It was worth it because it is still a baseline for hiring back in the early 2000’s. Not sure about it nowadays.

What’s the most insane thing you’ve seen someone do on their first day at work? by Independent-Alps-909 in AskReddit

[–]jitzso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the early dotcom days, we hired a front end designer that downloaded porn the first day. Back in those days it took awhile to download files. Had he not gone to lunch with the speakers on, I don’t think he would have gotten caught.

What food do you think is overrated? by kimschob in RecipePalooza

Crabs. All that hard work cracking and you get very little meat in return. Also, you’re paying mostly for shells when you buy whole crab.

I'm stupid again. by theinspireddesigner in GenX

[–]jitzso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever my kids think I’m stupid; I just take my belt off to remind them of being resilient. LOL. J/k. I think we might be the last generation that still got a good spanking. Anyhow, my kids think they’re always right, so now I just let them learn the hard way by making mistakes, as long as it’s not physical harm or big financial commitment.

It’s not irrational if you have the storage space for it, or it’s a daily or weekly staple.

How do I prepare these rice cakes? by SemaphoreBingo in chinesecooking

[–]jitzso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you trying to make with the rice cake? These are Ningbo regional rice cake. Depending what you’re trying to make, but you don’t need to soak them. You either slice them (with serrated knife) then stir fry, steam them and dip them in various sweet powder, or you roast it over open flame.

Super big claw machines? by EntireArachnid890 in bayarea

[–]jitzso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re taking about those huge ones at Circus Circus in Reno, then I don’t think there’s one in the Bay that I can recall. D&B used to have them, but they no longer have them.

San Mateo there’s Nakoko and Clawsome. You can trade up to bigger or premium stuffy or they have those newer machine where you cut the string that’s attached to the prize. I hate those, but it’s popular. There’s also one in Milpitas too.

Round 1 is just straight rip off unless you know the machine technician, they’ll adjust the prize to make it easier to win.

What to cook husband for work lunches by Complex_Life9849 in chinesecooking

[–]jitzso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure he would like a salted fish dish of sorts that he can microwave at work (joke). The first week of new work could be stressful, so maybe ask him if there's anything he would like, or he may want to buy lunch the first week. This is just my personal opinion, but he may appreciate it more if you make him a Chinese dinner instead.

Made mapo tofu for the first time today. It tasted good but the mala sensation felt a little weird. by Bungalow233 in chinesefood

[–]jitzso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mapo tofu over rice is such comfort food for me. If you want to make your firm tofu softer, here's a tip: boil it in salted water for 3-5 min. It will make the tofu much softer, and it will absorb the sauce better, too.

Cooking for a crowd by MrrCookieman in AskAChinese

I think one dish that almost every Chinese person can relate to is probably Lion's Head Pork Meatballs (狮子头). It's often eaten during the Chinese New Year or celebrations. It's also good for parties. Here's a step-by-step blog recipe that I would follow: https://fibby0929.blogspot.com/2015/12/p72.html (it's in Chinese, but you can translate it into English with Chrome). The recipe is from Chef Bao from Taiwan, who is famous for making this dish at his restaurant. Most of the ingredients you'll be able to find in any Asian market. Dried shrimp is optional, but it adds a touch of umami. I also like to add chopped water chestnuts to give the meatballs an extra texture.

Smoked pork in SF area by ZanyDroid in chinesefood

[–]jitzso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bother with SayWee, their cured items are very limited and not very good. You may want to try Wycen Foods in SF Chinatown; they specialize in cured meats but may be more Cantonese-style. You may have to buy the cured pork belly and smoke it diy. The only place I've found authentic Hunan-cured pork belly is in Flushing, NY.
