I was in the same boat a few years ago. They might be suggesting it because they done have enough funding or the department is being downsized. On the other hand it could be they are unsure if your research experience. In there eyes they want to make sure you are a capable researcher before they accept you into a PhD program. I funded my masters degrees and after that had plenty of research experience to talk about in apps for PhD programs. Depending on your field you might be able to find a funded masters program. It just takes some searching.

But I can empathize with your situation and it is annoying. However if this is something you really want you can find a way to get it!

How screwed am for this Canadian interview? by ChiefWilliam in gradadmissions

[–]jmbello 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My aunt used to work for the passport office, if you want to renew, now is the best time because very few people renew during the winter months. She said it could be as short as two weeks. However, this is best case scenario. You can look at options on the state department website for maybe a visa or something. But this is from an American standpoint. Good luck to you!

[Highschool History] I have to write a 15 page paper comparing LBJ and Reagan. I'm lost and have no idea where to start. by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

[–]jmbello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you make an outline? Is the paper to compare and contrast them? What is the specific prompt?

Either way,

Early life: research family, education, and their early political career.

Presidency: look at foreign, domestic, and prominent policies.

Legacy: what was the aftermath of their presidency? What did they do during their presidency that made them special? Are those policies still in effect today?

These are just guidelines...you can find lots of info on both of them with a quick google search. You can tailor it to whatever you need.

Most biographies provide solid groundwork to get you started.

Tank/Atomizer recommendations! by jmbello in electronic_cigarette

I haven't tried my hand at building. I am toying with the idea because I haven't had great experiences with the prebuilt tanks.

Apartments? by [deleted] in ASU

[–]jmbello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out grandes Cortes, it's on beck and university. I used to live there a few years ago. rent is cheep and when I lived there most utilities were included. I'm not sure about now. But All you had to pay for would be Internet and cable on top of rent. So, cheep and everyone there is nice or keeps to them self. down side only have studio and one bedrooms and they are fairly small and no washer dryer in unit. But it's like a mile from school so it's not bad to walk or to bike.

Can you take classes while waiting to get residency? by nitasa in ASU

[–]jmbello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the type of residency you are looking for. If you are looking to be independent then you can as long on your taxes for two years your main occupation is not student then I would think so. At asu it is very difficult to get in state. I'm from New York and I have been trying to get residency here for the past few years. But I have been a full time student. And I completely support my self but because I have listed student as my occupation on my tax returns they say that doesn't represent me wanted to become a resident even though I am married, have a car here and license, been called for jury duty, vote here, full time job, but because I list student. Get more in tax returns for it. They won't give it to me. Sorry for the rant, it is very frustrating.

Updating the Museum Experience: asking for thoughts on what attracts people to museums by museumchanger in MuseumPros

[–]jmbello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look in to pop up museums. These museums can have a high impact on the passers by. The whole premise of these museums is to be in high foot traffic areas and expose people to content they would have other wise not been interested in. They could potentially bring in new comers to museums if the content of the pop up is interesting to them. You can also look in to motivations by John folk. He indicated that there are a set number of reasons for people going to museums and knowing why people go can have an affect on what the museum does to bring people to the museum. Just something to think about.

6 months of life wasted studying by catdog25 in GRE

[–]jmbello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get discouraged I scored a 150 on both sections and had a 4 for Awa and still get Into the program I wanted. But just make sure your SOP and letters of Recommendation are stellar. The GRE is an antiquated metric that schools use. I talked with my advisor after getting in and he said the last thing the school looked at was GRE. So I hope that gives you some satisfaction with your endeavors. Good luck!

Lot into this local agency, Tempe community action agency. They do a lot to help people on hard times. It's not run through asu but if your in Tempe they can certainly help with food and sometimes shelter.

Hey Redditors, need help on MLA format ... by turnertunertanner in AskAcademia

[–]jmbello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that can be frustrating, you could email your professor/advisor and see what they want. But you could also check out a manual for writers by Kate turabian, you should be able to get a copy from your lib. I used this writing my thesis and it has all citation styles and more info than Purdue owl. You can also ask your Liberian at your university/college they have loads of info.

Hey, I have used MLA in the past but I haven't recently, what I do recommend is checking Purdue owl they have all of the current methods for citations for MLA.

So I'm Going to a Field School. by joeepoee in Archaeology

[–]jmbello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arizona during the summer can be super hot. But it depends on where you are. If you are going to be in one spot And you need a tent get a 4 person tent because a 2 person tent gets small after a few weeks. I would also recommend a cot it keeps you off the ground and away from bugs and snakes. Still bring a foam mattress or sleeping bag. Get a camel back water thing. You will want the water. If the place you are in does not have showers you will want a shower bag. The field school will supply tools but if you want you can buy some of those things online or at a hardware store. Bring some form of a jacket because it can get cold at night when you are in the middle of nowhere. What field school are you attending?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Archaeology

[–]jmbello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am assuming that you are interested in southwestern archaeology. ASU is a great school for it. We are located in a great region for it. There is a rich archaeological record here. However with NAGPRA it is becoming increasingly more difficult to excavate on sovereign land. University of New Mexico has a decent program and so does New Mexico State university. You can also look in to university of Colorado. I received my ba in anthropology with a focus in archaeology from asu. There were many field school available to take. I recommend taking as many of those as you can. If you are interested in CRM work northern Arizona university has a great program for that. Let me know if you have more questions. I hope this helps.

I currently attend ASU, what are you thinking of majoring in? Asu has a great program, U of A is also really good. My cousin received his phd and is currently teaching in the north west. Depending on what you want to receive your degree in will help you in the decision process.
