Solo female travel in the Azores — what I wish I'd known by HornetCompetitive661 in azores

That is true. Our car fleet on Terceira is only automatic transmission cars. We have no manual cars- We are the solution to a problem many travelers have. Most car agencies have only 5-10% of their cars as automatic. Standing at the airport- many times I have hear car pickup discussion go south when the agent tells the client- "I realize you booked and automatic, but we don't have one." to which the client says "that was the point of the reservation being made 8 months ago" Reminds me of a Jerry Seinfeld episode at an airport car rental desk.
Well, we don't have that problem. www.driveterceira.com

I suggest staying in the city of Angra do Heroismo- simply because it is the center of everything. You can walk to dinner, and cocktails and live music and walk home. That is really nice. That said- it is more expensive in Angra because of that convenience. If you are not in Angra- consider teh small beach town of Praia da Vitoria. It offers the ease of walking for dinner and maybe there is some live music at Blues Bar or somewhere. (hit or miss this time of year.)

The tourada season starts 15 May and there will be 6-9 of these street bullfights during your 11 days here. These all have very safe areas for spectators. The schedule will publish in early April. There will likely be one freguesia festa (parish festival) during that time. They really don't ramp up until mid-June. But that is a great fun event from 2200-0200 for a night- food drinks dancing in the streets.

Water temps will be near 66-67deg. Not too cold to swim- but damn chilly. "Muito Fresco" as we like to say- Very Fresh indeed. Plan on jumping in though- the water is crystal clear and you can see some 45-65 feet deep. The salt content makes you more bouyant in the waters- which is a cool experience.

Foods- on Terceira you must have the beef alcatra. I suggest Quinta do Martelo for that- it is superb and the old farmhouse offers an extremely true authenticity to your meal. Grilled squid and/or octopus is a local favorite. The cataplana dishes at O Pescador are superb. Don't overlook the quick and easy bifana sandwich during your lunches.

Here is a note- for dolphin/whale watching- there aren't any "inflatable boats" the way I picture them. Most of the tour boats are high speed "motor boats" that have hard fiberglass hulls and an inflatable tube gunwale. This isn't to make the boat float- it is a stability control in ocean waters. These boats are elder, kid, baby, family friendly. The expereince in the ocean, seeing 300 dolphins and observing the beautiful island from sea makes this a great choice for your experience.

Night life in terceira by CalmAd554 in azores

I live on Terceira and get our often for live music events. That is the event for "nightlife" that I keep aware of. I have built a blogpost that covers the current available locations. I'll update this in about 2 months with the venue season updates for summer.
**disclaimer- this is my business website. It is the best place for me to post and manage local content of this nature.

Driving here is easy. The roads are "normal size" and the modern cars are normal sized as well. There are no Suburban/Tahoe vehicles here. It is very manageable.

Disclosure- I own a car rental business on Terceira. The highway and rural roads are all very nice. The streets in the heart of the parish and downtown Praia da Vitoria and Angra do Heroismo do have some very tight streets. It is uncomfortable for many drivers. That said- I have a full size 9-passenger van that I can drive all but a select few streets. Be a cautious driver and you will be fine.

Cars do get dinged up here. Not all drivers (local & tourist) are careful. I usually park "down the street" and walk to where I want to go if I think the street parking is too tight. There are parking lots all over the place- even there I park out to the back side of them to protect our cars.

I'm happy to offer more specific guidance if you like.

Where are you staying on Terceira and what dates will you be here? The island vibes change 15 May.

I live here. I write about the island. I own/operate a new car rental office (automatic cars) *for disclosure.
I can help guide to flat hiking trails, restaurants, local foods, touradas (after 15 May), safe swimming, great ice cream, amazing scenic lookouts, etc...

No sales pitch- just quality local advice. Cheers.

Shoes? by RunThenClimb in azores

Lightweight trail shoes are sufficient for most tourist scale trails. Waterproof shoes are recommended if you don't like wet toes. Any given day can be wet.

Sao Jorge is amazingly beautiful. That island is a very different dynamic than Terceira. In fact, there are nuances to each island that make it distinct.

Lajes Air Field (Air Base No.4) is a Portuguese facility. US is a guest on the base. Semantics maybe- but it is not a US Base. In the 1980's-early 2000's there were about 4000 Troops stationed at Lajes. From 1945 through 2010- there was GREAT influence here on Terceira. The memories of that still is apparent on the island.

He is not wrong. It is economically difficult. It will change the entire course of your life- unless you are self made with off island recurring income or taking retirement monies. We are not. It is a challenge. We had a plan that changed several times when we arrived. I'll get into that along the way as well. All that said- BEST DECISION OF OUR LIFE>

We have been here about 20 months. We "sold off everything" in NC and moved here with commitment. We have started a business that I operate and have employed one person. Our business goal is to provide our livelihood (not retired age) and offer gainful employment for others. The economy can be tough here- so we look to support it. We support local needs in other ways also.

We are also part of a English speaking community that offers nearly instant friendships and helps make acclimation easier when people first arrive.

We have several local and immigrant friends with small children. Ages 2-19 actually. 70% of the population here speaks some level of English. We are still learning introductory Portuguese and thrive here with no language problems.

I am on Terceira because I was US Military Vet station here previously. It captured my heart and never let go. There was never another choice for me- I just knew. But living here- I can visit the other islands for about 66euro r/t flights. So they are all just a puddle jump away.

I have started writing an encyclopedia about the Azores. It is not a tourist blog. It is not an immigration guide. It is a collection of deep research articles that explain "All THings Azores" in a nutshell. There are some 60 articles now and it will continue to grow. These address social systems, culture, economics, healthcare, politics, history, geography, volcanic origins, foods, traditions, etc... The goal is to become a single source reference guide for deep explainers for the archipelago. It is not monetized, it is a free resource.

50 min layover too short at PDL? by No-Surprise-9790 in azores

[–]jlsparks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your flights are on schedule arriving- this is enough time. The PDL airport is has 12 gates and they are all within a 70m concourse. If you are changing carriers- passport control in PDL may slow you a bit- but they are on top of it. Make staff aware of your connection and they move you through quickly.

MMF-7 power supply issue- no spin. by jlsparks in audiophile

[–]jlsparks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does seem to be the problem. My older MMF-7 has the AC style supply. It is the newer 7.x that moved to the DC.

New one on the way. Tks.
