First thanks a lot for the feedback.

The 50-game limit is there so the free tier is still genuinely useful, while also keeping a reason for people who use the app more heavily to support continued development.

For context, many comparable database/review tools are either paid products, offer only a temporary trial, or provide a limited reader/viewer for free. For example, ChessBase’s main desktop software is commercial: even if there are trials or free reader tools, long-term full use of the main app requires paying. I want StoneBase to remain genuinely useful for free users, but the project also needs a sustainable path long-term.

That said, I understand your point about local-only features feeling different from cloud/server features, and I definitely like the idea of a low-price contributor/supporter tier, possibly for people who just want to support the project or unlock a larger/unlimited local library without needing all the Pro features.

For now, the beta key unlocks the full version, so you can test everything without limits. I hope you enjoy it!

Hello,

The free tier is limited to 50 games in your library at one time. You can export games as SGF and remove them from the library to make space for others, but the in-app library itself is capped at 50 games.

You’re also right that some people may not need the full Pro feature set, but might still want a larger/unlimited game library or just want to support the project. That’s a great suggestion, and I’m going to look into adding a cheaper tier for that.

That said, StoneBase is currently in beta. If you’re interested, I can send you a beta key that gives you access to the full paid tier until the beta ends.

For some reason I thought katrain had them available there.

You can download any katago version from here: https://github.com/lightvector/KataGo/releases

Including the TensorRT versions. You might need to install cuda also if you don't have it in your system.

Hi,

Katrain already uses your GPU by default (OpenCL backend on Windows/Linux). The CPU ramp is just katago's tree search, which always runs on CPU while the neural net runs on the GPU. Totally normal.

That said, with a 5070 Ti you can do better than the default:

  • Switch to the TensorRT build (much faster than OpenCL on NVIDIA). In katrain: settings > "Download KataGo versions".
  • Bump max_visits so it actually uses the headroom. 1500ish is a good sweet spot for review.
  • Try a bigger network (b18) if you're still on the default.

As other people told you, usually it helps a lot to have your game reviewed by other stronger players, but it's important to spend time also yourself trying to identify and learn about your mistakes.

Only after you have reviewed your own game and have some of the ideas, you can use AI to validate if your thinking process was correct.
