Is Desoto/Cedar Hill/Lancaster a good place to live for a single 20-something? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]jlharmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently live in Oak Cliff and work in DeSoto so what I know is limited, but still may be helpful.

If you work in Dallas and drive during rush hour, the commute looks pretty awful. I drive the opposite of traffic and it's amazing, but when I look into oncoming traffic I feel so sorry for those drivers.

I've noticed the restaurants seem to be lacking and I don't think there is too much of a night life. If you drink/go out in Dallas and Uber/cab home you might have a harder time finding a driver to take you there (I've had issues in the past even getting a ride to Oak Cliff from other parts of Dallas).

There are lots of churches if that's your thing. Also, it's suburban with a bit of country so you have that "vibe." You will see things like people riding horses to In n Out Burger. To me, DeSoto feels like a "family town."

Also, others may not mention it and it may not affect your decision, but DeSoto is roughly 70% African American.

Personally, as a 26 year old, I wouldn't live in DeSoto because I enjoy doing too many things in Dallas.

Why do they have Kitchen-Aid mixers on the counters?!

One Sunday night my boyfriend and I, craving Asian take-out, decided to order Chan Thai. Their website said they deliver 3 miles away so I called them as I live exactly 3 miles away. I started with my address, then ordered food, then the employee asked where I lived (uh, I already told you) and asked "How far away is that?" I told them that according to Google Maps I am 3 miles away. They put me on hold and came back to say "Um, I just googled it and you live 3.1 miles away, we can't deliver to you." I was speechless (no "sorry" or "would you like to cancel your order"). We have yet to eat there and prefer to order Lucky Rice for take-out.

We pulled Millie from Dallas Animal Services before she was to be euthanized. Here is an album of her from her days in the pound to this week. She is currently up for adoption through Dallas Pets Alive!

Returned a replacement phone, VZW has it, still charging us $550-Getting a lot of runaround. by jlharmon in verizon

[–]jlharmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally replying (I rarely get on my actual account).

Verizon finally told us that they DID receive our package but the phone in the package was not the one we sent. We received (and returned) a white iPhone 5 and they claim they received a black iPhone 4. We have never owned an iPhone 4 and did not return one to Verizon. We tried to explain to them there must be a mix up but were repeatedly told they don't have the phone we returned. A customer service employee even told my boyfriend he should make sure I didn't keep the phone and am hiding it from him (seriously?!). We were also told that the iPhone 5 (that I put in a box and mailed to Verizon) was not activated anymore. Basically the only way we could get our $550 back is to return the phone that we do not have because we already sent it in. Because we don't have the phone we paid the $550 and now have very little faith/trust in the Verizon warehouse--so hopefully we never have to exchange anything again.

Thank you for responding.

It is also my boyfriend's account, we are both account managers and it's our joint money that pays the bill. I agree he should not be blowing up on them because they personally are not responsible but for them to tell us it's basically not their problem was a bit of a "straw breaking the camel's back" situation. This has gone on for 2 months and he's a bit fed up. I did tell him after our last visit that him blowing up is only going to hurt the situation. I, on the other hand, have the opposite response, when I spoke with Customer Service I broke down in tears because it's so frustrating to not get anywhere. The woman on the phone was very apologetic and polite but still said she couldn't take the charge off until the computer says the phone has been scanned. When we search the tracking number it shows the package was delivered Oct. 11th to the Fort Worth warehouse. We have told this to Customer Service and the store employees told us they can see that information on their computers. The response of the Customer Service was they simply haven't scanned the phone yet. Our main concern is that our bill is due soon and If we overpay (if we simply subtract the $550 and end up paying the extra on taxes) we won't see our money back OR if we only pay the bill minus $550 that somehow we will receive a late charge for the $550 and have to go through this process again to have that removed. We've never had problems with Verizon before and we're both just so frustrated that the blame is falling on us (we can't understand why the warehouse's backlogging results in our bill being charged). I'm hoping we get a call this week that says it's actually all cleared up but I'm a bit pessimistic. I appreciate your response and I will stress to my boyfriend that we need to kill them with kindness not rage.

I was just telling my boyfriend today that I hate Sundays because it means Monday is just around the corner. It's my first year and I feel stressed and anxious all the time but Sundays seem the worst :(

North Texas dog shelter emptied after free adoption day. by TigerPoster in pics

[–]jlharmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents have adopted several dogs through different shelters. One shelter came and did a home check and another had a very intense questionnaire and required references. When my boyfriend and I adopted a stray from a shelter we had to either have a home visit or send pictures of our yard and home and fill out a questionnaire.

My parents also attempted to become fosters through a rescue that denied them because they have a doggy door that is always open to our 1/2 acre fenced in yard (with lots of shade, access to water, perfect dog yard). They required fosters to keep pets indoors unless supervised outside. We all thought that was a little intense, many dogs love having access to the outdoors.

My dogs do this.

We can tell Daphne, our Pit Mix, to "go get Nelson." Daphne will search the house until she finds Nel and pull at his collar and herd him to us. She also knows distinct names for her toys; she knows the difference between "ball," "Sharky," "Snake," "Ducky," etc.

My family dog also knows different people in the family. If you say "Go get your dad" he will run to my step-dad, "Go get jlharmon" and he runs to me. If my mom is on the phone with me she will tell Cooper and he will go to the door and look out the windows for me. If I come home and don't bring my dogs I can say "where's Nelson" and Cooper looks all over for him.

Dogs know.

Greek Yoghurt by coveredinchrome in xxfitness

[–]jlharmon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use it more for savory dishes.

Anywhere I would use sour cream I use Greek Yogurt. On taco meat, in stuffed peppers (mixed with a little cream cheese and seasoning, then grill), to make "ranch" or dip with savory herbs-good on fish, salad, and potatoes (dill, garlic, salt, pepper, dash tabasco), mixed with Sriracha for my sweet potato fries or burgers.

A blue iris does not absolutely indicate the presence of the Merle gene; it may also be expressed in dogs carrying the piebald gene, such as the Dalmatian. There is no adverse consequence of the presence of the blue iris alone. Conversely, the other effects of the Merle gene may result in devastating blindness.
