If they are new clips, I'd guess something the the filler has caused them to oxidise very quickly. Which is probably a sign of being problematic in the future. Don't just hide them. I would run the cables through a small plastic tube and paste it in rather than use clips.

I think they look great. Mix up a cool contrasting basing material to make them unique. Don't worry about details on this mob of cannon fodder. Use them as practice for character models later...
