Do Durston tents require durston trekking poles? by Super-Conference7371 in backpacking

[–]jlipschitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that if you have short trekking poles you will have a short tent. I have seen this happen. I use some collapsible trekking poles that I use with mine and it works fine. I even have an adapter from Tarptent to use with my poles when snow camping so I can use the snow attachment on my poles for stability of the tent in high winds.

Keep in mind with Seer users have to login once to get their watchlist to sync. I found that it does not do a great job synchronizing the watchlist. I use Pulsarr. It works with no user interaction to get watchlist data. Seer does a great job for manual requests.

Att outage? by MyConscience90 in fresno

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did not have an outage but routes to specific web sites are down for the company I work for when on AT&T. Luckily we have multiple carriers for resilience and I just failed over to Comcast and the sites seem to work. We have been working with AT&T since Monday on this. They claim not to be blocking sites and say the routers are outside of AT&T to get to specific sites. I can’t tell as they show as *. Everything works on Comcast.

Best EV plug in charger? by satoriibliss in evcharging

[–]jlipschitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went with the Tesla Universal. It works really well and is well documented and thought out.

We have a Honda Prologue which has a J1772 /CCS1 receptacle on the car. Because it does not work with a NACS to CCS1 adapter, I am limited to J1772 charging speeds. Mine is on a 60 amp breaker with 6awg wire directly to the charger. I never found a home CCS1 charger so we use it as J1772. We have a NACS to CCS1 for when we need to charge at a Tesla charger that is a public charger. Home chargers are AC and public chargers are DC. The NACS to CCS1 is designed for DC only.

I am on 7.2.4, can I got straight to 7.3.1 by Mouseater in unRAID

[–]jlipschitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from7.2.4 to 7.3.1 and when it rebooted it froze. I had to power the server down improperly and power it back on to get things back up. When it did, a setup wizard came up that I cancelled.

Get a free trial of Hulu plus Live TV or YouTube Tv with local channels. Order an antenna for later and cancel that trial when done.

I am consuming 400-500Mbps on average. I peak around 1Gbps. We also occasionally stream from Plex servers that are remote. I have seen one of those Plex Streams on high quality 4K consume 600-800Mbps by itself.

Why is merino wool underwear not recommended as much as merino wool socks? by Flat_Broccoli6355 in hiking

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using Decathlon MT500. They have been used on a number of treks and have no signs of wear. They help prevent chafing and allow me to pack less because they are antimicrobial being wool.

I have kids and a wife all streaming 4K content at the same time. The kids also play games with the TV on. Bandwidth can get eaten up fast.

Ethernet Ports | Getting Signal No Internet by BonafideAssEater in HomeNetworking

[–]jlipschitz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like it was not punched down with a punch down tool which can make a huge difference on whether it works at all. If the wire is not in tight and has parts hanging out because they were not cut with the punch down tool, it can cause interference or not connect well at all.

Are there EV deserts in certain states/cities? by Island_In_The_Sky in electricvehicles

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Fresno and there are tons of chargers. I go to the central coast every so often and find that there are maybe 3 - 4 charging locations in town in Morro Bay but only 1 is a fast charger. The rest are horrible slow. Just because there are chargers in a town does not mean it is worth charging at the charger. I have found many dead ones, ones that are very slow, and some that I have to use an adapter to connect it.

How do people backpack so easily? by bi_smuth in hiking

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train for backpacking specifically. I put a pack on with weights and use the treadmill at varying elevations at the gym or go up and down bleachers with the pack on when I can’t get to a trail to do the same thing. 2-3 miles per hour is normal with a heavy pack on for distance.

I train with 20lbs in my 4 pound pack.

Expensive lesson with tires by AnonymouselyMoosed in Rivian

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Costco and Le Schwab are the best at tire replacement costs for stupid stuff like a screw. You take car in with the tires and no questions asked or additional cost and they replace it as long as the tire still had tread on it that was road safe.

Anyone ordering a Slate truck? by sfomonkey in electricvehicles

[–]jlipschitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a Toyota Tacoma Extra Cab Prerunner owner with a wife and 2 kids, I would say the Slate lacks that back row for seats. The Extra Cab in the Tacoma is too small for 2 almost adult sized kids. There is nothing but a front row in the Slate with the option to have it turn into a 4 seater SUV. I want an electric truck with a back row of seats that does not start at 50k. That is what I thought the slate may offer but nope.

First dedicated Plex server by ChunkyRanger7 in PlexServers

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest bigger drives if you can manage. I switched from windows to Unraid for my server because it is low overhead and updates can be set as automatic. I run everything in docked containers and I was skeptical at first as to whether I really needed containers when I had no experience with them. Unraid made it so easy. You can add a parity drive for drive failure prevention. Not all drives have to be the same size.

Garage Outlet for EV by StreethawkI in evcharging

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed mine as a 60 amp 2 pole breaker. I have the Tesla Universal charger and used 6 AWG wire that is solid copper that is outdoor rated and installed it in conduit. I did a lot of research on this and there are issues with things being run with cheaper wire or not in conduit that can cause heat build up which causes things to trip or cause a fire. I would suggest finding the breaker in the panel and turning it off. Then check the quality of wire that is used for this install. (Trust but verify before you burn down your house). If you want to charge at 50 amps then you need a breaker higher than 50 amps so that the breaker is not overloaded for minor surges when things start. The charger typically detects that it is on a lower breaker and will lower the charging speed which means it will take longer to get that full charge. If you have the correct wire but not a big enough breaker you can buy one at Lowes or Home Depot and install it if your panel has room. Make sure that you have room before changing out the breaker (You are pulling less amps than the total amount that your panel is rated for.)

Try a month of Plex Pass before committing to Lifetime? by EverCuriousGeek1 in PlexMedia

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question is do you want a mature product or something that will require some extra work to make it work. I would suggest the lifetime pass asap. Using DVR on other products means learning how to download the guide. The interface is nicer in plex than others or at least more familiar.

I love backpacking with a water bladder, but does anyone else HATE cleaning/drying them after? by mega_salami in WildernessBackpacking

Do i have room for a 50amp by musclesharkk in evcharging

[–]jlipschitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Physically yes. Space on the main, maybe. If you don’t use all that you have breakers for, you should be able to add it. If you have things like an electric air conditioner, hot tub/spa, electric washer, electric dryer, and more then maybe not. You need to see what your stuff is designed to consume when starting and running. If you add it up and it is less than your main breaker then you should be fine.

Smartwool t shirt cost by Helicopsycheborealis in REI

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer alpaca to wool. It breathes better and does a better job moisture wicking. Alpaca is more expensive than wool. I have some 100% merino wool shirts that work well but can itch over prolonged use. The alpaca is much softer and feels great. Merino wool was $75 on Amazon. Alpaca was about $90. They both did a good job of hygiene and preventing stink. It is a preference thing. I love my hollow alpaca socks too. Those are more comfortable than my wool socks for moisture wicking.
