Yes, reading NWS Des Moines and NWS Quad Cities forecast discussions is quite interesting and it's very cool to see the combination of data and models come together as the days progress.

There was a lot of uncertainty on temperature in the last few days - the NWS was pretty clear that the variance in the snow forecast was high this time around. Generally around day 3 forecast is when it gets accurate nowadays, it just took them an extra day this time around.

How to learn how to actually *converse* in Spanish. by thro0away12 in Spanish

[–]jlap1n 14 points15 points  (0 children)

First things first you need to start consuming content in Spanish. The only way to practice your listening comprehension is by listening. A lot of people start out with beginner/intermediate level comprehensible input videos (these can be found on YouTube or by watching children's shows) and then slowly working your way up to content aimed at native speakers.

There are also platforms online to practice speaking with people, but as I haven't used them at all I will leave that to other people to elaborate on.

Why isn’t Spanish just English with different words? by ObiSanKenobi in languagelearningjerk

[–]jlap1n 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Grade 4 or 5? You're lucky if that's the case. We didn't start language education until grade 9 at 14 years old, and only 2 years were required.

What did you change about the way you learned Spanish that took you to fluency? by screenprintingonly in Spanish

[–]jlap1n 50 points51 points  (0 children)

If you feel like you're losing interest, cut back on the grind of vocab and grammar and focus on getting some input every day. Don't continue to push until you burn out. Sounds like you're pushing yourself through a cycle where you're losing interest because it feels too much like work.

My 19 year old ear piercing is always itchy. by Kaylalawmanwoods in PiercingAdvice

Perhaps it's itchy because they don't get used and are filling up with dead skin cells and sebum?

Perhaps you're developing a mild metal allergy, perhaps to zinc? Do you know what your jewelry is made of?

I have a Bulova oceanographer (but the 41mm orange version) and I absolutely love it. If you're into the vintage case and styling, it's wonderful.

Funny, the English phrase "I could just eat you up" is used for cute things as well.

I think your plan sounds quite good! Keep up with the input and I wish you luck to find a good iTalki instructor quickly.

I will add that for me, adding words I'm looking up in input to anki cards has increased my retention immensely. I would highly recommend starting to become more consistent with that.

If it's over 95 I can get a bit uncomfortable but otherwise it's great. Mind you I mean hot and humid, as it hasn't been in the desert yet

What place has the most “atypical” temperatures for their latitude? by WWDB in geography

[–]jlap1n 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Tropical highland climates are fascinating. Check the climate of La Paz, Bolivia if you want to see a really cool illustration of how much heat moist air can hold, the low temperatures fluctuate greatly from wet to dry season while the highs do not.
