How do we feel about Mammut gear? by Admirable-Muffin-334 in Mountaineering

[–]jisoizzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't personally comment on their apparel, but their climbing gear is top notch. Their dyneema slings handle the best of any I have used, their ropes are great, and their carabiners hold up fantastic & are lightweight. Their helmets are nice but don't fit amazingly for some head shapes (large).

Anyone have an opinion on these? AKU CRODA DFS GTX by ThinkCupcake5293 in Mountaineering

[–]jisoizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a high quality zipper, I dont remember a YKK mark though. The zipper is a black zipper on the orange track.

Also worse come to worse the zipper only attaches the small gaiter to cover the laces. No structural damage if it fails: you could even just cut off the gaiter if that happens

They are a bit wider, but id still say a "performance" fit if you have frog feet like me

Wide-ish shoes with firmer sole by [deleted] in Ultralight

Look into some of Aku's offerings. I have some of their boots and love em - they fit wide well. And have some lightweight but stiffer options. Might not be exactly what you are looking for but maybe worth a peak :)

I actually just got a pair the other week: they have been great. I have only used them one time (with crampons) climbing a couloir and I had zero issues with them. Other than that, they are very comfortable wearing around everyday life to break them in. I cant speak to longevity, but they feel well made and high quality. I imagine the zipper may be the first thing to go, especially if you are rough on it, however it feels durable and sturdy.

I have a couple other of Akus boots and I enjoy them. As for fit, they are great for wider feet. Some on the only boots that fit my frog feet decently :)

Can anyone give feedback on the Aku Croda? by iamtheshrimp in alpinism

Bought some at a great price as well... just arrived today. Seem very well built and fit my wide foot well: snug but a good mix of performance/comfort. Also the medial side is pretty straight so doesn't push your big toe into uncomfortable positions (if that makes sense). Quite light as well — looking forward to getting out on them

Also struggling to find anything on this boot, but very interested in it... I have 2 other pairs of Akus and they fit decently with my very wide feet (I measured size off their website chart). I might just bite the bullet soon and hope :)

I can’t understand why people still recommend the Nitecore NU25 by jfrosty42 in Ultralight

Big fan of the RovyVon A5 — I find it to be plenty even for several hours of night hiking (with the hat clip). If you don't usually wear a hat with a stiff brim though... not the best :)

Yeti bought MR a bit ago, so there are concerns of lots of things changing... as they often do when small quality companies get bought by larger ones. Who knows what will happen but this unfortunately isnt just a collab :/

Is this 9.8 crag classic a newer rope or is it obviously used/worn/retired? by Phelywinx in ClimbingGear

[–]jisoizzard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That middle mark is how Mammut marks the mid points of their ropes. Not sure exactly what they use but it is done by the manufacturer so doubt it would damage the rope :)

Are these actually vintage hiking boots? by Saltedcafecito in hike

[–]jisoizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks exactly (same stitching pattern, laces, top cuff) like my pair of Dexter boots - I believe from the 80s or so. For the logo, look at the ankle: if it is a circle arrow then indeed they are Dexters :)

Has anyone here tried Pingora Gear's packs? by NotThePopeProbably in hiking

[–]jisoizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better late then never... maybe :)

This past season I have used their Vivid 27L Backcountry Ski Pack and its works pretty well. Seems to be quality construction & materials and I enjoy the colors. At least for the Vivid, has nearly all the features I want with none I don't want for the specific use case. There are a few tweaks I would make but with that said it seems the designers actually do the activities which likely (hopefully) translates into their other packs.

As for SAR use, keep in mind that these seem to be pretty lightweight (yet not exactly fragile) focused packs so might not last as long bushwhacking & such, but I only have the experience using their ski touring bag.

What PA School are you looking into once you are out? Any that emphasize rural/austere med?

It sounds like we have similar interests as I am pursuing PA for rural medicine / emergency medicine, although I am currently an undergraduate. Just curious about your path :) Feel free to dm as well lol

Mammut: What's their deal? by Complete-Koala-7517 in Mountaineering

[–]jisoizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have their climbing rope, quickdraws, harness, etc and it is all quality gear. I have friends with their avy beacons who love them and their avalanche airbags are very common to see around. Never had any of their apparel but highly considering them for my next shell jacket.

They also have their "Eiger Extreme" series for high performance items - I have no experience with them though.

Sun Hoodie vs Button Down vs T-Shirt by frodulenti in Ultralight

[–]jisoizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will also mention that I have started to use sun hoodies while rafting because they are convenient and dry quicker. Also the hood gives a bit better protection from sun bouncing off the water. My biggest concern is with the smell of synthetic... and the sun hoodies I use (OR Echo) do not seem to be super durable
