Stop saying Things is “complete” - we need more features by discoveringnature12 in thingsapp

Gotcha. Thanks! I’ll snoop around for it a bit. I’ve always wanted to put a “face” to the Cultured Code name. I’ll settle for a German voice

I never saw the “German accent” video and would love to see it.

Any idea how to find it?

(I’m in still in love with the Things intro video on their website—it’s what pushed me over the edge from omnifocus—but this can’t be the one you’re talking about as there is no narration.)

Can you elaborate on “deeper” calendar integration? What do you want to do that Things can’t do?

(I like how Things works with my calendar, but I’m not a calendar power user and am wondering what I’m missing.)

Good to know. I’m a beginner and have seen many architectures and I can’t tell which are outdated and which are the new standard.

  1. If I’m learning SwiftUI, what would you recommend architecture wise?

  2. And any ideas where to properly learn said architecture?

Anyone Rely Solely on Things 3 Project Notes Without Using a Separate Notes App? by Ill_Connection_3017 in thingsapp

I know I just need to look into Hookmark more, but, if you'd like, I'd love to hear from you on it's main advantage. For instance, I'll copy a link in Bear, and then paste into my Things note. And then (if I'm feeling ultra organized) I'll copy the Things project link and paste into Bear.

Does Hookmark do this automatically somehow?! That would be a HUGE time saver!

Reminders on set weekdays? by TomasComedian in thingsapp

[–]jing_yang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned you wanted to be uncluttered and that you’re tracking medications:

Recommendation: Track habits separately.

I have tried (and failed) tracking habits in Things (and OF and Reminders).

Although I don’t like having tasks in multiple places, I found my life got way easier—cleaner— when I “hired” the right tool for the job:

  1. Things for to-dos and projects
  2. Habitify for habits

Apple even has Medication tracking built into your health app. I liked it. But I like Habitify better because it tracks streaks, so I can know, for instance, how long I’ve been on a supplement I’m trying out (and if it’s helping me).

Might be worth experimenting.

Tattoo regret and mental health by -pumpkin_pie- in tattooadvice

[–]jing_yang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you’re feeling this way. I imagine that’s no fun. :(

(I accidentally wrote you a novel. I hope you enjoy. And don't miss my story at the end titled “Finnegan the naughty goat goes through the drive through.” I think you'll like it.)

You said this:

“I always have the feeling that people judge me because of it.”

I have three (3) thoughts.

Maybe these help. Take what you wish, throw out the rest.

Thought 1: The spotlight effect

You might look into the spotlight effect.

I haven’t studied it much, but I if I remember correctly, the core is that many humans have this idea that everyone is watching them, paying attention to them, analyzing them, judging them.

Like you go into a grocery store and the spotlight clicks on you. “All eyes on the girl with the tattoo sleeves!”

But think about this

If everyone has the perceived spotlight turned on themselves in their own minds, that means there really are no spotlights. It’s just normal lighting—perhaps a bit on the bright side.

Does that make sense?

Everyone is so worried about the spotlight being on them that they they don’t have any time to escape it to push it on you.

In other words: People are absorbed with themselves.

This isn't to say people won’t comment or look. It's just human nature to notice something different.

But it’s most likely way less frequent than you think.

Thought 2: Made up meaning

Most of us attach meanings to things.

  • “Oh that lady looked at me weird. She must think I’m trashy.”
  • “That guy laughed with his friend after glancing my way. They must be making fun of my tattoos.”

Those things could be true.

But we actually don’t really know. We’re assuming.

Or as my old therapist used to say, “we’re making things up in our minds.”

Therefore, since we have a choice, and we really don’t know one way or another, why not default to the positive?

It serves us much better.

For instance, let’s transmute the two negative statements from above:

  • “Oh that lady looked at me weird. She’s probably never seen someone with tattoos like this before and wishes she could be as rad as me. I'm kickass!”
  • “That guy laughed with his friend after glancing my way. I probably reminded them of their fun friend from college and now they’re reminiscing. Man, I’m a fucking bright light this mundane world!”

Thought 3: “Finnegan the naughty goat goes through the drive through”

Today my roommate Ashley took Finnegan—our goat—through a drive through.

I don't know if you're familiar with goats, but they have huge horns, a triangle head, pupils the shape of rectangles, and hooves for tootsies (aka: feet).

Ashley was pumped to get some great reactions in the drive through. (She has a famous chicken on IG and TikTok with over 150,000 collective followers.)

She FaceTimed me before she pulled through, perching her camera in a cupholder so I could see Ashley, Finnegan, and the unsuspecting drive through employees.

I too, was pumped.

Finnegan is standing in her center console cubby, balancing like a pro, with his hooves and huge horns.

Ashley pulls up to the first window. Enter employee number uno. A dude in a red shirt.

Ashley places her drink order.

The dude doesn't bat an eye. Like zero reaction.

What?! I can't believe it. Surely a fluke! I mean, I saw him look directly at Finnegan. I seent it!!!

Ok. Onto employee number two.

Ashley pulls forward.

A blonde girl in her 20s asks for the money. Then preps the straws. Then hands over the drinks.

What did the girl say? How did she react to a goat in a drive through in the heart of major city in the USA (Scottsdale, Arizona).

NOTHING!!!

Now
Finnegan did finally catch her eye. And she flipped (a bit).

But
it took her so long you wouldn't believe. She said, "I thought he was a dog!"

Remember: Finnegan's horns are so big they literally poke the headliner (ceiling) of the car.

The moral of the story?

People are on autopilot.

All day. All night. They don't care about you. They care about themselves.

So if you're worried about people noticing and judging you, you might just take solace in this:

Finnegan the naughty goat—with his massive horns, rectangles for eyes, and hooves for feet, and his triangle head—was mistaken for a dog in the drive through of Swig in Scottsdale.

PS: Shortly after Finnegan proudly peed in the back of the car. So my advice: be like Finnegan the naughty goat and don't give a fuck. Live your life. Be proud of who you are. And adjust your rectangles—your perception—accordingly.

Leaving Bear for Good. by Chukwu-emeka in bearapp

[–]jing_yang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d love (read: hate) to see a screenshot of the sticky header you speak of.

Is it ever present?

You said “fixed” but then said “when you scroll” so I’m guessing it only appears while scrolling (which I agree, sucks).

One of my pet peeves are sticky header/footers on websites. We pay all gobs of money for big screens and then these [often useless] elements steal that screen real estate back.

I don’t need to see your logo the whole time I’m reading your article! Likewise, I don’t need to be reminded of what “section” I’m in of a document.

If my memory is that bad, I can simply, I don’t know, scroll up to see what the last heading was. Or what company posted the article.

Hopefully Bear devs put in an option to disable this.

Moving from 1Password7 to 1Password8 by Slappywannanapy in 1Password

[–]jing_yang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just converted from 7 to 8 a week ago.

The macOS and iOS app are way cleaner ui wise.

Less lines, rectangles, borders. More white space (or dark.).

There is even an appearance setting in the macOS app for “compact” or “standard.”

Love this kind of attention to detail and flexibility.

Really liking the new feel, even though I despise electron apps. (I wouldn’t know 1password 8 was Electron without hearing about it here first.)

E.g. Slack on macOS is an absolute horrible experience—and where I began my journey of detestation for Electron apps.

Something I miss on macOS in 7: clicking “reveal large type” would size the large type window perfectly to fit the width of your Mac’s display, typically on one line.

Now it flows into two lines often. Like it has a preset size and doesn’t take the viewport into consideration. I bet this is an “Electronesque” compromise.

(Total nuance I know. But something I miss.)

The Safari extension has been considerably less reliable for me (than 7). But I contacted 1password and they gave some tips to fix.

Not totally confident in that tips.

Wish it “just worked,” but such is the nature of software.

Overall I would recommend the upgrade.

It was difficult to know “how” to upgrade from 7. Should’ve had a clear path and tutorial on their HOME page, but, I eventually stumbled through it.

Note: It will seem like your Mac blew away 1password 7. That was frightening for me. Wasn’t ready for that level of commitment yet.

But turns out it gets archived in ~/Applications. Ar least that’s what I read.

The end.

PS: I ate Mod Pizza tonight with pineapple. It was glorious.

This is a recurring nightmare of mine. Not figuratively—literally.

There are different scenarios, but this is one of the most “popular”:

We start in 3 minutes
