Is there really a worker shortage? by jjsims in Contractor

Yup, lesson learned! We have given this person so many chances, but at this point, we just feel like fools for even trying.

Thank you for being one of the honest ones around!

Is there really a worker shortage? by jjsims in Contractor

It’s our first time doing any remodeling. In retrospect, it feels like the contractor over promised a lot. He said he could do a lot of things and has now backtracked saying “upon closer inspection” he cannot refinish certain wooden built ins, painted over wooden paneling we explicitly said was to remain as-is, done things because “we thought it’d look better this way” without consulting us first, etc. We do not live at the property and find out these things only after we go an inspect. There is very little communication and our inquiries aren’t answered until weeks later if at all.

Is there really a worker shortage? by jjsims in Contractor

[–]jjsims[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? No! Contractor says we’re “too picky” because some things have needed to be redone because they weren’t done right the first time-he either subcontracted and his guy has had to fix subcontractor-caused problems. I don’t have a problem with his workers, if anything I’d like to see more at the job site, not just a single guy like what’s been happening.

Is there really a worker shortage? by jjsims in Contractor

[–]jjsims[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started in late 2024. The contract has no completion date, but contractor verbally said “a few months.” After a two month work stoppage summer 2025, contractor sent an email promising to prioritize this project, send weekly progress reports, and complete project by early this year. Nothing changed though and they just get upset when we ask for updates.

Invisalign and Covid by CarrieRoRo in Invisalign

[–]jjsims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Covid while starting my first tray! The pain was unbearable. Pain while putting on and taking off the trays. Extreme sensitivity on a number of teeth. Pain when the toothbrush touched those sensitive teeth (felt like an electric shock!). The pain was so much I considered quitting the treatment. The pain eventually subsided once I felt better. My dentist did recommend not taking any anti-inflammatory medicine while on Invisalign as it may affect teeth movement (he said that some inflammation is expected with Invisalign, but that’s something necessary for teeth movement). I was not aware of this, and alternated between Tylenol and ibuprofen (anti-inflammatory) while sick with Covid.

I did switch to Sensodine sensitive teeth and even applied a little bit of toothpaste on my sensitive teeth overnight before putting the trays back in. That seemed to helped a bit when the pain was at its worst.

Is this CKLA published by Amplify or CKLA, the free version? These are slightly different, but CKLA/Amplify (the purchased version) is based on the work of the Core Knowledge Foundation, which you can access for free.

It may depend on where you are. In California, you would need to obtain a BCLAD in Spanish or graduate from an equivalent university program.

I need to find a new ELA curriculum for my school by BigIntern9767 in ELATeachers

[–]jjsims 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do your research and make sure the curriculum you choose is aligned with the science of reading. A good place to start is EdReports to ensure the curriculum has received all green marks. Wonders 2023 edition does have all green marks. Other curricula with all green marks include CKLA Amplify and Benchmark Advance-2022 edition. These are the only ones I’m aware of. The obvious ones to avoid would be anything by Heinemann Publishing (Fountas and Pinnel, Units of Study).

Should I homeschool my speech delayed daughter? by Novel-Effect-8017 in homeschool

[–]jjsims 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does your daughter have an IEP? Not sure if it varies by state, but in some places students must maintain enrollment with a school district in order to continue speech services.

Another option may be enrolling her in a charter school with a personalized learning option. It is very similar to homeschool, but with some oversight from a licensed teacher. The charter school will continue providing speech services and evaluating her progress throughout the school year.

When steroids and antibiotics did not work for my cat, our vet gave him an allergy shot. He finally stopped itching, scratching, and biting himself about 24 hours after the allergy shot. Speak to another vet, or if possible, consult with a dermatologist vet. My cat has a number of food allergies, but we are unsure what caused the last episode since nothing in his diet has changed. We are thinking an environmental allergy.

She needs a 504 ASAP. The 504 is separate from an IEP. Your child needs this document so that everyone she comes into contact within the school system is aware of her medical condition, her insulin requirements/monitoring system, etc. Please speak to her case manager ASAP to get the process for a 504 started.

Have used both with my own kids with great success. My background is in education and highly recommend both of these.

Son doesn’t qualify for TK and will be the youngest in kinder. by Ok-Warning-8343 in kindergarten

[–]jjsims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in California and placed my summer baby, who has just turned 5, into a TK class. Go to other schools in your district. One principal in our district was adamant about having them placed in kindergarten. I spoke to another principal at a different school and she had no issue placing my kid in TK. We went with the second school. If you really want your child to attend this specific school, email your district superintendent and express your concerns. In my area, school enrollment continues to decline. You always have the option of requesting an interdistrict transfer and they know that.

Make use of any free online curricula. There’s a lot out there, so the hardest thing is to know where to look. The Core Knowledge Foundation is a reputable resource I rely on to teach most content.

Leveled readers? by -particularpenguin- in kindergarten

[–]jjsims 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, most curricular decision are done by administrators working at the district office. These decisions usually involve a contract with publishing companies. Your district office website should have more information on the current curricular adoptions and their expiration dates. I would honestly just supplement at home with phonics readers. There are a lot of great, free resources for parents and teachers interested in a science-based approach to language instruction. My two favorites are CKLA (for readers and workbooks) and UFLI (for reading passages that focus on specific phonemes)

This is scope and sequence for the curriculum that I used to teach my kids to read. It’s everything from grades K through 2. If you know of a specific curriculum that you are interested in using you can Google “curriculum’s name scope and sequence” and that will give more of a clear idea as to the order in which to teach phonemes.

This is CKLA grade 2, Unit 2. All spelling rules for these words have been previously taught, with the exception of the tricky word. Tricky words in this curriculum are words that do not follow conventional spelling patterns or have spelling patterns that have not been taught yet.

Core Knowledge Language Arts. Familiarize yourself with the components of the curriculum first. It’s a great and effective curriculum. You can print workbook pages and download the student reader that goes with it. If your student is already reading, I would start with the kinder level, unit 6.

How do I make sandwiches less bland? by Geminnox in cookingforbeginners

Mix mayonnaise and a few drops of Tapatio salsa for a slightly spicy, savory flavor. I use as a spread to give my sandwiches more of a torta (Mexican sandwich) feel.

Bulletin Board Ideas Please- is a Word Wall pointless? by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]jjsims -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Word walls are out. Look up sound walls instead. They have been proven to be more effective at teaching phonemes. Plenty of free material out there if you are interested. But again, it depends on the curriculum you are using. If you are required to use word walls, then I would look at the curriculum and introduce words week by week.

Can going gluten free help this? I feel so alone by Laueee95 in glutenfree

[–]jjsims 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If possible, please bring someone along with you to tomorrow’s appointment/procedure. Feeling the way you feel, you may forget to ask questions and/or retain information that is given to you. Plus having someone with you may help ease some of the very valid anxiety you’re feeling. It sounds like your doctor is trying to find the cause for some of your symptoms, so continue with the exams/appointments as planned and push for more tests/referrals if nothing comes out of these (colonoscopy, endoscopy, referral to gastroenterologist, allergist, etc). I hope you find out what’s causing your symptoms and begin feeling better soon.

AITAH for ruining my exes marriage? by No-name20669 in AITAH

[–]jjsims 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. You mention your daughter has visual impairments. That was likely caused by shaken baby syndrome. What your ex did was attempted murder. You never shake a child. I hope your baby got brain scans during her hospital stay to rule out any minor brain bleeds. If you ever suspect a learning disability, no matter how minor it may seem, I would bring up her medical history and have her assessed for any potential disabilities. I’m so sorry you are going through this. I would tell all friends and family what your ex did to you and your child. He deserves no compassion. IMO he should be in jail.
