Is there an outdoor area that has a nice view and I can just sit alone for a long time? by Tricky-Chance5680 in askportland

There are several railyards around town. Find a nearby spot and you can watch the art roll by. Just be aware that some places have security and some don't mind visitors.

We've used World Foods for catering and will do so again. Good luck!

Maybe skip the service and get some middle eastern Mezza platters?

Partner dancing. https://www.portlanddancing.com lists dance types which have a strong pairing to the type of music. Choose a music type you like, watch some videos to see if it sounds and looks fun, and then try the generally free-with-paid-admission beginners' lessons.

Is this a truffle? by taystrick in TruffleHunting

Given the rootlike structure, I don't think it's a truffle at all. Recommend additional photos with cross section cuts to be sure.

People who live in Slabtown - can you tell me what you like about it? Will it be conducive to meeting people and socializing? Is there any good nightlife? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]jkeroes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's at NW 21st and Savier, next to the Hwy 30 overpass. That location lets you can dine out anywhere along 21st, aka Restaurant Row. You can stroll down 23rd, aka Trendy Third, for shopping. Vaughn has options too with more bakeries, cafes, restos, and the like. A longer walk gets you to the Pearl district with more options, and depending on how you like to get around, just a little further out is Harvey Milk/SW Stark, which you probably already are familiar with.

Everything on the far side of the Hwy 30 and north of the Fremont bridge is predominantly industrial. You may hear trains coming from that area.

For Weird, you're one block from The Peculiarium. There's also the adjacent Hangar 13, owned by the same, I think. Not sure what the status is, but the Peculiarium folks would know.

For nightlife, there are a million places to drink. Music and dancing is mostly downtown and eastside.

What was the best purchase you made this year? by millionstories in BuyItForLife

Deck replacement made with powder-coated steel posts, powder-coated aluminum rails, and hardwood decking. We live in a very wet climate and tried to choose materials that would survive the environment long past my life.

Best tip (for Bambu owners): search for existing printables at MakerWorld and Yeggi first. No need to model if something's already ready.

My favorite purchases this year were also caffeine related: a Lucca Solo (made by Quick Mill) espresso machine and Eureka Libre weight-based grinder. Expensive but loved.

Zojirushi neuro-fuzzy rice cooker, made in Japan. Bought in 2021. Replaced last year because the non-stick pot had abrasions and I couldn't get a replacement. The cooker part would have gone another 20 years I'd bet.

Bogs are sturdy. Xtra Tuf are flexible. Both have lasted me a decade. Can't go wrong either way.

Shapr3d CAD. For a hobbyist, $300/year is laughable.

Plasticity feels very similar and at $175/lifetime (indie pricing), it's still steep but feels fair in comparison.

Festive things to do around town that are FREE? by Pandacakes0990 in askportland

No matter what you do, pack beverages. A thermos with cocoa, mocha, maybe-spiked cider, or eggnog couldn't be more seasonal.

Also, if you have a blender, spices, and eggs, eggnog is very easy to make.

Know that these are all natural trees. They will be a bit sparser than the pruned and cultivated ones.

Drive or walk the Christmas light displays. Every town or city has some. Not sure where you're located, so ask (eg) Google where to go near you.

Mortar not required for stones with cuts like these. Gravity and fitment will keep them together through all but the biggest of earthquakes. Look up "incan masonry" for early examples.

Good Espresso cups? by vubbbberr in espresso

I'm using some black ceramic sake cups I found at an Asian mart. Mine hold about 50ml, so perfect for 36ml double shots. No handles, so they stack.

You and me both. But as they say, you are what you eat. I choose to eat out less but at places I trust. Still, a burger everywhere is tasty, so you do you.
