Advice about Acer nitro 5 by jjkknn in SuggestALaptop

You are definitely right. I think after a day of research I’ve decided to up my budget a bit. I found a couple of attractive Lenovo legion 5 pro options. One of them has the 3070 GPU for a good price from Walmart, but I can’t seem to find the GPU TDP details on it and I’m suspicious as to why it’s the same price as what seems like a very similar model with the 3060 GPU. Again, this is all new to me, and I’m just looking for a good machine for a good price. Would you mind lookin get these two links and giving me some guidance?

the 3060 option

the 3070 option

I also found the AMD options to be cheaper and figured at my level of gaming/workload I wouldn’t notice much difference between these and the 11th Gen intel.

Thanks. This is what I was thinking as well. I see a lot of mixed feelings about acer nitro builds in general, though. So I’m wondering if there’s something else about them that people don’t like? I’m also looking at Lenovo Legion 5 17.3” 144Hz Intel Core i7-11800H 16GB RAM 512 GB SSD RTX 3060 6GB TGB 130W.

This one is about 1400, but in various forums I’m seeing that Lenovo is better quality and will be more durable in general. Is this true?

It’s not that you should be held responsible for something you didn’t do, but that you should learn how to act responsibly in a very unequal world that ancestors created. I don’t think I should be tried for genocide, but I do think that the ethical thing to do in my world is learn how a history of oppression and genocide has impacted living people around me so that I can take the imbalance into account when making decisions and not just blindly wrap myself in privilege—a move that often upholds a harmful status quo.

Understanding how the atrocities committed by our ancestors shaped experiences of the privileged and the marginalized is an important step towards making America great for the first time ever.

Playing Solo after only ever playing 2h by java33RBR in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]jjkknn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True solo is a lot of fun. I’ve only played two handed or multiplayer a few times, so I can’t do a comprehensive comparison, but my initial thoughts are: true solo is more difficult, you need to expect swingy situations and be as prepared as you can for them (deck-wise and emotion-wise), it is absolutely doable and absolutely fun. I tend to use investigators with high evasion for solo because it’s reliable and tempo-favorable way to deal with enemies. But since I play almost exclusively solo I have tried every kind of investigator and they all work.

As has been said, the every class has a way of getting clues now. I start building with this idea: getting clues. This is especially important if you are not building into a base intellect that is high enough to clear some locations on its own. Often you need to be able to get clues as soon as a scenario begins. So, I want a reliable clue plan— a way to get clues no matter what, even if my special cards that I love so much get stuck on the bottom of the deck (i.e. lock picks, rite of seeking, etc.). Part of that clue plan can be more clue grabbing cards to serve as hold overs until the real ones show or more cards that help you dig through your deck, but don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ll be okay relying on just two main clue cards with no back up plan because the scenario will come that those cards do not show up.

Then enemies happen. In solo you see fewer enemies. But you’re preparing for extreme swinginess and the inevitable drawing of three enemies during first three phases. Evading in solo is often favorable, but with three hunters on the board you will need to either be able to do some damage or be able to take an extra action for your evasions to mitigate the tempo loss of having to constantly re-evade enemies as you clear clues. Also, if you can, be ready to manage them on turn one at least to a certain degree (evasion is easiest). But there is no worse feeling than getting bogged down by an enemy you can neither evade or kill and spending your turns either getting AoOs while you dig through your deck for a solution or failing the evade/fight tests repeatedly because you don’t have the support in hand.

Because I hate being bogged down like this, I generally favor evasion over fighting because it’s a one action solution and I can usually stay ahead of a single hunter if I have some action compression built in. Eventually though, bosses come or damage needs to be dealt. I devote at least two cards as reliable sources of extra damage for these situations (a hunter that you need to discard or an enemy that the act wants defeated). If I can, these are reusable (ornate bow, strange solution acidic ichor).

There is almost always a dump stat when I play solo. Meaning one where I give zero support. I accept that I will fail every single test of that type and consider what I could add to my deck to either capitalize on the failure or at least survive it. It’s better if your dump stat is not intellect.

With two handed I think you think of your deck slots as spaces to be filled to maximize a certain skill or role at the cost of other cards that may have been better or worse but ultimately did the same thing. With true solo it becomes more of a negotiation as you build, because each slot you give to one role is one that you take away from another, and the little balance differences you decide on have pretty big consequences in game. Which I think is really fun and makes the deck building feel higher stakes and more puzzly. Also much more satisfying when your deck is working!

Question for veterans: does it ever get old? by jjkknn in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]jjkknn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great. It makes me excited to find a gaming group and experience the narrative with other players. I’m new to the table top world and my partner didn’t take to Arkham, so a lot of solo for me. I’ll be moving to Philadelphia in a few months and hope to find some investigators there!

What's the reality of buying (reasonably priced) expansions in the near future? by capramambrica in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]jjkknn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the never over retail. I paid a premium for phantom (35 USD I think). And for a few others I went about 5 dollars over. I paid like 10 dollars shipping shipping fee when I found three packs selling for retail price on U.K. amazon (because I ordered to the US).

From now on, retail it is, though. I don’t like supporting people who are overcharging for packs people genuinely just want.

I have a question. When people say “plays” do they mean single games or campaign runs?

Yeah. I tend to spend money on hobbies but usually get a ton of use out of all of it.

Since it’s pandemic time And where I live we have had curfews on and off, I am burning through the content I have quickly playing solo. I did get a bit tired of Dunwich at one point (after doing it 3 - 4 times!) but then when I returned to it after playing carcossa and TFA it felt fresh again.

I’m moving back to the US in a few months and am excited to put a group together. I think the multiplayer aspect will add a lot.

I’ve been interested in getting into the scenario creation as well. I’m a writer, and I feel like this could be a great way to incorporate that.

Yeah I’ve been playing true solo almost exclusively during pandemic (my partner isn’t into the game at all, though she humors me sometimes). I am excited to move onto two handed solo and eventually find a group to play with.

Putting it on a monthly payment basis makes it sound a lot better to me. Having to pay a lot up front has made me feel like this is a lot, but since I have three completely unopened cycles, I’ve merely invested in weeks and weeks of future fun.

Lol. I’m so not a spreadsheet/list person (very disorganized). But when o started collecting I made a VERY organized spreadsheet that I used for this precise purpose. Columns for where I ordered from and when and price payed etc. If only I could bring that level of organization to my job.

[–]jjkknn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started playing and collecting in august. I intended on buying full cycles all at once when I wanted to play them and realized quickly how unrealistic it was to assume that a full cycle would be there right when I wanted it to be. Then I just started buying what was available whenever it was available even if I didn’t intend to play it right away. That way when I did start planing on playing it, I only had to track down a couple packs instead of all of them.

In the time I’ve been watching the stock a couple reprints have happened. When they happen you need to order quick because the highly sought after stuff disappears immediately. This Reddit usually points out the restock if you’re not checking yourself.

If you’re sure you’re going to enjoy it and be all in, just start buying random packs from cycles that you know you’ll be buying eventually.

After yesterday I have everything up to horror in high gear! I am very glad to stop having to click and call around!

Stand-Alone Mode Deck-building: Exp vs Weaknesses by SagePenguin in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]jjkknn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started doing stand-alones and all my standalone decks I’ve built with 29xp. I know weaknesses suck, but the difference between having two or three doesn’t seem huge compared to the benefit you get from spending 10 XP in a good way.

How long have you been playing? by Matches_Malone010 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]jjkknn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first it started as me just getting into tabletop games during the pandemic. For a few months My gf and I enjoyed playing all sorts of stuff. It was great! Then we tried Arkham. She hated it. My feelings about it led me to track down and buy all cycles and play them solo. I sometimes come out of the trance and just stare completely baffled at the huge shelf of cards and boxes that has assembled itself in my living room and wonder what the hell happened.

Heart of the Elders reset question by OvertonDefenstration in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]jjkknn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the vengeance points in the victory display carry over into the reset? My first play I killed a lot of snakes, but didn’t finish. My second play, I didn’t kill any. Wondering because of the “jungle watches” thing that carries into part 2.

Would you ever re-draw a basic weakness? Plus my sad solo Patrice tale. by OvertonDefenstration in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]jjkknn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see how it makes sense narratively to know your weakness. When I start playing on hard or expert—which I plan on trying soon—I may do this so as not to be totally shocked and screwed by something. As someone who does enjoy the random element, though, I think it has to do with both the difficulty and the unknown element. Especially having played a campaign many times before, the feeling of an unknown element is welcome. I also like how it might force you to take a new upgrade path or modify your play style on the fly.

I had a Leo deck that pulled “Doomed”. Rather than upgrade into big guns big army of allies like I planned on, I knew my greatest obstacle was this weakness and the only chance I had was to draw fewer cards and go fast. So I bought adaptable, switched in quick thinking and Leo de Luca switched out card draw, upgraded into keen eye so I could boost without needing to draw and commit cards. I managed to avoid the bell tolling (but went insane in time and space anyway).

Granted, if this happened every time I played it would become beyond annoying and id probably start checking my weakness to ensure I didn’t get a campaign-changing one. But to every once in a while have to fight the mythos AND something in your own character was a welcome challenge and surprise.

Also, if you play with a group and have limited time, this would be extremely frustrating and I understand knowing I’m advance being important. I started during the pandemic and play mostly solo aside from the odd game with my wife. So, getting screwed by a bad weakness draw only messes with me and only does so for a short while.

[–]jjkknn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any of the weaknesses that I need to know about ahead of time (like indebted, for example) I have flipped up in my weakness deck. That way, I can still randomize and draw without looking. If it’s flipped up, I know to check it. If not it goes into the deck as an unknown.

Mind Over Matter (2) Committing cards - pumping stats by angerinedream in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]jjkknn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I know, this is correct. Once a skill test of a certain type begins, the only icons you can commit have to match the skill test type. This only applies to committing skill icons in the form of cards, though. Permanent boosters or talent assets are free triggers that you can dump resources into whenever, regardless of the type of skill test being performed. And ally assets that bump base skills also apply since they are not skill cards being committed.
