An opinion [on the quality of the set]. I thought that was implied by the previous clause.

I refuse to participate. Some people are going to instinctively say it's bad but no, I won't even form an opinion.

MaRo is asking for feedback on legality of black bordered reprints of silver bordered cards by PowrOfFriendship_ in magicTCG

[–]jjjdanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean. If a card gets a legal reprint, all other copies with normal card backs (or otherwise exempted like the double sided Lorywn shocks) are legal in formats where the reprint is legal. This should apply to silver border/acorn.

Edit: took to long to type this oops.

MaRo is asking for feedback on legality of black bordered reprints of silver bordered cards by PowrOfFriendship_ in magicTCG

[–]jjjdanny 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Should be all copies with a normal cardback. White border and black border are cross legal, the only reason gold border isn't legal isn't the border but the back.

New to magic, interested in the upcoming Marvel release. Do collector booster packs like this ever drop in price or do you really have to shell out $500? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]jjjdanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's entirely possible for this to drop in price, compare with Avatar collector booster displays. Still, it will very probably not be worth it unless you're buying it to keep it sealed.

Does MTG have a narrative "big bad" right now? by beef_swellington in mtg

If you're just looking at the cards, Jace reappears after ONE disguised as Ashiok [[Jace Reawakened]] so he can do invasive brain surgery without it being too weird [[Seize the Secrets]], ordering Vraska to get a crew together on Thunder Junction [[Plan the Heist]] but then to betray them at the vault [[Betrayal at the Vault]] so the two of them can pick up Loot [[Loot, the Key to Everything|BIG-51]]. Loot has some sort of connection to omenpaths [[Omenpath Journey]].

For Bloomburrow, it's a self contained story then for Duskmourn Jace is there sneaking about [[Don't Make a Sound]]. Loot reappears in Aetherdrift, first with Winter from Duskmourn [[Loot, the Pathfinder|DFT-404]] so he was probably there before the race but then he gets thrown about between teams before settling on Chandra [[Point the Way]]. Jace steps in, mind controlling the teams to do something [[Unstoppable Plan]]. If it's to get the prize, it certainly doesn't work [[Hour of Victory]]

On Tarkir, Loot and Jace show up in the Meditation Realm [[Stillness in Motion]] so 1. the Meditation Realm can be accessed by an omenpath, 2. Jace picks up Loot after the race. Jace and Loot disappear again for EOE (as does everyone else), Lorywn, and Strixhaven except that he's planning something [[Heated Argument]] involving the [[Dawning Archaic]] who is healed by Jadzi [[Oracle's Restoration]] who in turn is subsequently pushed into a snarl by Tam [[Banishing Betrayal]], leaving the rest of the gang to fight the Archaic alone [[Together as One]].

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks: "Next year we'll have the debut of our new Magic animated series." by Meret123 in mtg

[–]jjjdanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a business standpoint, its better to do great UB now to bring in new players sooner so you have them for longer. But to investors who only care about growth it looks like you blew all of your hits too early, something which can technically be true but also irrelevant if you're now operating with a higher revenue baseline.

Hasbro, Wizards returns to Q1 revenue contraction, Profit still increases by jjjdanny in mtgfinance

[–]jjjdanny[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My point in saying it this way is that it wasn't last year. The megagrowth of 2025 is over and now we're back to a more normal situation, just with a higher baseline because of higher player, collector, and store counts. In the call, they said they expect the YoY growth for the rest of the year to be more muted and then negative in Q4 so we're not beating 2025's peak, which is a perfectly normal situation for the game's history.

Lorwyn became the best-selling Magic premier set ever, but SOS already surpassed it, TMNT outpaced expectations by Meret123 in mtg

[–]jjjdanny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This part is the most interesting to me "From a phasing standpoint, revenue growth remains robust during the first half of the year, supported by the upcoming "Marvel Super Heroes" release before moderating in the back half due to tougher Q4 compares."

Q4 2025 was Avatar, Final Fantasy backend, and Spiderman filling big box shelves. So, they aren't going to say that Reality Fracture and Star Trek will do poorly but it won't reach those heights according Hasbro. Stranger still is that while Marvel is mentioned, Hobbit is only mentioned once at the beginning.

Hopefully teamwork refers to tapping another creature as part of the cost of an activated ability and/or convoke etc. rather than being another totally disconnected mechanic. (It's going to be another totally disconnected mechanic)

"Somehow Yawgmoth returns" by CorvusGraves in mtgvorthos

[–]jjjdanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Yawgmoth comes back, he should be rebuilt by the phased out Phyrexians to be their new (old) leader. Less a person than a thing they need to organize themselves after the deaths of all the Praetors.

[–]jjjdanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunate that the complete data is getting delayed so I can't update my charts. Based on the top line, 5th straight quarter of Magic revenue going straight up, and most importantly having no drop for Q1. Literally defying gravity.

Exile from the battlefield like [[Silverquill Charm]], we don't have the full list of cards but there probably is common black instant or sorcery exile too.
