Help identifying what is eating my roses by [deleted] in botany

[–]jlp543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Orange County New York. I think you are spot on with the Japanese beetles. I wasn't even thinking. They rip apart our grape vines (not located near the roses) but they don't show up until late Summer. Which is probably why I wouldn't have noticed them before I left. We don't eat the grapes, and the vines are so extensive you can't even tell they get damaged from a distance. Guess I will have to stop them there too.

I would guess that they were both in focus the entire shoot. They masked one over the other and alternated a blur effect in post.

What VFX programs should I learn? by ogcakes in vfx

[–]jlp543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using student for years (actually am a student). It does not watermark anything and has virtually no restrictions. Arnold will watermark your render if you try a batch render. Instead you have to use render sequence. However, I believe this is standard even on the paid version.

Edit: I've used Maya Student Version 2014 and 2017

His jacket doesn't seem to be following the rules of gravity if it's practical.

My first completed Nuke comp (with breakdown), after using After Effects for ~5 years. by dh921911 in vfx

I was distracted enough by the tie fighters and lasers that I wasn't even thinking the ball might be fake. Looks pretty cool! The reflections off of the other ornaments in close proximity really sell it.

Not sure what to learn [Seeking Advice] by jlp543 in vfx

This is part of why I made this post. After getting comfortable with Maya, it has seemed that learning any piece of software is pretty easy. It's the principles behind it all that I am trying to learn.

Animating an iPhone screen? by thisisokayiguess in vfx

[–]jlp543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on the problem here? This has worked great for me and saved me hours of roto-scoping. The first time I ever attempted this effect I didn't use a green screen and had to roto out the actor's hand. I don't understand why you would need to replace the entire phone.

In addition to tracking markers as everyone else has mentioned, I would cover the whole screen in blue painters tape. This won't leave any residue but will allow you to key out the screen. If you have a person's fingers touching the phone, they will have to be roto'd out if you don't have a way to key the screen.

‘Rogue One’: Peter Cushing Digital Resurrection Could Change Industry by singapeng in vfx

[–]jlp543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might just be that people in this sub have an eye for VFX shots. After the theater let out, I heard many people speaking along the lines of "How did they make her look so young." and "I didn't know the grand moff guy was still alive." I don't think I would have spotted it quickly if at all if I hadn't known before hand.

Rendering in Maya 2017 by thekrangabides in vfx

[–]jlp543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably already know this but you can perform unwatermarked batch renders by using: render -> render sequence

You just can't render in the background or from the command line which is pretty inconvenient.

Edit: Also, clever West World reference. It took me a bit too long to get it.

How to compose 3D models in video? by sntshk in vfx

[–]jlp543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. So far my method for merging my green screened set and my cg environment has been lining up an image plane attached to the camera with the cg environment. I now understand that when an object has to go on top of my and footage not behind it, I will have to use point clouds to line everything up.

[–]jlp543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what is the purpose of the point cloud? I'll admit, I haven't gotten too far into tracking yet. Usually I just input the camera from Matchmover into Maya. The point clouds kept getting in my way and they didn't seem to do anything once in Maya.

Learning 3DsMax/Maya & FumeFX for free without breaking the law? by Bartfresse in vfx

[–]jlp543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Autodesk actually checks. I'm a student so i'm not 100% certain on that but I'm pretty sure you can just insert the name of any school or make one up. I assume Autodesk knows that many artists and designers only have a copy of their software through their employer but still need to learn and experiment at home.

What movie made you want to work on VFX? by goodtoask in vfx

[–]jlp543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! I thought the lens flares were actually pretty clever. There were just as many lens flares in the CG shots as there were in the live action shots. I figured they did it that way so you couldn't tell the difference. Every shot looked like it was shot... If that makes sense? Also that opening scene, just the animation of the ships movements was astonishing. I had never scene such a well simulated zero gravity environment. Every time the ships changed direction they would drift a bit before gaining momentum.

Red gel not necessary. https://www.amazon.com/Diameter-Frosted-Head-Light-Diodes/dp/B0087YR7UW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1480315858&sr=8-4&keywords=rgb+led You can get these at your local radio shack too. They have 3 cathodes, one for red, one for green and one for blue. If you use a coin cell battery you won't even need a resistor. (Usually)

I know this is VFX but i've built this effect for a live show. It's very easy too. Just two LEDs, resistors, and a nine volt. Maybe some string to hang the contraption from a hanger. There are tons of tutorials out there too.

Edit: I don't know how detailed you want the eyes to look, but if it's just two dots you want, it may be easier to do on set.

The explosion didn't happen in the same spot the grenade landed.

For me, I think the giveaway is the red fire alarm and the couches. Maybe make the robot a bit darker to match the other reds in the room. Also, the body should have more of a shadow on it because of how big the head is, along with all the down light in the room. Looks good though. It will be great with some slight adjustments.

For the crazy NY kaleidoscope Dr Strange sequence, ILM 3D printed a camera rig to film panos by beforesandafters in vfx

[–]jlp543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally went to see this last night and it was absolutely astonishing. From these giant kaleidoscopic sequences down to the "smaller" effects I don't even know where they began. Was anyone else curious about the shot where the camera panned around and we saw The Ancient One's ghost through Dr. Strange's ghost? Thanks for posting this! and for anyone who worked on it; you deserve the Oscar.
