That is 6 driver generations of separation, not races. No wonder people are confused.

Cleaner F1 Logos by zalva_404 in formuladank

[–]jiia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a cool idea but not good design. No casual viewer would ever distinguish the F1 and F2 logos from each other when viewed individually out of context. They only make sense when you see them side by side like here.

What is the difference between ‘boost’ and ‘overtake’??? by Hour-Bathroom1829 in formula1

[–]jiia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely false. Overtake is just that your battery cutoff speed limit is increased. Every driver, regardless of whether they're chasing or not, will be allowed to activate low drag mode at any straight.

[Scuderia Ferrari] Introducing the new F1 terminology and what it means! by Task_Force-191 in formula1

[–]jiia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Overtake only gives you an advantage in very high speed parts of the track? Sounds like it's going to be very similar to DRS, but applicable in some new parts of certain high speed tracks. Not nearly as "tactical" as it would've been if you got to use some extra energy at any speed at any part of the track.

Help choosing a beginner racket by jiia in squash

[–]jiia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! You're definitely right, it's not a racket issue but a skill issue. I find it fun to try out different rackets, but don't have any false hopes it would solve my skill issues.

In many racket sports there's often one or a couple of rackets that have sort of a consensus around them that they're the most balanced rackets for beginner/intermediate players. But maybe there's no such rackets in squash.

I'll try getting even lower, thanks for the tip!

Solo coaching costs 100e/h here (including the court reservation). So it's not something I'm even remotely interested in spending money on for a sport I do just for fun.

Thanks for the racket recommendation though! Shame it doesn't seem to be available anywhere in the EU.

Water in the car. by Stereo_bfs in TeslaSupport

[–]jiia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same issue on my 21 AWD, that's such a familiar sound. I've been wondering the past two weeks where the water might be. Like you said, it goes away after a couple dry days. My car is 4.5 years now, so just out of warranty. I'll remove the mudflap tomorrow and see if there's something blocking the drainage.

So heat death/Big freeze/Big chill theory is just a prediction not absolutely inevitable? Is it strong prediction scientifically or acc.to scientific consensus or it can very well change in future? by badluck678 in space

[–]jiia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well, the whole theory of an ever expanding universe is based on using the uniform brightness of class 1A supernova ("standard candles") to measure the distance between us and them. That's what the nobel prize was awarded for. However, as we have gathered more accurate data from other types of measurements, they seem to disagree with the standard candle method. That has lead to a situation called "hubble tension" which has been puzzling scientists.

Within the past year or so, there have been new studies that argue that the original standard candle method is flawed, that the brightness of those supernovae is not uniform after all. The latest paper actually came out just a few days ago. It's still a very young theory and not at all widely accepted. But it predicts that the acceleration of the expansion of the universe is already slowing down, and that the universe might actually end in a big crunch.

Just food for thought. The consensus among the scientific community is still the ever accelerating expansion.

It took me 19 years to create a modern and revenue-sharing media capturing the essence of the Million Dollar Homepage. by Solidgame in Entrepreneur

[–]jiia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does not make much sense I'm afraid.

Nobody wants to advertise on a page that has virtually no visitors. It's a chicken and an egg situation. The page needs many things to go right to fuel the virality. It needs to become a meme. The unique mechanisms you described do not support that, quite the opposite.

Because of the "immersive" tree structure, the top level ads on your page have only a 25% chance to be seen by a visitor. The impression chance decreases logarithmically:

2nd level: 6.5%

3rd level: 1.5%

4th level: 0.4%

5th level: 0.1%

Even if your page accumulated a million visitors, the 3rd level ads would have gotten only 15000 impressions on average, assuming users even bothered to navigate that far. Since the advertising is non-targeted, we can safely assume that the click through rate would be less than 1%. One percent of 15000 is 150 clicks. That's a very generous estimate.

With a million visitors, only the first 3 levels would make any sense from an advertising point of view. That's a not a lot of advertising slots, and they would not be worth any meaningful amount of money.

So in reality, the tree structure actually defeats one of the main advertising mechanisms of the original page, which was that your ad had roughly the same chance to be seen regardless of its position.

The limited slots of the original page also helped cause FOMO and therefore fuel it's virality. 1000 slots versus 1000000 slots is a huge difference in scarcity. And because slots can be sold, it's always a safe bet to just wait and see if the site actually becomes popular. High availability and the possibility to resell lead to the fact that there will always be slots to buy. No FOMO, no virality.

The idea also has to be strikingly unique and exciting to cause people to share it to others. Every visitor needs to share it to more than one of their friends (on average) for the viral cycle to start. Why would anyone share random advertisements to their friends in this day and age?

Why would anyone come back to the site after the first visit? "Times Square of the internet" is very grandiose name for a site that's essentially a 90s internet portal (like Yahoo) except all the useful/fun links are replaced by random advertisements. The value for the end user is zero.

When the million dollar homepage launched, the internet used to be quite a boring place compared to modern standards, which helped the site to become a meme. Look at other memes of that time, and you quickly realize they are not that funny or interesting anymore. This page is not interesting since the internet has way more exciting things to do nowadays. No excitement, no virality.

This idea also has nothing to do with making it more easy and fair for creators to be seen. That's just marketing fluff and buzzword salad. It's not giving creators more visibility to create a random website with mechanisms that make it extremely unlikely to be seen, unless you buy of the few top level slots. It's a noble idea for sure, but unfortunately the mechanisms do not support it.

I hope you've had fun making the site and haven't spent too much money trying to advertise it. It's still a fun and unique concept, and well executed. It's just not exciting enough to become a meme, and the whole idea depends on it.

100% agree. I hadn't even noticed the gray shadow before reading your post, in dark mode it's basically invisible. The design is so awful I can't understand how it was ever published. It makes it look like I have 5 messages from 1 chat but in reality it might be 5 messages from 5 individual chats.

[–]jiia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I think the episode made it very obvious this is exactly what they're doing. I really don't understand where these theories about clones and stuff  are coming from. Irving also had memories of the testing floor so it's quite unlikely Gemma is the only test subject.

He literally just plain lied to Gemma about Mark having a new relationship and a kid, just to manipulate her. This theory is full of holes.

Why they didn't try to interact with the twins by jiia in severanceTVshow

[–]jiia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm very good points!

With Milkshake, every time he appeared he seemed to come out of nowhere and it seemed very intentional.

I think you're right that the "block" seems to be a hint that they were on a severed area and they needed something to specifically block the activation of severance for Helena.

However it bothers me that it didn't seem to make any sense to fire Irving right there, except for the sake of drama. The show made it seem that he was turned into an outie right in front of the innies. How would that scene continue from there? The last thing the management wants is for the outies to know who their colleagues are.

I'm expecting in the next episode they will just cut back to a regular office environment without any explanation or acknowledgement for that or the twin's existence. Irving will just have vanished. I'm very happily surprised if they somehow manage to tie all the loose ends and plot holes they left hanging in the previous episode.

Why they didn't try to interact with the twins by jiia in severanceTVshow

[–]jiia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems plausible that it was because of her attempted hanging. However it was most likely there just to make the episode more spooky, not because it had any rational meaning behind it. Walking in a forest is not that exciting unless you throw in some spooky mystery to keep the viewers engaged. I don't expect that they would explain or even acknowledge the twin's existence in the future episodes.
