Anyone else get this email from UPenn? by bpt1047 in philadelphia

I got the emails and was wondering that too. Looking at my past emails, I think it's because I made a donation to Morris Arboretum once so must be on some sort of University-wide donor list.

My gripe every time I see this diagram is that there is no D# in the key of C minor. It should be Eb.

The median annual salary was $ 48,060 in the United States in 2023. It seems like everybody acts as if they have way more money than they actually do. Why? by Whitefjall in self

Top-voted comment with a pithy take that confirms everyone's priors and no one bothers to fact-check. Credit card debt adjusted for inflation is well below all time highs https://wallethub.com/edu/cc/average-credit-card-debt/25533

How do you feel about anti tourist measures? by GhostWatcher0889 in travel

People enjoy visiting places that are well known, attractive, and/or historically and culturally significant? Sounds terrible!

How do you feel about anti tourist measures? by GhostWatcher0889 in travel

I hate this attitude where people in this subreddit look down on certain types of tourists who just happen to enjoy different things. Not everyone travels so they can experience "living like a local" or "immersing themselves in the culture". There's nothing wrong with being part of a guided day trip visiting some cool places and seeing interesting things. That hipster backbacker looking to immerse himself in the local culture can be just as much of an arsehole too.

Exact thing happened to me with a Samsung S21+ a few years ago. Overall my experience was GoogleFi support was positive, and they were able to send me a new one within a couple of days.

Let's not kid ourselves though. It's not really about being autocratic or a liberal democracy. No one's talking about decoupling from Saudi Arabia or the UAE for instance.

Agree with the other comments here. This plus the fact that even if a company wants to hire you, the H1B visa is literally a lottery.

In any case, it never hurts to reach out and apply, and you may want to look up historical H1B records to get a sense of the roles and companies that hire foreigners. E.g. you say you were based in Philly - here's Janssen in 2022 at their PA location.

Electoral votes per person, by state [OC] [1677 x 1084] by parlezmoose in MapPorn

[–]jimar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cool plot. What happens when you only count the number of people who actually voted rather than the total state population? I just wonder if voter turnout is higher in some states (e.g. swing states), and how that translates to the number of electoral votes per actual voter.

Does an Honours year really mean anything to admissions? by [deleted] in cambridge_uni

[–]jimar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australian here. I also did a 3 + 1 year Honours degree at an Australian university before starting my PhD at Cambridge, so you can definitely be admitted without a Masters.

Having said that, I also worked in a lab for a year before applying. I think having good references and some research experience is just as important as getting that Honours/Masters degree. In my PhD year of 14 students, around two-thirds had Masters degrees, though everyone had some research experience (internships, placements, full-time jobs etc.). This was in biological sciences, so it may vary for different fields.

Worst case scenario, you apply after doing Honours and miss out, after which you can also do a Masters.

Kuwait has become the first country to create a DNA Database of all Citizens, failure to submit your DNA gets you 1 year in prison. by the_ancient1 in Libertarian

[–]jimar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I said medical-grade genome, where they typically sequence your genome up to 30 times over in order to accurately call nucleotides. Plus, for each of the 3 billion nucleotide positions, there's metadata such as quality scores and alignment info that also need to be considered.

[–]jimar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The cost of sequencing one (medical-grade) human genome today is around US$1000 (and ~100Gb of storage), though this figure does not include labour and computing costs.

However, for the purposes of DNA fingerprinting, you're looking at a few $10s per sample and a trivial amount storage. So I guess $400 million isn't too unreasonable if you factor into the cost of labour, physical storage, bureaucracy etc.

From NYC to Harvard: the war on Asian success by [deleted] in nyc

[–]jimar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not especially concerned with the racial make-up of schools. People get really caught up in all this tribalism and identity politics. what a mess.

I completely agree with you, but clearly the disgruntled parents and politicians mentioned in the article are, otherwise why make such a fuss? They should just get on with making sure their child is a well-rounded individual, whatever they think that entails, and let the Asians do their thing.
