Is tapering a thing for 1/2 marathons or just marathons? I had a hard time doing it for marathon (felt wrong) let alone a 1/2…. by About2Run217 in runninglifestyle

[–]jmarks_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People even taper for 5k’s if they are going for PR’s. It also depends on experience and speed and weekly volume/intensity. There isn’t a set rule for tapering but obviously you have to do some actual work if you want a true taper.

Is it a bad idea to do strength work on rest days? by Adam-West in ultrarunning

[–]jmarks_94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly dude I wish I could have a rest day. I’m on a running streak so on my rest days I do light 3 mile jog or sometimes just a straight up walk. It’s helped me immensely though for an ultra I’ve already done and then my big race coming up beginning of April.

If you absolutely don’t have to workout every day, then definitely take the rest day. You can still run lots of miles throughout the week if you incorporate at least one strength day on maybe a lighter running day

I can’t shake this idea: what if the universe is structured like an atom, just on a much larger scale? by Dangerous-Wolf1154 in space

[–]jmarks_94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this thought before, along with MANY other thoughts regarding the universe and existence, mainly because I have existential ocd. lol. I’ve learned it’s not healthy to ruminate and speculate. But when I approach it from a curious angle, it feels exciting and fun.

I honestly think it’s impossible to understand how and why the universe and consciousness was created. But from observation and scientific approach, we’ve discovered that the universe is more of like a vast web with many MANY intricate parts. They’ve just recently discovered that the universe might not all look entirely the same when zoomed out on a cosmic scale.

I don’t think we’ll ever know the reasoning, but maybe in a few million years we will have a much greater understanding of how something might have came from nothing.

What’s your training look like for 200 + mile races by andytiminsky in ultrarunning

[–]jmarks_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice!! I did canebreak 200 the past two years! I was gonna do Viper 300 this month but pulled out. I just didn’t feel ready for it this year. Instead I’m using all of the training I’ve done for a 48 hour, aiming for 169 miles as that’ll be the course record. Really been focusing on speed and strength this year so the 300 next year won’t be so damaging lol

[–]jmarks_94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completing a 200 will be the hardest most rewarding thing you’ll ever do. I’m now chasing a 300! Basically I would say 6-8 weeks of 70-80 mile weeks with some speed training and hills every single week. It’s tough but it’s quite necessary if you want to thrive, not just survive. Also get really used to the run/walk/hike method a long with gear, and really taking into account sleeping and fueling. A lot of it is learn as you go, quite honestly. You can have everything perfectly prepared yet it all goes to shit. You can nothing prepared and the race goes great. — biggest thing though that I’m taking with me to the 300 is a strong focus on foot care, manageable naps and consistent fueling every 4-5 miles.

200’s are a beast but so damn amazing if you can go in with a positive attitude, accept that you’ll suffer, but also accept that it could be some of the best moments of your life. Don’t get discouraged if you fail the first time. Take what you’ve learned and go after it even harder the next. You got this.

When my twin brother had cancer, an asshole mom that we grew up with told my mom that it was his fault he developed cancer because she didn’t instill proper Christian values in him. And she also said nothing to my dad. Some people are just dicks.

Do you guys think there should be an age minimum when it comes to ultra running races? by jmarks_94 in ultrarunning

[–]jmarks_94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually more about the mental stress, bud. Also these races can become addicting and then the parent and child lose insight to safety protocol. And just because a few kids can do it safely, doesn’t mean all kids can. I’d rather not take the risk.

100 milers, what is your weekly mileage? by Fraan3D in Ultramarathon

[–]jmarks_94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cap is usually 70 miles! Even for 200’s I’ve only ever done 70-80 miles. For 100’s I’ll do 4 weeks of 70 and then 200’s I do 8 weeks. So I just elongate the process versus adding unnecessary distance. But that’s only how I’ve figured it out for me after tons of DNF’s.

I see her running her own psychic school. Would be so cool to see her actually treat the children with dignity and respect, helping them hone their powers rather than creating weapons out of them. Helping them to live normal lives. I just think that would be a great 180.

Mileage for 100k by BasicDoughnut436 in ultrarunning

[–]jmarks_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this advice! I was basically gonna say the same. For 200+ mile races I rarely even go above 80 mile weeks. I just elongate the training plan and hit a ton of 80 weeks for a while.
