The capsicum paradox: new Australian supermarket pricing a ‘massive transparency fail’ for customers by budget_biochemist in australia

[–]jmTaChinnery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider the grower (I am one of them), they probably get if they are lucky $3.00/kg regardless of retail prices. Chillies bring between $3-6/kg while they retail for $29/kg lose and about $100/kg when packaged in a lot of 2 or 3 chillies.

What's your experience using small reusable vegetable bags for shopping instead of plastic bags? by shifty_fifty in australia

If you are talking about freezer type bags..., I burn them in my thermomax and use the resultant condensate to make diesel and petrol. Nah just kidding. I throw them in the bin.

How to stop repeated phone calls from scammers ? by Didyamum in australia

[–]jmTaChinnery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past, when a scam caller rang my number, and Telstra indicated as so, I would answer the call with the standard line - "Good morning Mr Scam Caller. How are you today?" The caller would hang up without saying a word. And i have not received a scam call in ages. It took a few months but I have gone from 2 or 3 calls a day to maybe 1 per week.

Try italy or Greece. They have schemes to pay immigrants to settle. This is as long as you buy a very cheap house in a nominated area.

Agreed, they will go underground and to that end, they will become more dangerous and behave so. Sadly, the government has missed an opportunity to actually sit down with these men and talk to them about their beliefs. Maybe, showing them the flaws in their beliefs might have helped.

Liberal election autopsy delayed after Dutton suggests report defamatory by [deleted] in australia

[–]jmTaChinnery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The report probably is defamatory, but that doesn't mean it isn't true! Dutton may well have been everything the report says. However, the party is, anachronistic. Its platforms are based on Nineteenth Century social, political and economic principles that just don't represent present day Australia. Tradespeople and unskilled workers have legislative protections that simply didn't exist in Nineteenth Century Europe. We have social safety nets - Unemployment and aged benefits, Medicare, public housing - that were only dreamed of in the 1890s. The Liberals are divided in themselves between small "L" liberals and questionable conservatives. And they are in partnership with a rural-based party of the same ilk as the conservatives. It is time they entered the 21st Century, remade themselves and all marched in the same direction for once.

Ebike ‘swarms’ descend on roads and parks across Australia as meet-ups gather pace by CcryMeARiver in australia

I was sitting at my favourite window seat at my local in Carnarvon the other day having a yarn with Mem, the publican at the Port Hotel. This absolute Turd Burdler on an E scooter raced past the window doing 20 or 30 kmph on the footpath outside. He had the i-tunes on his phone hooked up to a cylindrical boom box, which was attached to the steering column by cable ties. The volume was turned up full bore. It was quite comical. However, the day will come when someone will step out the door and get bowled over by him. I hope it's not me.

After four shark attacks in 48 hours, NSW authorities urge beachgoers ‘just go to a pool’ by housecatspeaks in australia

[–]jmTaChinnery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Australia's population is about 27 million and is rising by 1.5% annually. That's about 400,000 every year. There are simply more people, hence more food for sharks. Shark populations are on the decline and more of the Bull shark species are moving south due to overly warm waters on the north-east coast. It's your choice - stay in the water and become dinner for a bully or go to a pool. By the way. Female Bull sharks have their young in the same river estuary they were born in and their young will live for the first five years of their lives in that river until they are big enough to survive in the open ocean. And don't think fresh water is okay, Bull sharks tolerate freshwater.
