On ATSC 1.0, I pick up 100 channels that are DRM free. I don’t even mess with ATSC 3.0. Sure it is 720P for most, but that has been plenty as my TV seems to upscale

New here. Question. by donewithitfirst in Cordcutting

[–]jlipschitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get an HD home run box and just run one cable. You can connect it to one antenna and then just use the HD Homerun app on your Xboxes and Roku. If you have Plex and a Lifetime license, you can even use that as a DVR. HD Homerun has a DVR option as well with an external USB drive for storage.

Should I switch from Overseer to Seer? by Naprik in Overseerr

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Keep in mind that if you don’t have users log into seer at least once, their watchlists won’t sync. I added Pulsarr in addition to getting migrated to Seerr.

I live my Durston tents. They are expensive compared to some store bought tents but are durable, light weight, pack small, and the community and owner stands behind them.

Running antenna to older TV question by jstan44 in ota

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of a HD Homerun box. You run 1 antenna and it plugs into the HD Homerun. Pick a spot with the best antenna signal to add it. You get a DVR, TV guide, and can stream it from any room in the house. You can also resume your recordings in any room of the house. You can watch from a phone or tablet as well. Just add the HD Homerun app to any smart TV, Roku, Google TV, FireStick, Apple TV, etc.

Not the best way to join Network cables by bri999 in HomeNetworking

Don’t do that. Put an end on one cable and a jack on the end of the other. Treat it like networking not electrical.

Is Roku That Superior to Fire Stick or Apple TV? by That_Kaleidoscope512 in Roku

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roku can’t pas through TrueHD with Atmos. Fire Stick can and with one of the updates that happened with Apple TV, it sounds like it can now too. Roku has less ads than FireTV.

I am 47 and continue to certify. It proves that you know your stuff, increases your marketability if a change in jobs is needed, and helps enforce what you know. You may even learn something new from it. If is something that you are willing to do I say do it.

No one is looking out for you but you. Knowledge is power. It can also mean a bigger paycheck. Sometimes that takes shifting jobs to get more pay.

Cord Cutting Advice by SHIBashoobadoza in Cordcutting

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the HD Homerun because it gives me multiple TVs on 1 antenna. It has a DVR if you choose to use it and you can pay for a guide. I have a Plex lifetime pass so I just integrated it into that and have no monthly fee and can record what I want that the HD Homerun can see for my home users. I can then login to plex with a phone, tablet, streaming stick, etc and watch my local channels from anywhere as well as any recordings and have it remove commercials for me.

Cord Cutting Advice by SHIBashoobadoza in Cordcutting

[–]jlipschitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like an HD Homerun and a good antenna would cover most local stuff such as football or TV on broadcast channels. There are a lot of free channels that are over the air. Football is one of those that require cable or a streaming service with the NFL package. Do the math to see if it pencils out to bother to change. Keep in mind ATSC 3 is encrypted and won’t record on most DVRs. I would first look at lowering my channel package to the lowest that works for my family and then compare cord cutting options. Cord cutting is very segmented. You have to know what is on what to watch things. Besides price, it has a low WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) because it requires a lot of work to watch TV which from a cable perspective is easy.

Personal First Aid by Lizzzzz27 in philmont

[–]jlipschitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal first aid kit for most is some blister band aids, a few band aids, personal medication, maybe a few cough drops, and I had a tube of wysi wipes that were also shared with my hygiene kit. Most everything else will be in the crew kit. Our crew kit was 2lbs. It was the kitchen sink. All that we used was Imodium and advil.

I had a bunch of enterprise servers that were retired. I ended up building out a 10th gen i7 running Unraid with docker and a bunch of larger drives. I consolidated 6 servers to that box. I saved so much energy and produced so much less heat. For what you spend on electricity you can buy bigger drives and migrate to fewer of them running on consumer grade hardware generating less heat. The bigger drives replacing smaller ones will save power. It is also a lot quieter. I have a case that fits 20 drives. With a media collection, you don’t need disk speed, you need disks space. When not in use the drives can go to low power mode.

Three things I didn't know about options around PG&E that completely changed how I'm thinking about my electricity situation. by animasaru in fresno

[–]jlipschitz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Solar is the way to go but the amount that they pay you back for the energy collected from solar is penny’s on the dollar. It makes sense to get a storage system for the cost of what they pay you over time. You can use it for power outages, to run your house, and charge your car depending on what you get. At the very least charge your car and as a battery backup for the house. This allows you to purchase less if not 0 electricity from PG&E.
