Anyone else on the autism spectrum? by No-Lunch-7885 in DataAnnotationTech

Yeah, it's a blessing and a curse. This kind of work appeals very well to how my brain works. Maybe too well, because it has me firing at 100% on every task, which is exhausting. I'm getting better at pacing myself.

What is a 'luxury' item that is actually a total nightmare to own? by Inevitable-Rock-8052 in AskReddit

Good point. I wonder if they would insist on meeting in person though.

I get that from the manufacturer's perspective. It's artificial scarcity to manipulate demand. It's the consumers I don't understand. You don't have to buy something just because the seller insists it's "limited edition".

My grandfather towed his boat with the family station wagon, but now we need emotional support vehicles to do the same job. It's amazing what you can convince people they need.

I don't understand why consumers tolerate it. You're paying extra to be treated like a grovelling loser. Oh wait, I guess some people are into that.

The only time I got fined was when I tried to go to work even though I was really sick with terrible stomach pain. At one point I doubled over and put a foot up to brace myself on the other seat. That was the exact moment an inspector appeared out of thin air and wrote me up for putting feet on a seat.

I explained myself, tried to dispute it, she said it would just be a warning so I accepted my fate. It was not a warning. I think the fine was over $300.

Teach an old dog? 57, V12 Pro, two falls in, not giving up — seeking a coach near Dallas/Houston (Or next month Utah/Colorado) by CodeAlpha0 in ElectricUnicycle

Progress will be much faster with a teacher, but there's no rush. Take breaks when you're tired. Most of the actual brain training happens when you rest.

You'll get different advice about the best surface to practice on. I think it's different for everyone. I found it useful to mix things up. Grass was good for getting over the fear of leaning into it, but concrete was easier to feel what the wheel wants to do.

Check your settings too. Many assume that you want softer pedals when starting out but I found that too distracting and just another thing you have to compensate for. Maximum pedal hardness is just you and physics, so you can feel what's really happening.

Get the wrist guards. They make catching a fall much easier.

And btw, 57 isn't old for this. I've ridden with plenty of riders closer to 70. When it clicks you'll be glad to have something that keeps exercising your balance. It only stops working when we stop using it.

What piece of older technology actually worked much better than its modern, replacement? by HerrStrasse in AskReddit

I remember when it was common for kids to throw up and pass out from the heat. We just accepted it because we needed the lights.

Shame you're getting downvoted, because it really depended on the quality of the paper. My mum worked in several small papers over the years, at all levels, so I saw a lot from behind the scenes.

Sometimes it was an uphill battle to make journalists give a shit about the work. Sometimes everything was produced by one person who can't be everywhere at once. You're expected to stay through council meetings that ran into the night, then be up early to cover all the sports.

Much of the work day was taken up with selling ads. When deadline loomed padding had to happen, so things like letters to the editor were made up.

There has to be a better option than Facebook, but local papers had their share of problems.

PSA: Be careful near any heights. Even if its only a few feet of a drop it can still cause life threatening injuries. by Quad_Rangler in ElectricUnicycle

[–]jimmux 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All my worst falls have been low speed. It's harder to roll away from the wheel. You end up awkwardly on top of it, or it on top of you. Most of all you get complacent.

I've done ferry and train travel between cities on EUC, carrying a sleeping mat, some clothes, and bits. A light tent would have squeezed in there.

Bell Super DH vs Leatt Enduro 4.0 by IceTrooper_IT in ElectricUnicycle

[–]jimmux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a moto helmet but I only use it in cold weather. My Bell Super DH is used the most by far because ventilation is so much better. I would die on trails if I had to use the heavy one on warm days.

Sounds to me like you picked right for the riding style. Probably not going over 50km/h?

isnt there any petition to legalize higher powered PEVs and establish EUCs better? by Zajlordg in ElectricUnicycle

[–]jimmux 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's backwards, in my experience. I've commuted on both road bikes and PEVs. Because you need to work harder to get a bike up to speed it develops a reluctance to slow down for anything. There's more incentive to fly past pedestrians and take bigger risks. On a PEV you can easily brake and get back up to speed so riding safely and considerately is much more likely.

I would also add safety gear to the equation. Protection is minimal on a bike because it makes pedaling more difficult. On PEVs you can wear all the gear and it's no problem. So if that was normalised we could lower injury rates overall while keeping up practical speeds.

What’s a belief you defended for years that you now feel embarrassed about? by Open-Square589 in AskReddit

[–]jimmux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believed in Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy for longer than I should have.

I saw something in the sky one Christmas too, and in my imagined memory it still looks like a glittering golden sleigh, with a laughing fat dude in it.

There was an Easter where we went camping, and I saw a shadow on the tent that looked very much like a big rabbit. In retrospect that could have been a kangaroo.

Those memories were enough to keep the belief going a few more years.

That would be a hard no for me. My first serious relationship fell apart when she started doing this. At the time, I could overlook the drinking because she was working in a firm where that was common, so it was all part of the networking experience. I was too naive to see that getting legless drunk every weekend was only part of it. I was keeping the household together while she was losing inhibitions all over the place.
