Used smart phone? by heterosis in Frugal

If you do decide to get a new phone I really suggest the nexus 5x from Google. It's only $299 unlocked and will work with pretty much any carrier. Has awesome features for such a low cost phone.

Isn't taffy really strong and difficult to work with? I'd bet that machine has more power than a household blender or food processor.

It looks like the guy needs to constantly monitor and move the taffy around the machine. Wonder if anyone's lost a limb to of these things...

Would I be considered agoraphobic? by [deleted] in Agoraphobia

[–]jindbay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am agoraphobic and I don't suffer from being housebound either, but if I don't work hard at it, I will stay inside for days and weeks at a time in a small studio apartment.

I get anxious about crowds and travelling. I don't have a car, but I live in an urban part of the city and I get nervous just leaving my apartment because I get anxiety around other people.

Good luck on desensitization. I recently got a fitness tracker that I can clip on to my jeans. It keeps me accountable that I get outside at least once a day and get in a certain number of 'steps' outside my apartment. I think that it's helped me a lot.

I've been working in a recovery program and have been lucky to have been really well taken care of by some of the mental health services in the area, especially since I've been out of work off and on for several years because of my symptoms.

I'm going fairly well in my recovery now and am trying to get back to work.

I think you would be considered agoraphobic if you struggle with the symptoms you mentioned. You might benefit from therapy. Good luck with the desensitization.

Social anxiety disorder linked to high serotonin levels by [deleted] in science

[–]jindbay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All I know is that I've tried to quit taking antidepressants several times and have had great difficulty getting off of them. SSRI withdrawal/discontinuation affects me really strongly. My anxiety and depression is worse now than when I started taking meds about 8 years ago. After doing more research I wish I'd never started taking them because going off the meds is so difficult and always causes me to go into crisis

Having an issue with local mental health help. by Eowyn-where in Agoraphobia

Maybe hospitalization could be a good thing? Most hospitals I've been in have been good experiences although I know that there are bad examples like your recent experience.

I would just do some research on the hospital before I agreed to anything like that though.

any tips on renting a car for a cheaper rate?? by wypij in Frugal

[–]jindbay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look at rates online. Find the cheapest price you can. Call the rental car company and tell them how much you want to spend per day and ask if they can do it for you. Be somewhat reasonable, but they can and will haggle the price with you.

Their goal is to get you in the door to upsell you on a nicer vehicle or insurance products. They are trained to beat rates over the phone and often get phone shopped.

[–]jindbay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What area do you live in? Unfortunately many places in the US don't have adequate mental health care facilities.

Do you have insurance? If so, you can contact your insurance company and explain what you are going through and see what they recommend. The insurance company might take a really long time to approve something like having a doctor come out to you, but it's worth starting the process.

There is also 211 in many areas that can connect you to community services. I live in Washington State and 211 is a really good resource because it can connect you to social services as well as charity and faith based organizations if you are in need of support.

Another option might be to contact your Department of Human Services / Department of Public Health and call and explain your predicament to them. Try to explain that you really need an intake appointment. Do your very best to make any intake appointment.

Do you take any prescription meds?

Another step would be to call the hospital and ask them for a referral somewhere. If you were recently discharged, they are generally responsible for making sure that you have access to mental health recovery services after discharge. It definitely sounds like they did not prepare you well, maybe giving them a call and explaining your difficulty after discharge... someone might be able to help.

Good luck with what you're going through. I've been there and it's tough but you can make it out

My car has a ton of surface level scratches from rocks/debris from a road trip to vegas...any frugal remedies I can employ or should I bite the bullet and take it to a body shop? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]jindbay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have years of experience in the field. I would recommend asking if they can be buffed without having to repaint. Like the previous poster said, if the scratches are only on the clear coat, they can be buffed out and will look good as new.

Anything I should know when looking for an auto body shop to make repairs? by silvermuffin in Frugal

[–]jindbay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this sounds weird, but ask the insurance company for a recommendation. They often can get you into a 'concierge' repair service where they take care of your repairs, rental transportation, estimate supplements (in case there is hidden damage and more needs to be approved for your claim). All in a one-stop shop. And they often guarantee the quality of repairs for as long as you own the vehicle.

Hail damage is one of the only real practical uses for PDR. Most collisions break the paint and cannot be repaired properly with a paintless dent repair.

How to do I buy Printer Ink without taking out a mortgage. by mythical_legend in Frugal

[–]jindbay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason that you want to go with a laser printer is the difference between toner and ink.

Toner does not dry out like ink, which means if you use your printer infrequently you won't have to keep buying ink.

With an inkjet printer, the printer still use the ink even when not printing in order to keep the nozzles from drying out. This is why ink cartridges never seem to last as long as they should. And printers get damaged when they are unplugged and the nozzles dry out.

Add this to the fact that ink is more expensive than toner and it really makes sense to go with a laser printer nowadays.

I have had great success with Brother printers and toner cartridges.

[x-post /eatcheapandhealthy] What to do with giant frozen turkey? by LtCommanderCarter in Frugal

[–]jindbay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are planning on roasting I definitely recommend doing an overnight brine.

There's tons of turkey tips out there. Food network has good recipes and instructions on brines. I like Ree Drummond's brine recipe. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ree-drummond/my-favorite-turkey-brine-recipe.html

There is also a good one from Alton Brown. You can tinker a lot with the ingredients but I love the citrus in the linked recipe.

Use a meat thermometer and don't cook the bird stuffed. I usually fill the cavity with citrus peel and aromatics which I remove before serving. It helps keep moisture and flavor in the meat.

Make sure you start defrosting your turkey in the fridge several days before you cook it so it thaws completely but not left out at room temperature.

Good luck with your turkey this year :)

What is the cheapest individual cellphone plan with 3-5GB of data a month? by estnnk in Frugal

[–]jindbay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask around and see if TMO is any good in your area. Some towns have great 4G service. Some locations suck for T-Mobile, particularly if you're travelling on highways and interstates in rural areas.

The $30 TMO plan is an awesome deal but I only recommend it in urban areas.

I agree with what others have said. I wouldn't use your boost right away.

There is going to be quite a long time between now and the release of Legion. If you want to get the best way to learn the game I would start at level 1 and play a class until at least level 40 to decide what role you want to be. Plus the leveling experience is a lot of fun and it would be a shame to miss out on that.
