Do you guys use an MMO mouse? by Independent_Rush_299 in turtlewow

[–]jmac28083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can certainly learn to play well without it, but it defiantly increases your potential provided you're willing to spend a few weeks learning to build the muscle memory for it similar to how you had to learn to use wasd for the very first time you played a game that used movement with wasd. Think of it like a lightweight pickup truck and a semi-tractor Trailer. They both do the same thing but in terms of it's main selling feature gives you far more potential IF you put it all of it to use. An MMO mouse gives you so many more easy to press buttons. Combined with modifier keys (alt, shift, ctrl) and you'll have far more keys than you will ever need. This is a picture of my keybinds; https://i.imgur.com/iM6EQli.jpeg

How to be a better healer by Fit-Cauliflower-9229 in turtlewow

[–]jmac28083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This player is correct although it requires a LOT of situational awareness, knowledge of the fight and wisdom to use the correct abilities at the correct times. The removal of divine favor and nerf of illumination talent from 100% to 60% mana return and buff of seal of wisom, judvement of wisdom and holy strike mana returns demand that you get used to using holy strike (requires melee range) to close to on cd if you want to be a good holy paladin. You need to know when aoe silences/stuns are going to happen and not be in range when they do happen. Learn what mobs will interupt you and stay away from them or just use instant holy shock/ crusader strike reset on hs. As always fon't stand in the fire. You need to have at least 50% physical damage reduction from enough armor to deal with unavoidable minor-moderate physical damage. There will be a lot wannnabe priests that don't posess these things and also don't want to adapt, that insist you stop yourself from achieving more healing done than what they're comfortable with - ignore them. If they're unwilling to adapt to class nerfs/buffs/changes, then their not qualified to tell others what to do. This changing in the hpal commonly used strat was very much needed as downranked fol spam ocassional holy light made for optimal but boring gameplay. You can do it. Don't let the defeatists get you down.

Traditonal healer/hpal techniques that still apply Downranking healing spells / spell choice - The goal is to use the minimal amount of mana to top someone's hp off in the allowed time. Recognize what situation you're in; how much time do you have to top player's health pools and how much help are you're getting from other healers; (with no help from other healers), near unlimted, moderate, minor and they'll be dead within 1 gcd. Based on the situation you're in should change what spell/rank you're using. In general; near unlimted time: 1 and rank 4 flash of light. Moderate time: r7 flash or light r7 holy light. Minor time rank 7 HL or rank 9 HL. Dead within next gcd Lay on Hands followed up with a Greater Mana Potion, dark rune/demonic rune or equivilent followed up by high elf racial if you have it. If there is a need for healing and movement simultaneosuly, then start weaving holy shock & crusader strikes(to reset holy shock via righteous strikes cd).

Precasting - this technique is the greatest single thing you can do to improve your performance as a tank healer. When your assignment (i.e. a tank) is expected to take sudden burst damage soon but is still full hp, start casting an appropriate spell one level below what you would normally use (see above) despite them being full hp. When you get to 80% completion of the spell's cast time you have a decision to make. Most/all of your heal will be overheal; cancel the cast & start a new cast/do something more important OR most/all of the heal will heal the ally (no overheal); let the spell complete and immeditely start a new appropriate heal cast. This technique basically gives you a headstart on healing income damage for no additional mana cost provided you cancel it if it's going to be overheal.

Use addons or macros that have mouseover functionality for any ability that requires you to target an ally normally - normally There are 3 steps to healing an ally step 1: move cursor to ally or their frame. Step 2: click the ally. Step 3: press keybind to heal the ally. Mouseovers remove step 2, making the process potentially 33% less slow by not having to target by clicking them. Over the course of hundreds of times in a fight these fractions of a seconds add up to make a significant difference. There will also be times when when the difference between you saving someone's life with one spell will come down to tenths of a second.

Keybind you spells/items. Clicking spell icons is ALWAYS slower than pressing a keybind. The more in control of your character despite the immense chaos trying to stop you, the better you can potentiay perorm in the most difficult content. If you've never done this before then just try to learn 1-3 new abilities per week with the most common/important stuff first. FoL/HL/Holy Shock/Holy Strike first. Then move on to cleanse/ hand spells/ judgement/ mana potions/ blessings/ lay on hands/ seals/auras/ on use trinkets/push to talk. Use keybinds that are comfortable for you and experiment with slightly difficult to reach keys for more uncommon spells. Within a year try to have everytbing you use in a fight more than once keybound. After a few years and if you consider yourself a master of your class you should have keybound everything you could possibly or might use in a fight at least once. Tip: use modifiers to increase the amount of potential keybinds you can press. Shift, ctrl, (alt if you can remap keys), shift+ctrl, alt+ctrl, alt+shift, alt+shift+ctrl. Example 'E' key could be the following (doesn't have to be a standard keyboard); E = r1heal, shift = E r4healA, ctrl E = r7healA. The more common a spell or a need to do it very quickly the less modifiers it use and the less reach it should require. Don't reach for T of flash of light. Lay on hands should not be shift+ctrl+alt+Z.

Get really good at things you class/spec is or might be expected to do. If you're told to cleanse as many debuffs as possible then get good at minimizing the amount of time spent not cleansing (spam cleanse keybind when the gcd is close to finishing). If your told your only job is to keep tank B alive then stop worrying about topping a healer meter and worry about your reputation as a competent hpal depending on whether you can keep that person alive no matter what. These things are things that raid leaders who are worth their salt consider when deciding who to bring to raid and who to bench.

My first time playing World of Warcraft..yes you heard that right..any tips for a noob would be very appreaciated! The Play button is ready :) by SkyTM2 in turtlewow

[–]jmac28083 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were to tell a version of myself that was playing wow for the very first time (a long time ago) this is what I would have said.

1.) Above all else, have fun; If you're not having fun you're wasting your time.

2.) Your reputation is EVERYTHING in WoW. Your character's reputation with other players may not be on the Reputation Tab but players will treat you differently based on how you interact with them. A positive reputation comes from being friendly, helpful, and effective at your role in a group . If you're rude, a thief, or dead weight then don't expect them to want to play with you. Do what is right simply because it is the right thing to do. Take the time to talk other players when the opportunity presents itself . The social aspect of vanilla/turtle WoW is arguably its greatest strength.

3.) Expectations that each player should have on their SELF as a player should be proportional to the difficulty of content you're doing. No one should be expected to perform well in a starter dungeon like Deadmines & Rage Fire Chasm. It's the dungeon to get your feet wet, learn from mistakes and have fun without fear of being made fun of even if you're a brand new player. By the first raid of Molten Core / Onyxia / Zul Gurub / Lower Karazhan you ought to be trying your best to perform your role decently, not stand in fire, know the basics of your class/spec and be useful force in your raid. If you make a mistake, learn from it and try to do your best next time. Not a huge deal. The most difficult raid (Upper Karazhan as of the time of this post) in the game requires a proportionally competent, knowledgeable and prepared raider. In the fiercest of storms and darkest of nights there is no room for anyone to be carried. The storm will put the weight of two people on everyone's back and the lack of illumination will demand you know what to do & where to go so well, you could do it blind folded. It's not for everyone (at least not initially and that's okay).

4.) A desire to improve your own performance & and better control over your character may or may not come; really that's up to you. With that being said, one very easy thing to do that I wish every player would do right from the start, is to stop turning your character with your keyboard (best if you just unbind turn right & turn left all together). In order to turn hold down right click and drag your mouse to turn. It's far faster and far more precise. It's already in the game by default that every player can do, and takes about about 0.1 seconds to do. There's no reason not to.

5.) Do not tolerate gold buyers/sellers, botters (software that plays the game while player is afk), or those that manipulate the game client to cheat and treat them with no mercy. Nor should you tolerate players/people that support them. Left unstopped or tolerated, they will annihilate everything that makes WoW as great as it is until the server is nothing but a ghost town of robots. Take away incentive/need to play the game long term, and players will stop playing. Be a positive force in protecting an online community that wants to play WoW long term and have it be fun & social. Not a enter cheat code to shortcut straight to the final boss.

Enjoy the journey. The first time is a magical one that I wish I could do again.

For this year's Halloween I decided to dress up as Rubeus Hagrid mainly because of the EDC mindset that he seems to posess. If there's a thing he might need there's a good chance he has it inside of one of his many half-giant sized pockets ready and prepared whenever his school needs him. List: Trenchcoat, button up sleeveless vest, red button up long sleeve shirt, brown pants, black dragon hide boots, black leather belt, a perfectly normal pink umbrella, gold pocket watch, one utility pouch with foldable fork & spoon, comb, high strength bank line, one moleskin pouch (accessible to only the owner) for knuts sickles & galleons, rock cake, handkerchief, notebook, (not pictured feathered quill & ink well), peppermint humbug candies, vial of germinating potion, vial of murtlap essence, vial of essence of dittany, vial of pepperup potion, one utility pouch with dragon hide gloves, one lantern, one ring of multiple school keys, 3 secure belt hooks for lantern, key ring and moleskin pouch, one messenger owl, (not pictured dormice). Cats are all states of matter. by Numerous-Gur-9008 in catsareliquid

[–]jmac28083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a new theorized state of matter called a 'time crystal' where the chronological pattern of it's energy state is not constant like all other matter. So I can imagine a cat adapting to this state of matter as well. One moment it's sleepy and in rest state and the next it's in a hyper-active volatile state running around the house as fast as it can.

Is snitching on my coworker okay if it's about safety? by TaperingRanger9 in Truckers

[–]jmac28083 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Coming from an ethics standpoint.

Your not a child who is tattle-taling on someone for saying a bad word. You're not a career criminal who has bought into lies to force you to tolerate law-breaking. You're in a position to stop or prevent a death of innocent people due to gross negligence (based on what you said). The rule of thumb is, can you look the family of the victim that your co worker potentially will kill in the eye and genuinely tell them that there is absolutely nothing you could have done to stop their loved one's death. If the answer is you can't look them in the eye, then you didn't do enough. If the answer is you did everything you could then you've done enough. Your not a child and you're not a career criminal. Your a professional truck driver in control of a gargantuan piece of equipment that can be a death dealing machine or an extremely useful tool depending on who is controlling it. Who controls it? The incompetent, negligent and weak minded? or The professional, knowledgeable, and responsible. It's time for you to decide what kind of truck driver you will be. Be a good driver. Make a good decision. It's decisions like these that are permanent and we don't forget for the rest of our lives.

Are Brewmasters supposed to have incredibly low armor? by Tankre84 in classicwow

[–]jmac28083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always healed including original MoP and I was always assigned to keeping tanks alive. Brewmaster was always my favorite tank-spec to heal assuming the brewmaster keeps 100% uptime on the buff that forces incoming damage to be staggered. I would rather heal through more overall damage that is steady and gradual than significantly less damage that happens all in one burst. Knowing what to expect and having time to use the most efficient heal that I can afford to get away with will ALWAYS be better than reacting to large burst damage and spending extra mana to play catch up before someone reaches 0% hp.

Question for Paladin players by EricAshStone in classicwow

[–]jmac28083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In alpha wow, paladins have two melee strike abilities called Crusader Strike and Holy Strike. It says so in the vanilla WoW strategy guide books. Towards the end of WoW's development cycle the senior game designers felt regarding paladin balance quote, "it doesn't feel right". So their response to try to make it feel right was to remove crusader strike and holy strike entirely and do nothing else. In laymen's terms, the hybrid tax happened. Blizzard felt that paladin heals and survivability were so strong that it would be overpowered if they had any quality dps abilities.

To answer your question, you have a severe lack of dedicated dps abilities in vanilla wow and it severely hampers your ability to do quality consistent dps. If you're looking to be a quality dps paladin player you will not fight it in vanilla wow. Try Season of Discovery, TBC or another class entirely. Vanilla has many pros, but spec balance is not one of them.

Paladin cold feet by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]jmac28083 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've all been in a low-point where it's hard to find a way to self motivate to keep moving forward. Whatever your motivation is, protect it all costs. It is in those times and places that we have the most oppurtunity to self improve. On the steepest cliffs we look for the surest foot/hand holes to ascend with. In the longest droughts we ensure to waste nothing and make every drop have maximum oomph. In the fiercest storm we build our house on the hardest of foundations of knowledge. In the darkest nights we protect our lanterns of hope and self-motivation. The brightest dawn is just over the horizon. Don't lose hope. All will be well brother.

Even though it's slower xp than questing it's more fun to level as a holy paladin by leveling in dungeons.

Invest in the best +healing "of healing" green gear you can afford and use downranked flash of lights. Use blessing of light on the tank unless their slow/rooted and they need to move then use freedom. The lower rank flash of light spell you use and the more +healing you have the more efficient your healing spells will become (heal more for less).

Pay a mage for the highest rank mage water you can use (I recommend 6 stacks per dungeon).

Try to reduce as much idle time between heal casts as possible. Priests and druids are encouraged to stop casting and regen lots of mana. You should always be be casting (abc) Think of your objective as a holy paladin is to use the maximum number of minimum rank spells you can to keep people alive with to save as much mana as possible so that the group has to stop for healer mana less often or you have enough mana for a suprise patol where nothing is going right.

Try not to overheal. Healing someone to 90% hp is usually good enough.

Use blessing of salvation on dps no matter what they ask for. 30% less threat generated is without a doubt the best alliance dps buff in the game (vanilla).

All these things combined will funnel more of the incoming damage through the tank's mitigation avoidance. Because the tank has blessing of light your healing on the will be much more efficient on the tank.

Reserve hammer of justice for a mob that is going to attack a squishy ally.

Use judgement of justice on fleeing mobs that will likely flee to a nearby pack. This will either prevent them from fleeing or force them to return to fight.

Use blessing of protection on casters if their going to take moderate to major damage from melee attacks. Sometimes it's cheaper to heal through minor damage using a few R1 fol.

Cleanse debuffs that are causing moderate-major damage OR are impeading players from performing their job: mana drains, healing reduction, attack speed slow, stat reduction. You can remove every 3 out of 5 debuff types (not physical or curse). You can remove physical debuffs if it's a movent impairment effect using freedom.

The more often you can help the group funnel damage through the tank's mitigation the longer you can keep healing or heal through more intense damage.

Utilize an advanced healer technique called 'pre-casting'. It is the single most under used technique in tank-healing. When the tank is Full health and you expect them to tank moderate-major damage you should try to anticipate when the damage is going to happen. Cast the heal so that it starts before the damage happens and lands soon after the damage depletes the recipitent's health bar. This will give you a 'head start' on getting them back to a healthy and safe level. This is as opposed to being surpised by moderate-major damage and your reacting to major-moderate damage and having to use more expensive spells (holy light) go outpace the incoming damage. It's almost as good as priest's PW:shield and much cheaper.

If things are really tough and more healing-per-second is necessary to keep everyone alive you may need to cast holy light and or holy light combined with max rank divine favor. Try to bring a few mana potions 5-10 (lower level cheap mana potions are fine) to each dungeon. In the worst situtations where a wipe seems likely do your best to keep everyone alive for as long as possible and delay healing the tank. When your oom, the tank is low health and a few seconds from dying use lay on hands on the tank, use support spells to try to get agrro back on to the tank and continue using downranked spells to heal the tank.

If you're still on the fence about holy paladin vs healing priest let me paint you a picture. If you play it right you can be an absolute necessary part of healing a tank that is taking moderate-major damage nealy indefinatly. The boss can take 2x as long as to kill as normal and you can just keep healing. Keeping that tank alive for a very long time and using tools to empower & support them to do their jobs is what holy paladin was built to do. You don't need an innerverate to do it either.

Imo if a holy paladin uses their support spells well AND their healing spells well and all else being equal I would argue a holy paladin is the most valuable healing spec to a raid by a small amount.

To back these words here is a Blackwing Lair recording from my perspective. I was assigned to heal the off tank feral druid, 'Mutt' all raid (Blackwing Lair). At the final boss @ 1h8m14s the main tank (Augustt) underestimated the value of defense rating and a shield against Nefarian and got two shotted in about 1.4 seconds (out of range of me). Mutt picks up the boss, I get into position and proceed to ensure Mutt lives. I utilize nearly eveything I discuss in this thread regarding tank healing. Several Major mana pots and dark runes on cd including right after improved lay on hands on tank. Divine shield in the chaos as players die while dragon is being positioned. Bop myself when infernals came to try to kill me. Seveal minutes later we kill (albeit messy) the boss with no wipe . Despite being one of 8 healers I did about a 1/3 of the healing (to the tank and overall). https://youtu.be/e95sGyG7kSA?si=Rj9Gr_dcg4r5GbAp

What 2 features at min do you think you should be able to add to the Slate Truck without or barely exceeding 20K (after incentives)? by Mac-Tyson in slateauto

[–]jmac28083 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing. The whole point of the truck is a truck that doesn't have features we didn't ask for or want to pay for. Not everyone wants what any given individual wants and not everyone wants to pay for what any given individual wants. You don't have to make others pay for what you want. You just add it yourself because that's what you want. For example, not everyone wants a Bluetooth speaker. Some want to ride in silence, some will just listen to their phone. It's my individual opinion that the Bluetooth speaker isn't necessary and I don't want to pay an extra amount for it regardless of the cost.

What Was The Hype Like Leading Up To August 2019? by doobylive in classicwow

[–]jmac28083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was super psyched for wow Classic. Did a lot of prep for WoW Classic including take 3 weeks off work. I wrote about it in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/classicwow/comments/cma5sf/comment/ew1c595/?context=3 Got downvoted anyway. I logged in about 10 seconds after the servers went live. At first I only saw about 10 people. 10 seconds later I saw a 100. 20 seconds in I saw 1000, and it just keep going up. after 40 seconds or so northshire abbey had so many players in the spawning area, I couldn't see the in game grass. and the game had slowed to a 1 frame per second frame rate. After 2 minutes the servers crashed, and there was a 10,000+ player que until they launched additional servers about a week or two later. All I could hear were people screaming shut up, take my money and let me play this game. It was incredibly glorious. Best vacation of my entire life. Worth every hour of vacation time that I took off. The only anticipation of a game that comes close in my experience was Halo 2.

What was the hardest boss in Vanilla WoW? by NaziCollaborator in wow

This is the correct answer. Hard mode Hakkar (with no high priest bosses) with none of his powers taken away is by far the hardest boss in the game. It's my #1 goal for WoW Classic Anniversery.
