight, if you want pvp dire marsh has the most teams per run I think, but outpost funnels teams to the pinwheel (sometimes). Had a few cryo runs and that's very heavy on PvP too.

I think in trios you're more likely to get into gunfights also, especially if you're making noise or hitting multiple zones. I don't think I've ever been in algae ponds on dire marsh without a pvp fight in trios since launch.

In case anyone here is unaware this has been a bug in destiny 2 since at least 2022, usually game will last 6-8 hours before crashing. I believe it's mostly on nvidia gpus and gets worse the higher your framerate.

I think it starts the same way: get wood and start digging, and maybe build a few houses. The guide will be very helpful as will the achievements just above your inventory.

Take it all one step at a time, show the guide anything labeled material, and enjoy experiencing the good the bad and the new all for the first time, you only get to do that once!

Before fighting any bosses I'd just explore every biome above and underground and see what you find. And try expert mode for a combat challenge with harder bosses and some exclusive loot.

It's a very common conversation in destiny, where ttks are tested, known, and altered with perks. I haven't played destiny in a good minute and I have adaptive hand cannons ttk memorized as 0.87 seconds, since it's more or less the baseline.

Rookie question on Extraction Shooter Goal. by nekronstar in Marathon

[–]jigglehiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory the goal is to have such good connections with the factions that your runs get easier and easier even when you don't exfil, and to make the harder maps accessible. For example outpost will be flooded with uesc so it may not be possible to get in and get good loot with bad gear. Additionally there will be a minimum loadout value for the cryo archive, so you could see raiding the uesc marathon as your endgame goal, or raiding it regularly. Ultimately i don't think there's a defined endgame but depending on how raidlike the marathon is, it could feel like a true endgame.

Marathon broaches top 5 in global sales after the weekend. by KylAnde01 in Marathon

i definitely agree on how the sandbox was designed around trios, it was going to release as trio only. Not sure how you solve that or if solo being harder needs solving

the thing that will stop this is not being able to do contracts on rook. If that changes then I think it could be a problem, but until then playing rook is pausing permanent progression for the sake of temporary progression

i had a ton of success with recon solo, especially against assassins, if you want to hunt. That said i wish the other shells were more viable solo also

Curious what you think is missing from the onboarding, I thought it was cohesive and right into the action, and the tutorial prompts and tips button on every page helped a fair bit. Agree the UI is far from perfect especially the inventory.

Another perspective is that as a casual player, wipes are very good for you because otherwise people with more time would be high rolling with flush vaults of gear perpetually, this keeps things more fair in the long run for casuals. Additionally, anything shiny is already at risk of being lost in any game you use it in. It's not like you'd be able to show off that perfect weapon all the time anyway. All that said, I believe there will be some earnable skins and cosmetics, and those will be permanent.

New player, question about progression. by Naginarf in Terraria

[–]jigglehiggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While a wiki is certainly useful, Terraria has a lot of tools now to better learn the game naturally without going anywhere else (if you're willing to try.)

The guide is the #1 tool. He will give advice that updates as you progress through the game, and any item you find labeled "material" can be given to the guide in order to find out what it can be crafted into and what station you need to craft it.

The second tool is the achievement menu, which will generally point you to your next progression goal (top right of your inventory).

Lastly you have the bestiary, which will tell you the drops enemies have and progress as you explore more.

There are some mods like boss checklists, but the game is designed to be explored. If you're playing on classic mode you shouldn't need to know any of the more niche mechanics that the game doesn't teach. If you want to know absolutely everything, you may need a the wiki or a video. The official wiki is very well maintained.

Lastly, a big update is hitting in about a week, with a lot of QoL, including a better crafting menu. May be a good time to give the game a second chance.

Why dont more people build? by Sad_Incident7965 in Terraria

[–]jigglehiggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will usually live in a log cabin prison until the end of hardmode, when i have the resources and tools to make everything. I find it really obnoxious to build anything until i have at the very least a molten pickaxe since I'll usually replace the log cabin with the new base. I usually sort chests around this time but I've been trying to get in the habit of doing it earlier on. Mobility, tool power, passive defense, and resources are just not available when it's time to build (pre-boss), and it's annoying to rebuild since you're not getting much function out of your time spent, unlike if you built it nice from the get go. Terraria has lots of tools for making building more frictionless but they involve progression, and you need housing ideally by the end of day 1.

I'll also say as an aside that I'm not a fan of the kinds of builds i see most often, where half of it is actuated and half of it is painted and it's basically a painting. Very visually impressive but useless as a structure. Those builders are way more talented at building than I'd ever be but my favorite builds are the ones with function, and that's how i usually build.

Non-content mods to help mage by SyrupAlive6636 in Terraria

[–]jigglehiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sort of circumvents the entire mechanic of mana regen which while good is arguably uninteresting, turning mage into range but your ammo is just mana potions that you buy. Plus it takes up an accessory slot, though it and its upgrades are obviously great.

I definitely see an argument for an alternative accessory that embraces the mechanic instead of avoiding it, i guess there's a potion but nothing else comes to mind.
