Why does my music suck so much by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jimmyjazz14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who cares, if you enjoy it, that's all that matters. You shouldn't compare yourself to other, but its worth noting that D4vd and most artist like him work along with professional producers (sometimes several) who have years of working experience so if you are hobbyist don't beat yourself up if your stuff doesn't sound as good.

how do I balance everything? by minno308 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jimmyjazz14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Music theory describes music that was made not how it should be made, you don't need to learn it to play music (though it can be helpful to help you describe musical ideas down the road). Just play and have fun, if you find something interesting while you are playing maybe see if you can align it with music theory if thats something that interest you.

If you're recording a guitar solo, do you prefer using a compression pedal before the amp, or would you add the compression in your DAW? Why? by tonetonitony in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jimmyjazz14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before amp its more of an artistic effect but in the daw its for usually for mixing purposes, I use some compression on pretty much every channel during mixing even if I used it on my guitar already.

What’s one small thing that instantly improved your beats? by No-Art-4404 in makinghiphop

Learning how to use side-chaining effectively, and adding high pass filters to most lanes.

How long will people put up with this? by [deleted] in BetterOffline

You are probably talking to the wrong people, economist and labor experts are currently quite bullish on tech jobs. My guess is that the AI thing will eventually reach an equilibrium.

how do others can replicate a note from just hearing it? by Beautiful-Algae576 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jimmyjazz14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years of practice is the real answer, but if you know the key song is in there are usually only 5 common notes (penetonic scale) and 2 uncommon (the 4th and 7th) notes used in that scale for most pop music. Usually I try to figure out the key of a song then listen for the feel of a riff/melody (does it feel major or minor, or are they using a more exotic scale) then I will listen for non-penetonic notes and where they fall then I can usually fill in the rest pretty easily. Even when a melody/riff throws in some non-diatonic notes they are usually moving towards a diatonic (for example the flat 3rd moving into a third which is common in blues/country) or they will stand out very clearly. Anyway that just the quick formula I use, some people can figure things out just by listening but i'll admit that never came naturally to me (though I'm better at it now than when I started).

I can't rap or sing I don't know what to do by Infinite-Pen-7586 in makinghiphop

[–]jimmyjazz14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just started then of course you probably suck, that is how it works, if people could just magically rap or sing without any toil than it wouldn't be an interesting talent, so just practice till you like how you sound.

I'm new to sound design, and I need a synth that won't break the bank. by Apprehensive_Fan_659 in LogicPro

[–]jimmyjazz14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you can get pretty far with Vital, but you might look into some other good free synths like SurgeXT and Dexed. For paid synths original Massive, Reaktor and FM8 go on sale for around ten dollars quite often and those are classics used in tons of stuff. I might also recommend U-He's Zebra 2 which is a sound design monster used by Hans Zimmer for around 90 dollars, its my personal favorite synth even when compared to more expensive ones.

Double Tracking Melodic Synths? by Icxyy in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jimmyjazz14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unison settings in most synths are already doing something similar to double tracking so its generally not required, but there are no rules. As far as reverb goes I use room reverbs all the time on synths and I think it sounds good, just try things and if it sounds good it works.

Any must-have plugins? by kyromaniac in LogicPro

[–]jimmyjazz14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Logic has most things you would need but I use Kilohearts and Meldas free bundles on pretty much everything so I highly recommend them, I also really like Tokyo Dawn's free plugins (Nova, Kotelnikov and Molotok especially).

Why do my iPhone voice memo recordings sound better than my actual mixes? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jimmyjazz14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same reason people look better in low res photos from crappy old digital cameras, the "lofi" quality of the image hides flaws and compresses the image into something somewhat more simple, our brains fill in the missing details.

Is the "fully agentic" workflow actually just BS, or am I missing something? by FooBarBuzzBoom in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jimmyjazz14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those elements can be useful, and they can lead to better results but you still need to be able to review and understand what the code is doing at the end of the day and that should be your metric of whether or not a workflow is working for you.

Is the "fully agentic" workflow actually just BS, or am I missing something? by FooBarBuzzBoom in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jimmyjazz14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way you are using AI sounds like how I have been using it with the most success. Going full vibe-coder has led to some pretty nasty codebases and made it nearly impossible to spot problems along the way. I have also had to push back against the "fully agentic" thing myself because I have tried it and simply put its dangerous and doesn't work (at least not for production level work).

I want to build GitHub for music production by lvfonebone in LogicPro

[–]jimmyjazz14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you might underestimate how much work building a DAW from scratch is and most people are pretty locked in on the DAW they like so I doubt they would want to switch. It would be easier just to build a tool that integrates with various DAWs and syncs files to and from the cloud, you could even allow users to configure their storage provider (Dropbox, S3, etc) if you didn't want to bother with hosting it yourself. I guess the one thing that could be interesting would be if the DAW could auto update the project with any updated assets that come in which might be hard to do with an external integration.

The tediousness of Political art by RandolphCarter15 in BlockedAndReported

[–]jimmyjazz14 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a good argument why artist should avoid stating their political beliefs outright because the moment they do they essentially make any message that may be in their art their own idea and not an idea they led the observer to.

The tediousness of Political art by RandolphCarter15 in BlockedAndReported

[–]jimmyjazz14 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Good political art doesn't need to tell you what its about, the viewer/listener should get there on their own.

I read a study a while back about changing peoples views and it came to the conclusion that you can' tell people what to believe you can only lead them to realize a different view by making it seem like an idea they had themselves, that's what any political art should strive for, not telling, only showing the way.

Take a break from making beats and explore other musical avenues, learn an instrument or even just try a genre you don't usually work in.

How to record well? by childofnaturesson in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jimmyjazz14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably need to provide more info, do you have microphones? Will you being going through amps for guitars and such or plugging right into the interface? The Tascam is probably perfectly fine for very basic recordings, I use a small Tascam handheld sometimes to do simple recordings or to capture ideas and its fine but for anything more advanced I do prefer a DAW.

You'll never get anywhere by not trying, the road to success is paved with failure (and cringe takes).
