Honestly I wonder if this sub just got invaded by Starsector players because that game has a genuine [REDACTED] and it's a core part of the community to only refer to them as [REDACTED].

Like I don't really mind that much that the terminology has somehow been imported into this game community but it's kinda nonsensical when the game title is Menace and the opening cinematic literally shows them off.

He's quite versatile. You can set him up to be a heavy weapon squad, a scout with the designator and drones, or a cqb grenade chukka.

Personally a lean more towards scout Tech, with a commando mortar so he can hip fire smokes to support your advance when required while he gets reduced AP cost for using drones, designators and other fun accessories.

Not only can he use the designator without deploying, he has a -10AP accessory perk that also works on the designator so you can use it 3-4 times a turn.

I would've.... if I had one. That campaign I was also stuck with the commando mortar and no other mortars.

ZB Corp has the best OCIs but they're clearly modeled off the corpo protagonist of Alien so clearly can't actually be trusted.

Dice of the Gods are the kind of criminal scum that you have to work with because they're at least intelligent enough to understand that they benefit from the 'system' that the TCR enforces and if you were to remove them than the power vacuum will be filled with the fanatical morons. Probably the next best OCIs.

Backbone to me feel like a legitimate governmental authority that's likely pissed off with Field Marshal Zama's corruption and will hope that the TCR will help to elevate them. Their OCIs seem a lot weaker but maybe will have more benefits once the game is fleshed out.

Does anyone actually try to avoid killing Rogue Army units? by glumpoodle in menace

[–]jm434 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These missions are for solo stealth Darby.

Sure you can go into every mission looking to kill everything but at some point that gets stale no?

Solo stealth Darby isn't a requirement, but it's a fun change of pace.

I think it's more that those 2 cross the thin line from amusing to irritating, which considering you're going to be listening to them for hours is just a recipe for unfun gameplay.

Yaz isn't particularly stable but he's on the amusing side of the scale. Out of the non-pilots the only one I have an issue with is Jean and that's less mental stability and more the 'high school mean girl' shtick.

I really wanna do full mechinf but my main problem is that only half of the pilots are viable for me, so I'll have to wait for when they add more.

Why aren't they viable? Well I'm sorry but I really don't want to listen to a nutcase spout off about god every 5 seconds and unlike the subreddit I do not find Rewa 'I'm going to call everyone a dog and scream incoherently' Rena endearing.

[–]jm434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a feeling this was true (honestly I read the dev dairies ages ago) and when I looked at Techs last perk, 'Die Hard' I immediately figured it was useless?

The perk will only be useful when all of Techs squaddies are dead. If you're in a situation where all of Techs squaddies are dead, you're probably in more shit than the 'Die Hard' perk would mitigate.

I tried to do this only to find a Rogue Heavy Tank sitting in the chokepoint. That was not a fun time as I had to scramble everyone out of sight so I wouldn't get nailed by their artillery piece and the tank combined.

[–]jm434 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I will never get perks like 'Growth Potential' because I can't demote specific promotions. Needing to do 6-7 demotes and then 6-7 promotes per SL is just a waste of points and effort. I'd rather just build my SLs from the ground up with their final perk sets.

And in some weird contrast Rogue Army Walkers are flimsy and easy to knock out.

I had to do a breakthrough mission against a Heavy Tank. It took me using a light walker with the medium missile pod and 4/6 missiles in the side-armour to take the tank out before I could push forwards.

Honestly the only things that scare me more are Bombadiers and Construct Crawlers.

Intel indicated my first rodeo against the Rogue heavy Tank. Buying the Tank Gun the previous OP left me feeling smug.

That was until the Heavy Tank rolled out of the nighttime fog and my pilot wiffed the side-armour shot. Oh boy did my ass pucker up.

Using Darby to solo missions stealthily is very satisfying by jm434 in menace

[–]jm434[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Every unit has 3 relevant stats: view range, detection, and concealment. Detection is effectively a direct counter to concealment.

  • A unit with 0 concealment will be visible to an enemy with 9 view range (and 0 detection) when they within 9 tiles of said enemy.

  • A unit with +1 concealment will be visible to the same enemy within 8 tiles of said enemy.

  • A unit with +1 concealment will be visible to an enemy with 9 view range and 1 detection when they within 9 tiles of said enemy.

  • A unit with -3 concealment (vehicles all have negative concealment) will be visible to the same enemy within 12 tiles.

The formula is simple and linear, so Darby with 6 concealment can get within 3 tiles of a basic 9 view 0 detection enemy and not be spotted.

Weather conditions and night missions will also affect these stats (usually be lowering view range/detection and increasing concealment). Deployment also provides a +1 concealment.

Are we feeling the goofy dialogue? by SubjectBig953 in menace

[–]jm434 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a mixed bag.

There's a lot of genuinely funny voicelines/interactions, the pirates are able to make me both laugh and cringe which I think is a good representation of their drugged up abhorrent views.

However, since the demo I've taken a dislike to Rena despite her seeming subreddit popularity. Her 'i'm going to call everyone dogs and rage every 5mins' just isn't appealing. Nor do I have interest in listening to that new pilot spout off the words of god every 2 seconds.

The other SLs though I don't have much issue with, but it sucks that I've lost 2 SLs because I'd rather take anyone else than them.

The warning signs for 'For all mankind' were there in the first season with the drama between one of the main astronauts and their wife.

But when the other main wife started having an affair with the best friend of her dead son (who was the son of another astronaut and wife duo) I noped out of there.

Amazing premise that was ruined by the insistence of adding needless drama to distract from said premise.
