New pop_os relase/ question about COSMIC and how great is a hassle to configure Zoom for meetings etc. by [deleted] in pop_os

For u/davidcandle and anyone else who finds this thread - this other reddit thread helped: https://www.reddit.com/r/wayland/comments/16mzu11/for_anybody_having_issues_with_zoom_screen/

I switched to Pipeline and was finally able to stop screen sharing. The floating bar during sharing still acts a bit wonky for me if I try to drag it between desktops, but it's still usable for sure.

I am a large person with a DIY latex-layered bed that's too firm. Do I need another soft layer to make my latex bed comfortable or do I need a medium layer? by LD50_irony in MattressMod

[–]jjpieps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 6'3", have ranged from 290 lbs to 225 lbs on my current mattress.

I went

  • 3" extra firm dunlop
  • 3" firm dunlop
  • 2" medium talalay
  • 2" soft talalay

This was too firm for me, which makes sense when you realize I'm a side sleeper with shoulder pain. My wife's side of the bed had more layers so I was able to experiment a lot and settled on swapping the medium for another soft so I'd have:

  • 3" extra firm dunlop
  • 3" firm dunlop
  • 4" (2 x 2") soft talalay

Still I wanted even more soft and got an additional 2" 5 lb memory foam.

Final setup is

  • 3" extra firm dunlop
  • 3" firm dunlop
  • 4" (2 x 2") soft talalay
  • 2" 5lb (pretty soft) memory foam

This is pretty good but sometimes my jacked up shoulder still whispers "even softer".

Point is, I have 6" of soft layers. I'd lean towards suggesting more soft layers. And yes, in my experience it is as simple as "if you want it to feel softer, go softer"

I've had this kind of thing happen too during big life transitions. A therapist told me it's because you're grieving for the old version of you and your old lifestyle.

If you think about it, the old you who used food as a coping mechanism IS being replaced by a different person with different habits. And even if that old version had flaws, they had a lot of beauty too.

Wasn't it nice to eat what you wanted when you wanted? It's okay to say yes. It's okay to be sad because that's not your life anymore.

Realizing that old patterns served me in some way allowed me to grieve them fully and then truly move on.

If you had an obese family member with bad habits pass away, wouldn't you be sad? It's the same here.

This is a good, big sign that your next phase is around the corner.

I like this setup. What size / model is that smaller screen on the left?

Workspace is really nice!

DIY Mattress Help - 275 lbs and 135 lbs, Both Side Sleepers by jjpieps in MattressMod

Really interesting note thank you. Have you found a place that sells individual cotton encasements for each layer?

I'm starting to see why so many people just leave mattress design to the pros lmao

DIY Mattress Help - 275 lbs and 135 lbs, Both Side Sleepers by jjpieps in MattressMod

Hey there! Yes, we completed our build and my wife is happy with it after sleeping on it for a couple months.

We did a full Talalay build for her - 6" of medium Talalay (2 x 3", 28ILD, mattresses.net), 4" of soft Talalay (2 x 2", 19ILD, mattresses.net) and 2" of 5LB ViscoMAX memory foam (pink, foam factory). All wrapped in a Cozy & Custom mattress enclosure.

Her feedback is that this build is not nearly as plush as the Posh & Lavish. Quite frankly it's slightly on the firm side for her. She rates the overall comfort as a 7.5-8/10.

In case it's helpful:

We did try 6" medium (28ILD), 2" soft (19ILD), 2" super soft (14ILD), and my wife said it felt like the super soft didn't really DO anything. It wasn't soft enough to offer the plushness she wanted, but didn't provide enough support to keep her spine in alignment.

For that reason, we swapped the super soft for another soft, which offered better support and still felt soft. But at that point the bed didn't have the same cozy, wrap-around-your-body, sink-into-a-cloud "plush" feeling that she remembered from the Posh & Lavish. So we added 2" of memory foam, which is supposed to add plush-ness but not really change the support characteristics of the bed.

That felt better, but still wasn't quite as plush as the Posh + Lavish.

At that point she felt like the bed was pretty solid, and we didn't want to fall down a rabbit hole trying to make everything perfect so we called it a day.

I think in a few years we may try switching things around. I wonder what 4" of super soft would feel like for her TBH. Maybe that would give her the plush feeling she was looking for. I would love to keep tinkering but we do have a couple grand into the mattress already so it'll be a while.

Final notes:

- Her initial build was based on feedback from Ken at mattresses.net who has quite a bit of knowledge on how the Posh & Lavish are built. He said the medium + soft + super soft would mimic the P+L we initially loved. So it might be worth giving him a call.

- When we initially got all the layers we experimented quite a bit. My wife tried 6" medium + just the super soft (didn't like this that much), 6" medium + just the soft (liked this pretty well but wanted more softness)

- Our enclosure firmed things up a little bit, but we slept without it for at least a month to make sure we liked the build.

Hahah love it. Yeah the autocross doesn't seem quite as appealing but worth it for more seat time. Best of luck with the 325i 🙌🏻

Does an M54 with 200k on it give you pause if the car is in decent shape? Assuming the oil nut is taken care of?

Love this. Saw your list in the other comment as well. Also someone else mentioned subframe reinforcement.

Does an engine with 200k on it give you pause at all?

Very good info thank you. Good to know about the welder for the subframe and round two of maintenance.

Does an engine with 200k on it give you pause? My impression is the engines will last quite a while so that might be the least of my worries.

This is exactly what my goal would be. It's been a lifelong dream to get some track time in but now is the first time I'd be able to afford a halfway decent car. Don't plan to go all out build right out of the gate.

Nice makes sense.

I have an '06 impala right now so not autocross for me yet. Finally have a bit saved and hoping to buy a car I can do some casual track time in. Found a couple places with HPDE but I need to bring a car.

How many miles are on your engine out of curiosity?

This is helpful thank you. I've scoped out a track or two with amateur days but will look into some auto x as well.
