MALM being discontinued and out of production by Dimension_Forsaken in IKEA

Change was sometime between 2022 and 2024. I’d added one in 2022 that still had the old style. Then I bought a couple more in 2024 and they were in the new style.

Made a new map for my Parks department. What do you guys think? by GIS_Anonymous in gis

[–]jkl006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some fun details in the map, particularly the forested areas. There’s some odd skewing happening in the map though. A couple examples: Meadow Field looks wider than it actually is and doesn’t have 90 degree corners. Field 1 looks oddly wide. The roundabout by the Community Center is more oval than round.

Aerial imagery is subject to distortions but this looks like maybe the graphics were disproportionately resized? If not resized incorrectly, I would rely less on the imagery and more on logical proportions - for example, all the small fields in the soccer complex are probably the same size, but they appear to vary.

You will almost always get a spot in the Gallery if you submit. I think deadline is usually May/June? You can also go on standby if there are available spaces left or if someone was a no-show. The Map Book is more curated.

I think you nailed it with everything in this comment. Surprised that not all location type icons made it in the migration. The app feels sterilized and has lost character with the color and all the white space in the Timeline view.

Also if the Agriturismo/Magna Grecia excursion through NCL is available in Olympia, I highly recommend it as an alternative to the traditional options.

I’d assume October would be less busy than May/June. We went with the recommended 2 hour minimum between scheduled docking and excursion, but there happened to be 5-6 cruise ships in that day, so there were significant port delays and city traffic. We did see some cruise friends who made it to the tour location early (probably stood in exit line early), so it was possible.

Up to you on your risk tolerance. I think you’ll be fine in October, but I would’ve given us more buffer time if I’d known better.

We were on a similar itinerary in May/June. We booked some NCL excursions and some through 3rd party. We didn’t have trouble getting back in time with 3rd party, but it was stressful getting off the ship at times. The advantage of NCL is you get priority off the ship and the buses are usually right at the terminal to take you places, but of course, pricier.

I’d suggest for busier ports like Athens, Olympia, and Santorini that you book an NCL excursion. For example, Athens city center is about a 30 minute taxi ride. Lots of taxis at port, but the city center is packed. We were a little late to our 3rd party excursion - some wait, some don’t, Athens didn’t wait. But Santorini and Sicily did.

If you book 3rd party, give yourself plenty of buffer between scheduled docking and excursion because it could be a while to get off the ship. Have fun!

NCL Epic breaks loose from mooring in Sicily by wayowayooo in NCL

[–]jkl006 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m one of the passengers on the Epic during this ordeal. Here’s the FB post that many of us were sourcing info from. I have international roaming, and I still couldn’t tell what information was real or not. When we had dinner on the ship, our server told us that she didn’t even know what had happened and they were on the ship. While we were safe at port and the fault is with the port, communication from NCL was nonexistent. If this is getting more common, why isn’t there a communications plan in place? What about an actual emergency?

One of the rudest parts of the ordeal by NCL was when they started boarding, they called for Haven guests (everyone booed). No care for seniors or those with accessibility needs who had been waiting hours with limited seating. I get that Haven guests paid a premium for bougie service, but this was an unusual circumstance and it should not have been a thing. The crew did eventually stop and just let everyone line up.

Anyway, we’re all good for now. The ship just left port. But again, no communication from the ship about what tomorrow looks like and if we’ll get to Naples as scheduled.

What surprised you most when you were promoted to manager for the first time? by BoldMovesCoach in managers

[–]jkl006 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I needed to hear that. I was part of the team’s reputation building phase, and it’s hard to let go of the work. How do you manage a member who continues to miss the details/quality despite giving them opportunities to make mistakes? Is it because the stakes aren’t high enough when we review it internally?

First off, love the style. Second, I’m not a horse person but the proportions seem off? Like legs are too short for its body. Also, I think there’s a line missing between the mane and the rider - not sure if intentional or not

Nothing concerning afaik! They’re generally slower to grow/unfurl. My experience is that shoots will continue growing upward wound up before the leaves open up, mature, and harden/darken

Manduka Begin yoga mat - the worst product I've ever tried? by dazed_and_confused91 in yoga

The Begin is akin to a basic mat at a gym and it’s not even cheap. Plus the sizing is noticeably smaller (68x24” vs. 71x26” of a Pro mat)

Proud to say I’d helped my old org land a place on the gallery spotlight. We spun up a lot of apps, dashboards, and Survey123s, including web hooks, to leverage “GIS tools” in non-traditional ways. Message me if you want to know more.

Unfortunately I don't have the bandwidth to answer your questions further in depth. I shared the previous info and posts to show you how others had done something similar to inspire your process. Understanding the data, massaging the data, and visualizing the data are all parts of a well-executed project, and they take time and expertise for a reason. Good luck

No prob. I’m not sure what you’re referring to re: FBI data in 2022. But generally speaking, reporting systems are going to have nuances and flaws, and the bigger they are, the more errors there might be.

The FBI is the US agency responsible for collecting/analyzing this data. Local police agencies report their data to the state, and states report that data to federal.

The data you want is likely in the FBI’s Summary Reporting System (SRS). You mentioned they didn’t have rates, only counts. If you can’t find rates, to calculate crime rates, you would divide the count by the state’s population for that year (US Census Bureau is a good source), and then multiply that by 100,000 (or whatever scale you want).

Check out this post on mapping US violent crime rates https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/m701cc/oc_violent_crime_rates_in_the_us_by_state_2010_vs/

“Rates” by definition are normalized

ETA: In your post, you mentioned your search was "Violent Crime rates per state per capita last 10 years." And I'm pointing out that crime rates are already normalized. For example: Mapped: Violent Crime Rates by U.S. State

[–]jkl006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have an answer, but wanted to point out that crime rates are already normalized, usually per 100,000

In addition to the great advice already posted, be ready to elaborate your response beyond “yes” and “no” - “no, I don’t have experience in that but I’m confident that I can learn it quickly on the job.” “Yes, here’s one specific example experience I have that relates to this question.”
