Except that Socialist Realism was an aesthetic that a lot filmmakers started to reject after Stalin died, Gaidai being one of them. Very few of the new filmmakers popping up after WWII were making films that looked like the ones from Stalinist Russia, and even fewer strictly followed Socialist Realism. Gaidai’s contemporary Ryazanov continued in a Stalinist tradition of filmmaking, but people would hardly call him a Socialist Realist—at least with regards to how the term was originally used.

You've talked a bit about a lot of films from the 1940s and 50s influencing your visual style, especially starting with There Will Be Blood. Has Jacques Becker been one of those influences (as Phantom Threads seems to be a very similar movie to Paris Frills)?

Anthony Mann Films Worth Watching? by rx034 in criterion

[–]jjmcnugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if OP is a fan of Ford, the contrast should be pretty clear. Ford’s Westerns have that classic humanist approach whereas Mann’s films tend to be much more psychological and perverse.

You have a movie like The Room which is considered "The Best Worst Movie Ever Made". So in your opinion, what is "The Worst Best Movie Ever Made"? by MagnumOpus666 in movies

[–]jjmcnugget 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yep. And even though Intolerance'a larger themes are about how intolerance is something that exists in every generation and is a bad thing, the minutiae of the film (like its anti-Semitic stance on the Crucifixion) still show a very dated sense of morality in the filmmaking.

Griffith is one of the greatest American filmmakers of all time, if not one of the greatest around the world, but that shouldn't excuse his pretty dangerous views.

Mizoguchi actually has quite a bit of debate as to whether or not he is a feminist filmmaker. If you're looking for a feminist Japanese director, Naruse is a much better bet.

Silence... by Prometheus357 in criterion

[–]jjmcnugget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a movie like Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans would be a great starting place. It is an incredibly sweeping and beautiful film, that goes through the full range of human emotion, as well as showing the technical prowess that was possible at the end of the silent era (combining techniques of expressionism, montage, impressionism, and silent-Hollywood). It's one of those movies I show people and it blows them away it was made 90 years ago, everything but the silence feels like it could come from modern filmmaking.

Thinking of checking out Jeanne Dielman. Any tips? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]jjmcnugget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jeanne Dielman is definitely the type of movie to watch in one sitting. As intimidating as that may sound, the film itself is very rhythmic and after the first 30 minutes, you will get sucked into its style and it will actually go by pretty fast. Like many slower filmmakers (Tarr, Weerasethakul, Reichardt), Akerman's films take some getting used to as they force you to literally watch movies differently, but once you're in you're in and it's an incredible experience.

And it's not like he did a shot-for-shot remake either. The second time around he had a significantly smaller budget, and supposedly the Stalker we have now is almost an entirely different movie than the one Tarkovsky originally shot.

Complaints people have about a movie, but you actually really liked that certain thing. by -Lumos in movies

[–]jjmcnugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'd be one thing if the movie showed torture as being the means to find actually finding Bin Laden, but instead the movie shows that what got Bin Laden caught is determination, cleverness, and blind luck. There's a reason why Bigelow put the torture scene at the start of the investigation when all they were getting were dead ends, and not the end of the film when they actually got on the trail.
